Cons: button assignement / placement, always tempted to use the big dial for volume (as on most other audio equipment)

Pros: Amazing soundopen management interface
Comment:
Excellent box with exceptional software. Plays even ripped wav files (somehow "raw audio") from my CD archive. The "open" software support which includes Linux / MySql / perl is nice for the geek, but on the other hand easy to use without customization.More than I thought a "commercial" product could offer, including additional "free" WEB based Squeezeboxes for your home computer(s).

Cons: Software can be tricky for some people

Pros: Excellent sound qualityExtensive open-source software with innumerable featuresSoftware under rapid developmentDSP and decoding abilities can be changed via firmware updates
Comment:
This was developed by the former Slim Devices, the originator of network audio players. This is probably the best player they ever made. The platform they've based this on is now very stable and their audio design approach was designed for maximum performance from the start:- bi-amplification using Class D amps- DSP controlled to work around the known characteristics of the speaker drivers usedThe result is a surprising amount of bass and clarity up to very high volume levels without distortion.Probably the best thing about the system is the software. It's open source, free and under intense development. The unit's capabilities can be changed dramatically as the software changes and *everything* can be changed. In fact if you know enough perl you can change it yourself...It'll play almost any audio file format and run on almost any platform - Windows, Mac, Linux. It also plays many Internet radio stations. It makes a great alarm - there are multiple daily alarms, they can vary by day and there is a fallback - if the device loses network contact, the clock will be kept active by an RTC and the firmware can generate an alarm tone all on its own.Oh and there's a line in and a line out - the line out can be used for a subwoofer (the DSP will handle the crossover) or headphones.Their Squeezebox is great, but Boom brings it up a notch...
