This product didn't even work for a whole month. Tried upgrading the firmware and still no luck getting it to work. Rarely boots up, when it does it can't access the brand new drives. Company provides no support, won't return calls or email. Warranty is no up and I'm stuck with a unit that has been worthless since day one. Do not waste your money on this junk and a company that won't resolve any problems.

The GMG 3500MGB Raid enclosure required a firmware upgrade just to get it working after the initial purchase. It worked fine for a few months then its performance began to deteriorate. The NAS would go off line and require a reboot to restore. During the last month it began to lock up more often. Today, just a few days out of manufacturer's warranty, it failed completely. Although I can still access the RAID's utility software via the network, the unit reports there are no drives installed. RAID is designed to allow one drive to fail, while the other one continues in operation, and also allows the bad drive to be replaced and restored. The likelihood of both drives failing at once is very remote. It is much more likely the GMG controller failed.

This is a great solution for a small workgroup of 5-10 users that have less than a gig of data per user that is critical to be mirrored. Only issue i see is that the power supply overheated to replace one from Lacie Model ACU034A-0512 AC adapter or get the extended warranty. Based on embedded linux distro busybox, backup config in case of power outages it may clear all your mappings all the data is there just have to configure the mappings again or load your backup config

This product has a mind of its own and doesn't work worth a damn. It has been nothing but trouble from the get-go. It did not work reliably with the original firmware and it does not work reliably after upgrading to the latest firmware. It resets its workgroup at random times on a regular basis. The onboard disk utility is a joke and will not correct a disk error. My considered opinion is that this is a hunk of junk. Stay away. Have bought New External Enclosers and they work just fine now.

Like smeagol, I have power supply hissing issues, inhibiting use of the unit. Now I'm looking for a NAS replacement, since paying shipping on the power supply back and forth is a substantial cost, and not a guarantee that it will work again. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND

I've had this unit for just over a year now and the power brick is hissing at me. I've read the problems others were having with the power brick and ordered a new one. Unit works with new brick but I find it has a hard time to boot up. I need to turn it off/on a few times to get it to boot. Reboot button is not working and I never could get the print server to work. Now I'm afraid to loose my 1T of data so I'll have to backup my backup. Will not buy this unit again.

I have had one of these 3500MGB-Raid Pro boxes for a while and have had the same problem others detail in reviews. However I noticed Galaxy had a firmware update (Released April 2009) - so I thought I would give it a try. After a straight forward update following the directions on the site, and resetting up the unit (you will loose all users / settings) the NAS is actually working! and has been for over a week without any issues. I am using this as an FTP server and laptop backup storage and so far, so good!

Bought this and 2x1TB Seagate drives about 8 or 9 months ago. Worked like a charm then I started hearing a faint hissing from the power brick, but it didn't seem to affect it. But about 3 weeks ago, I came home to a clunking hard drive sound. Powered the unit off, but it would not come up again. Sometimes drives would spin, sometimes not, but the OS would never come up. On a whim, found a similar LaCie power supply on ebay (ACML-51 made by Sunfone like the GMG's) with the same pinout and voltages. It worked. The unit came up with both drives, but needed to be remirrored. I flashed with latest firmware and it seems to be working fine again. So this seems to have defective power bricks. If you hear it hissing, replace the power brick asap.

Easy installation of drives (I like that it is diskless so you can choose your own config). Easy to set-up via web interface. Easy to use with Macs and Windows. Check the box for Bonjour and iTunes and the NAS popped right up in Mac OS X. As for Windows, supports UPnP, but as is normal w/ Vista & XP, seeing the NAS or waiting for it to show up takes multiple attempts, but it works. Has a BitTorrent client that works, but read cons for problems. Has a USB port that supports a USB printer and functions as a print server.

Easy to set up, install drives and initialize over the network. Great value for the price. Raid configuration/drive format was simple. Network printer share was easy and a nice value add since it eliminated the need for a network printer or network USB hub. The basic setup was so easy you won't need the very high level. This is my first day with the device so I'm only evaluating the set up. I purchased this device with two (2) WD 1TB "Black" drives to provide mirrored NAS. I recently lost all backup data stored on a one-year old 500MB USB drive. While researching that drive failure I noticed what seems like high failure rates across all manufacturers on the big USB drives. I am looking for greater reliability... We'll see if this solution is any better.

I have two of the MGB Raid Pro Enclosures and both have failed. I am not sure why, but I can tell you what I have learned about the experience: -If you are buying this drive enclosure because it is cheap and looks cool, then save your money and buy a better enclosure like a Drobo. It is not worth loosing your data. I had set up my drives as a RAID 1 Mirror for the redundancy, but this is worthless when the enclosure fails. -You can not just remove the drives (this is the same for all RAID drive manufacturers) and put them in another enclosure. The RAID does not work like that. They are usually proprietary. You will need to rebuild it using software ($400+) or a company. -Remember, backup your setup file (so you can at least transfer the drives to another matching enclosure). -Backup your data to a non-RAID drive, so that you can access it, if the main drive fails. I tried to contact Galaxy a two separate occasions (they said to use email because it is faster and they respond in 24

This product does not work. It has been nothing but trouble from the get-go. It did not work reliably with the original firmware and it does not work reliably after upgrading to the latest firmware. It resets its IP address to some random value that is not in my netmask, on a regular basis. The RAID arrray says one one the drives needs replacement after about 2 months in service (I don't believe what it's telling me.) The exact message is ''The disk occur wrong. Please power off and exchange disk.''. Another panel tells me both drives PASSED the health test. My considered opinion is that this is a hunk of junk. Stay away.

We've also been battling with this box since we got it up and ''running.'' It disappears off our network and freezes up all the time. Any help, tigerdirect?

This is not a NAS server. Clearly and loudly. It loses connection with: Mac OS 10.5.current, Windows Vista, & Windows 2000, almost every hour. It is the slowest thing I have used in like a decade. Also it only formats in EXT... what do we live in ''stone age''? Good luck trying to get data off it unless you have the product or maybe Linux. Tech support is good, well if you want to know that the product DOES NOT WORK. Don't try to get a refund from TigerDirect or GMG (especially GMG, ''They don't do credits''), because most of these problems are noticeable (well once you start getting frustrated) after the 30-day return policy.

I have had a weeks worth of headaches from this product. I t just doesn't work as advertised. The shares won't stay attached and I can't put a sparsebundle on it to back up to to save my life. It coming back and I'll get something else. Don't waist your time. Their tech support seems to be non exsistant. It does see mto be well made i must say.

If you are looking to use this device as an external iTunes server don't waste your time or money. The iTunes server feature shows up as a shared library and does not support playlists or other iTunes features. It claims to support NFS (to correct permissions issues with smb) but I had no luck in setting this up and the technical support from GMG was non-existent. Also, the first one I had was not allowing me to upgrade the firmware so I exchanged it for a new one. Once the firmware was updated it still would freeze when I tried to set it up with iTunes and LightRoom. If what you want is to attach this to your network and use it as a backup device it would work fine. Via smb I was able to copy files sucessully but slowly on to it. I'm only running 100 BaseT so speed would be better with a gigabit router but it was very slow. I returned the unit and will be purchasing a USB 2 Raid enclosure instead.

Great value for the money. Works just as advertised. Right after purchase I updated it to the newest firmware version and the process was quite easy. I then started moving GBs of files onto the hard disk RAID array. The user and group management features are all good, the web interface is quite simple and straightforward. I didn't test the BitTorrent client or the built in print server but I'm sure they all work well. Only problem I had with it was that it seems to get confused/become inaccessible after a huge file transfer has occurred from multiple computers simultaneously, but a quick restart solves the problem. Overall I'd recommended it.

I read the other reviews before purchasing but have not had the same experience. Running the latest firware (2.6.3-20080530) I am having the following issues: 1) Can't reconnect to shares or web admin of unit if it sits for a day or so w/o being used. 2) Won't power down w/o unplugging it when #1 above is experienced. 3) Router gets hosed and needs to be rebooted when #1 above is experienced. 4) Can't pull files back off of it. At this point I have potentially lost a great deal of data and backups as I excitedly had moved a lot to this unit to free up hard drive space locally (I should know better, right?). Some background on me- I am an IT guy who has built his last 3 machines ground up, with a complete wireless network (printer, desktop, laptops) and VOIP on my home network for years, so I am not new to networking or hardware.

I really like this little unit. I'm using it with 2 x 1TB Seagate drives in RAID1 config and it's running just fine. Like similar units, it runs a Linux kernel and drives are formatted with EXT2 or EXT3 (supports encryption). The interface is easy to use and I got my shares configured quickly and can see them instantly in Windows and Mac OSX. I also upgraded the firmware (takes a while but no issues.) Nice thing is the drives and fan power down when idle and power up quickly when accessed, saving the drives, fan, and energy when not in use. The compact all metal construction gives it a solid feel. Gigabit ethernet is also a plus for a unit in this price range. It also has built-in Torrent client so you can download even if your computer is off, but I have not tried it yet. Inexpensive and gets the job done.

This item, as advertised, is a great little piece of kit. It is extremely well constructed and quite easy to set up if you are willing to sit down with the instruction manual for 5 minutes. I had no problems setting it up as a home network and FTP server. Both my Windows comps as well as two linux boxes picked up the NAS unit immediately. Web interface is basic, but gets the job done.
