Amazing router
Cons: The stock firmware, while strong in it's actual coding and function, is very weak on interface. It was clearly coded by people whose command of the English language was sub par at best. And installing DD-wrt or another firmware is the most obvious solution, but this can only be done by someone who has at least relatively high skills with computers and networking, and is comfortable flashing his router to a new firmware. I did mine perfectly on the first try, but it took me a week to work up the courage to do it, because if you mess up you can render the router useless and so turn your 120.00 piece of equipment into an expensive paperweight.
Pros: This router is spectacular in a few different ways. The firmware it comes with is not the best, but the strength of this router is that it can be upgraded using open source firmware. I put a new version of dd-wrt on it and it is absolutely incredible, AMAZING for gaming, the QoS and other bandwidth management functions make it terrific for a gamer, especially when others in the household like to stream video. |

works great w/ DDWRT
Cons: - easy to brick if it's writing to NVRAM (bad design job by Asus)
Pros: - lots of memory for a ddwrt router- one of the few that have USB 2.0 ports- USB 2.0 ports support storage and printer Comment:
I didn't run the original Asus firmware long because I knew it was going to be used w/ DDWRT. DDWRT installation was a bit convoluted but I got it working eventually (had to restore to defaults after installing 2.4SP2 before wifi would work). It's been fairly solid since even after being powered off abruptly.Seems to be faster than my Linksys 45WRT router that is also running DDWRT. |

Mod It
Cons: Stock firmware is garbage.Only 100mbit switch, but wireless supports 270mbit. Go figure.
Pros: DD-WRT CompatibleFast Once you mod it.Snappy.Good Coverage. On sale! Comment:
I bought this to mod it with DD-WRT. If you plan on doing the same please make sure you read a lot of instructions before you decide to do it. This router is easy to brick if you aren't careful so just keep that in mind. |

Might be good if you dont have mixed setup
Cons: Its getting choppy, cuts the connection frequently, the range is 30% worse than my old G router.
Pros: Looks good, good price. Comment:
I guess it might work BETTER with a network that is either G or B or N. but mine is not. I tried to use this for my media center and the whole house, could not have a continuous streaming for more than 3 minutes max. My old G router worked much better. I am returning this. |

Wow
Cons: Would prefer the USB be more printer friendly. The USB transfer speeds are mediocre at best.
Pros: USB port works with external hard drives. Never needs reset. Is very secure and has good range. Is screaming fast. Comment:

Honest mistake or NO?
Cons: Was never able to get wireless N to work, and every firmware upgrade failed. Today I connected a USB hard drive, and the network share of the router showed up as "part0 on WL500g.Premium". I know WL500W and WL500gP are identical on the outside. The box says what I have is WL500W. Is this an honest mistake, or something else??? I am seeking a response from both newegg and the vendor.
Pros: Wireless G works. Comment:

ASUS WL-500W MULTI-FUNCTION Wireless Router 802.11B/G Draft N Bit Torrent FTP Print Server USB
Cons: None
Pros: Has yet to lose its connection with cable modem. My USRobotics had to be rebooted at least twice per week. Love the printer server function as we print from 3 laptops 2 and 3 floors away. Comment:

Fantastic Router!!!
Cons: No gigabit LAN.
Pros: Great performace. Better range then any other wireless router i've used. Works with DD-WRT (including Draft-N support), and was easy to setup. Comment:
Asus's firmware doesnt really do justice to this thing (no offense asus). Its good for most users, but with DD-WRT this router can do ANYTHING. I upgraded to the 500W from a 500G, which is mostly the same but without Draft-N. Even using G only wireless connections the 500W has a noticable speed and range increase. |

ASUS WL-500W MULTI-FUNCTION Wireless Router 802.11B/G Draft N Bit Torrent FTP Print Server USB
Cons: No gigabit ethernet. Not dual-band.
Pros: Works great with 3rd party firmware, and the manufacturer even promotes that fact on their web site. Slick looking design. Almost unlimited possibilities of what you can do with this box. Comment:
Rebate process is fairly hassle-free, and if you're willing to pony up a few dollars of your rebate then they will expedite the request. |

Dead... not for the long term...
Cons: For a product designed to be on 24/7, I would expect to have a longer life than 20 months as I have never had a router die this quickly. Router began losing connection badly last month preventing any work on the net. The set up to use the USB ports is far from a beginner task... it sounds good on paper, but setting them up is too much of a pain.
Pros: The router worked really well.... while it was alive. I don't regret buying it... but (see cons) Comment:
Not a bad design... I just don't like electronics DIEING on me... I like to upgrade because something new "woos" me :-) Manufacturer Response:Dear Valued Customer,We are sorry for this inconvenience. Eggcellent Router
Cons: It Can't Make Coffee
Pros: The router work as expected, I've had no problems whatsoever with 3 months of use so far. Comment:
I have 4 computers connected to this router (2 wired & 2 wireless), I upgraded from a wireless G router when i added a wireless N capable desktop to my network, Three months later and all computers (G & N wireless & wired) are connecting and running smoothly. |

Not survive after warranty
Cons: It dead in short time right after the warranty expired and repair cost more than buy a new one. The quality control is pretty bad. I had a D-Link router before and it worked more than 5 years.
Pros: Works well when it alive. Print server function is very convenient. Comment:
The ASUS website in TAIWAN shows the wireless product have 3 years warranty, but I called US customer service, they said the US market has only 1 year warranty. It's pretty unfair! They are the same product. |

Power Adapter DIA
Cons: Hangs occasionaly.
Pros: It works Comment:
Bought it one year and two month ago. Power adapter died yesterday. Two month after end of warranty. Give those Taiwanees engineers credit, they know how to build device to break EXACTLY when they want. |

Works, eventually.
Cons: Very poor documentation.Interface has some translation errors into English. You can tell what it means, it just reads poorly.
Pros: Good range, strong signal.USB sharing feature is very useful.Big improvement over my G router. Comment:
This is my second Asus product (G51 notebook purchased last week), and I would have to say that while they seem to make some solid products, their documentation is very poor. Manuals and user guides seem to be an afterthought. |

Nothing Impressive about this router
Cons: Set up print server functionality EXACTLY as the instructions stated and I ended up with NO wireless connection to any of my 4 computers. Had to uninstall the printer drivers to reestablish wireless connection. Router does not recognize my FAT32 formatted external so the FTP function is useless. So the only functions I can use are NO different than any other wireless N router. I get intermittent connection losses but am unsure if at this point it is the router or DSL modem
Pros: 2 USB ports. Its a Wireless N. dd-wrt compatible Comment:
I will see if anything changes after I perform dd-wrt upgrade. If I "BRICK IT" it truely will not be a loss from what I can tell so far. The manual is terrible and even with an engineering degree is pretty hard to follow (They assume the readers are IT people). Contacted Tech Support over a week ago, they took my number and I have yet to hear back from them. |

Poor Choice - Garbage Instructions
Cons: The instructions are garbage, and I mean TOTAL garbage, and googling up third party instructions proved useless. Apparently NOBODY can get this thing to stream a webcam over the internet. Not ONE reviewer here claims to have done that. Big deal, I can download files with my computer off, ooooo!!!YOU SHOULDN'T NEED TO BE AN EXPERT TO SET THIS UP. I've built about 100 computers in my lifetime, and I've set up 3 or 4 other routers, I'm a Professional registered Electrical Engineer (ie., I'm no dummy), and I understand the basics of router programming, but Asus will NEVER again get my business since they apparently now assume their customers are all knowing IT experts. For those who are happy with this router, from what I read you aren't using all the features. When you test and are able to get ALL the features to work WITHOUT resorting to replacing the firmware, THEN give it a 5 star rating. If you haven't tested it and got it to work, don't parrot the description by NewEgg.
Pros: Reliable router, fast transfers, USB port for hard drive sharing (works), printer sharing (didn't try) and supposedly webcam streaming. The webcam steaming hasn't worked for me. Nice looking box with orange lights. Didn't come DOA. Hasn't needed reboot, hasn't dropped connections, seems reliable as far as the features that actually work, but some don't or won't because either not enough information is provided in the pathetic manual or the thing simply doesn't do what it's advertised to do. There are lot's of reviews parroting the features from NewEgg's description, but not one who claims to have the webcam server working. Don't simply repeat the features. If you haven't used a feature, don't tout it as a "PRO" when you don't even know if it works. Comment:
Very disappointed in Asus. If they had included a comprehensive manual that was understandable and didn't assume a lot of prior knowledge they may have a winner here. I can't count the number of wasted hours trying to get this thing to do everything it says it will do. If you want to waste your time EXPERIMENTING to try to figure out how to get this to work then BUY IT. If you value your time, until someone posts alternate instructions, forget this router unless all you want to do is connect your home computers to the internet and share a USB (slow) hard drive. I can hear it now - "people who don't know what they're doing should complain". I'm not asking Asus to hold my hand. I'm simply asking for a manual that clearly explains HOW to do things that I already understand how to do on other routers yet for some reason Asus chooses to ignore. Is anyone actually streaming a webcam? I'm also not loading 3rd party firmware to get the advertised features to work - I shouldn't have to. |

Excellent router, not for novice
Cons: 1. The flashing process is more involved than LINKSYS.2. No 5.2GHz
Pros: DD-WRT mega firmware compatible32MB RAM (This is 2x or 4x more than most )8MB FLASH (will fit DD-WRT mega firmware)802.11n Comment:
1. Make sure you following DD-WRT flashing procedure step by step. It requires flashing 2 firmware and 3 resets.2. When connecting with INTEL AGN card, do not use WPA/TKIP combination. It just doesn't work. Use WPA/AES or WPA2/AES instead.3. If your wireless card is compatible with 40Hz channel width, using this setting will give you higher bandwidth. |

ASUS WL-500W MULTI-FUNCTION Wireless Router 802.11B/G Draft N Bit Torrent FTP Print Server USB
Cons: Wish it had esata port and gigabit Ethernet Then I would use it as a file server also :)Bricks Easily But unbricking this unit works.I used the pin 9 method others used different methods.(once I got dd-wrt on no more problems)
Pros: It works with dd-wrt, has two usb 2.0 ports and has run really solid for the last 8 months. Comment:
I use DD-WRT v24-sp2 (01/01/09) mega (SVN revision 11296M NEWD Eko) Firmware.I use both USB ports, one with network laser printer, and the other a usb flash drive.I bought this unit for being dd-wrt compatible, and I would buy it again. |

defective power adapter; no customer service
Cons: faulty adapter; dismal customer service; high price (don't forget to add the cost of buying the adapter replacement).
Pros: it works though nothing special. Comment:
the router went dead in exactly one year. it turns out to be a faulty power adapter. did a bit search on asus's forum and found out that there are a lot of power adapter failures in a year or 2 on this model. tried to call Asus to get a replacement for the adapter. no avail. it claims the one year warranty is expired because it is based on the manufactured date. brilliant, isn't it?to add the insult, i never got the rebate back. |

Stay away from ASUS
Cons: -Drop WAN connection all the time, very hard to connect(My old wireless G was much better)-Router interface is not very friendly-Additional utilities are not stable-Only FAT32 supported which makes it almost useless-Very slow USB share stream signals even with wireless N at 270mbps-I had very bad experience with ASUS motherboard in the past few years(about 5 of them went dead after about 2 years). This was and will be the last ASUS product I would ever try.
Pros: -Strong long distance wireless N. That's about it. Comment:
-It has great features if it works as the spec. I personally want to share my 500gb usb as a NAS. This router made it possible as it sound. I brought it and tested it for over a week, wireless N connection was not working as expected(much slower than I thought). WAN connect was not stable as my old wireless G router. Although I was connecting at 270mbps, the max I have experienced is about 50mbps when share files from USB(router) device to PC, and about 60 ~ 65mbps for PC-PC. Torrent was not able to work since my external HD is in NTFS format(and no, I won’t convert back to FAT/FAT32 just for this purpose). -Another feature that is unique to this router is bandwidth management, it sounds very nice and you might think you can limit bandwidth by IP address as I read the spec and user guide before buying it. The answer is no, you cannot limit bandwidth by IP or MAC, you can only shift bandwidth with their preset profiles.I ended up returning even I lost 15% plus shipping. |

Good router, HORRIBLE to flash
Cons: Does not flash with DD-WRT without bricking at least 3/4 routers. It *is* listed as a supported device. It *does* work on maybe 1/4 routers attempted.
Pros: Great wireless strength, good hardware Comment:
As many of us do, I flash my routers with DD-WRT. Let this be a warning, this is possibly *the* most difficult router on the market to successfully flash. I had it flashed with dd-wrt mega generic, and working as of Wednesday evening. Took down the router earlier today as I was moving my office, plugged it back in, and.... dead.None of the recovery methods (asus, etc) will work. It would be possible to redo it by adding a JTAG to it, but I guess this was a painful lesson learnedDo *not* flash this router. If you want to get a good asus router to use with DD-WRT, stay AWAY from the 500W, go for the G series. |

Maybe I got a bad one
Cons: Worked for a short while. Did not seem to setup DNS correctly from my cable modem provider very reliably. Didn't trace any packets out, just decided to send it back. Seems to take a long time for my wired and wireless computers to get connected. The web interface screens look kinda half baked. I upgraded to the latest firmware but nothing helped.
Pros: Asus. Willing to try a wireless router brand I haven't before. Comment:
