Cons: Pricing point

Pros: Speed, 4 TB of storage
Comment:
Just bought the drive this morning. I missed the savings on line, but the Sales guy gave me a discount at $269.99. I didn't want to pay this kind of cash - but, will soften the blow when I sell the 3TB that it just replaced. As I am using this as an external drive - we could not find any 3.5" hd enclosures that said it would work with 4TB - I'm assuming because this product is so new. I took a chance and bought the "Mediasonic Smart Drive usb3" which was on sale at NCIX for $34.99. It turned out to be a great gamble as these pieces were meant to be together - it starts up very quickly and so far, the files are transferring at a steady pace. I will be using this for both Mac & PC and after reading the blogs - I followed the advice and used the PC for the formatting to exFat. It recognized around 3.65TB on PC and the full 4TB on MBP.

Cons: Reliability, price

Pros: Capacity, read/write speed
Comment:
Purchased 2 of these (1 from NCIX, 1 from another store).Drive from NCIX was DOA (loud whistling), and the second starting giving read errors shortly after install. Not impressed with the quality of these drives, and I won't be buying any more.NCIX's RMA process is fine, but Hitachi's leaves a lot to be desired. Out of stock on the replacement, and I had to phone several times to get the advanced RMA arranged. Replacement still has not shipped.

Cons: Still a little pricy.

Pros: Huge, Huge, Huge Capacity. Quiet, Did I mention Huge Capacity?
Comment:
I've had 2 of these for a few weeks now and have not had any issues that were the fault of the drives. The price tag is still a bit high even on sale for $250 a piece, but I went with these to avoid haveing to replace smaller drives later, and to conserve physical space in my server. Like everyone else is saying, make sure to format it to GPT instead of MBR to get your maximum capacity. If you happen to be running WHS 2003 like me, be aware that if you want to add any drive over 2tb to your storage pool it will reformat the drives as 2tb MBR drives, leaveing half the drive inaccessable. This is a limitation of some OS's and not a fault of the drive.I've read there is a way to fool WHS into accepting them as GPT but the process is a bit beyond my abilities. If anyone finds an easy way to make this happen, let me know.

Cons: Price (even at $250 on sale) was a little higher than other drives

Pros: Runs very coolNo raw read errorsNo bad sectors
Comment:
I picked up two Hitachi 5K4000's during the last sale and they run very cool and encountered no issues during low-level format. They aren't the speediest of the drives but I'm more interested in longevity and temperatures than speed. They were purchased to replace the (4) WD20EADS [first gen] 2TB drives in my media computer as three of four have been RMA'd in about 18 months time. I also run (2) Samsung HD204UI's, (1) Seagate LP and (1) WD20EARS and although the Samsung's run the coolest, I've noticed some raw error reads about 15 months into ownership. They come with a three year warranty which is great considering since Seagate bought Samsung, that vendor has put a one-year warranty on all their drives. Even Western Digital drives now come with, at best, a two-year warranty.I plan to pick up a couple more of the Hitachi 5K4000's when they're on sale again as they seem VERY reliable, run cool, quiet and have no issues out of the box. I'll likely replace all of my drives with these as they seem to be the best drive currently available.

Cons: -Not the best price per gigabyte

Pros: -Best single drive capacity so far-"Green" drive means less power-Perfect for NAS use if supported-3 years warranty
Comment:
If you need that much capacity, this is the drive to get even if the price is not that great at 250$ on sale. Currently Hitachi is the only brand with an internal 4tb drive. I took a bit of a gamble by buying 2 of those 4tb drive to put in RAID1 and I'm happy to report that they seems to be detected correctly in my Patriot Javelin. My last 6 hard drives were Hitachis and they've all been running strong without issues and the 3y warranty is always good compared to other brands which have reduced theirs to 1y only...

Cons: Price per GB a little higher than current 2TB offerings, can't test with existing tools.

Pros: Big, cool, quiet, fast
Comment:
Really impressive, was going to buy 2 2TBs (quite a bit cheaper option) but am glad I did not - I forgot how much platter density affects hard drive speed. Even though this is a 5400RPM drive it runs circles around my existing 1TB 7200RPM and 1.5TB 5900RPM drives. Copying files either direction the other drives' disk queues sit up around 2.5 and the Hitachi barely even breaks a sweat at 0.5 - 1.0.Quiet, although a little noisy at seek (it's no WD black though), and runs nice and cool in spite of having 4 platters, idles at 36°C in the bottom bay of my P180 as opposed to 37 for my previous 3-platter Seagate 1.5TB greens. One minor con affecting any drive this large is the existing drive testing tools only work on 2TB or smaller drives.
