Plays lots of video formats, interface is pretty slick Rapidly forward only does 30 seconds at time. Iow, unusable.Couldn't even login on initial power on, had to flash firmware for that (networking was working but the software thought it wasn't.)Continual crashes when the screen saver went on.On random crash wiped all my settingsAnd finally, following much less than 1 week, RED FLASH OF DEATH. It's dead jim Seriously, this is a *terrible* item. I think the hardware is there, but this application is buggy and shouldn't have been released to paying clients. Also, netflix on the ps3 is slightly better. The ps3 version starts the video quickly at a low bitrate, as opposed to the boxee box which start incredibly slowly at a high bitrate

This is an update from prior review of 12ቪ This is an update from previous critique of 12ቪ I have figured out that it was some sort of handshaking concern with my existing Tv. It is operating correctly when connected by means of HDMI capable reciver. It is a wonderful tiny gadget and does what it is advertised to do.I just wish Boxee had a little greater support concerning this problem. Dlink is shipping an RMA replacement without any queries. It appears boxee is on the ball with firmware updates as two have been released in the last month.I would also like to indicate that several of the sour grapes of my past overview have been resolved and rate it 4 eggs

This device is best for these who are looking to stream files locally. It has played every little thing I have thrown at it flawlessly, Such as bigger 1080p MKV files. There are many Television channels that allow you to stream select shows. Comedy Central, History Channel, FX to name a couple of. There are also several other apps that allow you to stream You Tube, College Humor, and a lot of other world wide web video. I think this section has a lot of possible for further development in the future. I know that Boxee is operating out a deal with Netflix and Hulu Plus. I'm certain they aren't organizing on stopping there! The computer software is rather effortless to navigate even for the non-technical. I have had a few pals trying it out and they have been capable to choose it up rather speedily. I don't have a lot of complaints. I have only been using this guy for a lil below a month. I think it has great prospective but has yet to maximize what it can do. Hence why I was unable to give it 5 stars. That being stated, the apps section, movie and Tv channel selection is nonetheless in it's infancy. There are various apps offered but most them aren't of great excellent. Don't get me incorrect, there are nonetheless some great streaming content material accessible. But if you are expecting to have access to all the big network's show choice by means of on-line streaming you will be disappointed. I'm positive that will adjust with the addition of Hulu Plus and Netflix in the future.I enjoy the remote style but it could use a back light for operating in the dark. Not a major deal, just an thought. Hardware want that is my only complaint if you want to even contact it that. I would absolutely suggest the Boxee Box for a person that has a lot of digital content material on a computer or external harddrive. It tends to make displaying your media on your huge screen straightforward with no a want for a complete blown property theatre Computer stuffed into your entertainment stand. Now if Boxee could only get an ESPN and Major Ten Network app so I could watch my college football I wouldn't have to have cable for those fews months each year. :-) hint, hint...

it plays Every thing (like XBMC). Calls for no tech knoledge (like XBMC). I've attempted just about every media player on the market and this is the a single i'm replacing the XBMC boxes with one at a time. No physical media playback. Everything streams from the Buffalo NAS. I would have paid โ much more for a tough drive (the miracle of a 2tb hdd and rsync would have worked wonders), โ additional on top rated of that for a DVD player, and โ again for bluray. I know, this is the price tag of a PS3 or Xbox360, but with a laser focus on Video/Audio. This issue is as close as it gets to excellent. Oh, and the remote is totally great, if it were backlit, it would be excellent. Once more, this is hands down the greatest device on the market place.

This box is certainly an amazing central media hub for home use. It plays internet videos in a snap and pulls my home video files from the NAS drive in no time. It solved all my online and network multimedia needs in one place. The keyboard on the remote makes typing letters and numbers in the search box very easy. All this box is missing is recording capabilities.

I mainly bought this to stream all my neighborhood content from a central personal computer (Rather than watching through xbox/ps3). Connects incredibly quickly to my Win7 computer. All I had to do was browse for sources and input my login data and I was set. Adding nearby content material is quite effortless, and all shows/movies identify with IMDB, which I really like. Overall, does everything I want. Desires Netflix (Coming Quickly even though). The user interface could use a small bit of work, but overall functions really effectively. I'm not a large fan of watching on the net shows, simply because a majority of the time it just requires you to a internet site and attempts to make a flash player full screen. The cursor for web page browsing is also pretty terrible. I can definitely say this was a fantastic obtain. It streams all my shows flawlessly across my network. I can manage all of my shows and motion pictures from my Computer now, without obtaining to move difficult drives around. The online content material was just an added bonus to me personally. Once they add Netflix to it and polish the user interface a bit, that makes five eggs for me.

Does not yet assistance Netflix, but it supposed to just before the end of 2010. Genuinely, genuinely modest. Effortlessly hid it behind my tv, no need to have to see it since the remote is RF. Design and style, remote with QUERTY keyboard, boots speedy, silent. I returned this 3 days right after receiving it. It's an understatement to say that individuals have had difficulty with drive mapping. 3 days of troubleshooting to no avail. I'm a Network Engineer with 10 years of expertise and I couldn't get this issue to map drives from my Pc correctly. As for the responsiveness of Boxee help, my queries, aid desk tickets and emails went entirely ignored. It has been weeks because, and two of my three requests have nevertheless been ignored. For the life of me, I can not understand all the glowing reviews. 1 appear at the volumes and volumes of problems tickets and "issues" recorded in the Boxee forums must convince you that this item basically does not function as advertised -- and I haven't even described the lack of HULU, Netflix, the unchangeable household web page, and the emphasis on net Television channels over Music and video files. When Boxee addresses the critical problems with this, it may well be worth it - but absolutely not proper now.

No one particular has talked about the truth that Boxee (software/firmware) effortlessly identifies most of your media and obtains artwork and descriptions without any interaction from the user. No it's not excellent but if far surpasses the list of file names that I had to sort by employing a gaming process to stream.Speaking of which the game process can't touch the codecs this factor will play. I have yet to locate a format that isn't supported (not that I'm searching actual hard). As often... Newegg shipped unbelievably rapidly. I have had a couple of situations exactly where I've managed to lock up the unit. I don't know if it was from a feasible lag elsewhere in my network, a bug in the firmware or if I rushed the essential presses on the remote but none the much less, I had to challenging reset it.1 egg deducted for the resets - hopefully resolved in later firmware updates.Extremely Minor and won't influence everyone - - If the Iphone remote handle app is employed make positive there are no remote wars with your kids due to the fact it will connect with out any authorization from the unit as extended as they are within the very same network. As acknowledgment to the mapping network drives problem pointed out previously. I'm not employed in IT but I am knowledgeable. The unit is slow to scan and organize the media, on the other hand I have found you can access a 'mapped' drive instantly beneath the files tab.I also agree that I don't care substantially for the world wide web content material and most of my media is self hosted. Nonetheless, some of the media and apps accessible are cool (but sparse).Any of my minor troubles have been resolved with the most recent firmware/software updates and have created me even much more pleased with this unit. If you have a substantial digital media collection Boxee is perfect for you, but if you have any doubts you can often try the computer software just before you acquire. Personally I feel Boxee Box out performs it's stand alone computer software.

Agree with reviewer below. The true potential of this device is to stream local and internet content in a user friendly interface. With each passing month the device had more and more bugs and less functionality. The boxee support service does not exist any more and the device is dying a slow death as technology around it advances. Soon it will be a very expensive way to play some (not all) local media only. I would give it one star, but couldn't since I bought it elsewhere and NCIX demands and order no. for 1/2 star reviews.

Pushes 1080p and 720p without stuttering (over ethernet).Hundreds of apps and shows. It's tiny. S/PDIF output for digital audio.Nice tiny remote with complete qwerty keyboard on the back.Friends feed is kinda cool.I replaced an old Computer that I had set up as an HTPC with this and it essentially performs better. I had an old P4 three.four with 3GB of ram and it would stutter and choke trying to push something over 720p. This factor does it with ease. Digital audio outputs is nice and sounds wonderful on my 5.1 method. Now clearly, there are bugs and matters, but the boxee group assures that they are working on fixes. The 1st challenge I had that was sort of a pain was setting up network shares. This is an concern A LOT of individuals are getting and it took a fair amount of time to in fact get it working. Navigation is still a bit clunky, but it functions.Apps are ok, but generally a discomfort to work with. The navigation on the apps is sort of lame. Some work well, but other people are kind of garbage.Shows are meh. Fundamentally they go out to a browser and you're lucky if the top quality is any good, or if you can in fact watch it, which is not the case with any video hosted on comcast from my practical experience. 1 exception is South Park. They have ALL the episodes and they're all available in Very very good high quality.Motion pictures are essentially non existant. They have a large list of films that come up, but they're all garbage so its pretty significantly a waste of time. This is not on the aspect of the actual box, but naturally the wireless is worthless. There's no way to push high def over wireless so you need to have an ethernet cable going to the system. I genuinely like this box for streaming media I currently have. It pushes anything I throw at it, and it's got a genuinely smaller form aspect. That's why I gave it four stars. Definitely there are glaring concerns and bugs and navigational things nonetheless to be fixed, but the boxee team is at present working on producing modifications from the suggestions of the customers. If you want anything to watch apps and on-line television, this may not be the greatest option, but if you want to stream stuff you currently have, I suggest it (as lengthy as you can get your shares working)

Does exactly what is advertised. I truly like the mini keyboard remote combo. Plays every little thing I want it to. Anything it does, it does a very good job of for the most component, but demands a small much more polish (see cons).Incredibly cheap. It runs open supply application, and as an IT guy, that to me is a bonus. It is Very cumbersome if you have a big music collection.I spend much more time searching for the subsequent song I want to hear than listening.Only sorts a local music collection by artist and title... period. Requirements Genre and Year added at least. Also demands some type of playlist or jukebox function. When on the regional music screen, wanting to search for an artist in YOUR collection, it searches the Web. The random photographs it generates for "Artists" are more annoying than valuable. At least permit it to be user configured so I can chose an album cover related to said artist presently in my collection. Pretty considerably all the exact same can be stated about neighborhood movie collections, but it is way ahead and additional polished.Absolutely lacking helpful "sort by" options.Really minimal configuration choices. Far from what is required. That may possibly be a pro to some but not me.Remote not being back-lit is a minor annoyance. Like 90% of all open supply projects, it's not quite prepared for prime time or mainstream shoppers. It's not D-Link's fault though. It is missing a lot of core functionality most customers would want on a "complete product". The hardware is there, it's the Boxee application. I have a very huge and meticulously cataloged music collection and it leaves me desperately wanting more alternatives, stuff that need to be there even for little collections.I also have a vast movie and recorded Tv show collection that while it does much superior with, nonetheless falls short of mildly impressive.I genuinely love the notion and the hardware, but the computer software is far from ready for the common public correct now. It is open supply so I do have hope that soon I will get an update that resolves the lack of fundamental functionality I described in cons.

I picked up the Boxee Box with only a single thing in thoughts: streaming local 720 and 1080p content on my personal computer over my network to my Tv. I'm content to say that for this purpose only it's an wonderful item. Right here's my set up: my content material is mainly h.264 MKV files hosted on my Computer which is connected to my router through WiFi 齢.11n). My Boxee is connected to my Television through HDMI and to my router by way of ethernet. So far it's played every format I've thrown at it and completed a decent job with high bitrate 1080p h.264 content material. It appropriately decodes DTS and Dolby to my receiver/sound method. I have however to encounter any "out of sync" troubles. I totally adore the remote and the interface. Mapping network drives (i.e., my tricky drive on my Computer) was particularly easy. All I had to do was proper click on my HDD in Win7 and set it up to "share". The Boxee instantly located my drive and I was in a position to browse content material with no issues. If you want to stream neighborhood media to your Tv, this IS the item for you. When my wireless network is flooded with devices OR other devices are actively using bandwidth, I encounter some buffering concerns with 1080p content material 鼐p is fine). The network is clearly choked and unable to handle the high bitrate stream from my Computer more than WiFi. I suspect if I had both my Computer and Boxee connected by way of ethernet this would not be an problem. Additionally, if I didn't have a mixed mode network 齢.11g and 802.11n), it almost certainly wouldn't be such an situation either. (when 802.11g devices are connected, my N router automatically rolls back to G).The net content material requires perform. VEVO, YouTube and Pandora work practically flawlessly, but a lot of the apps like Comedy Central, Adult Swim, and other basically don't function. Moreover, quite a few of the streaming "apps" refuse to set up. If you're obtaining this device solely for streaming world wide web content material, don't bother. When netflix and Hulu are offered, it may be worth it. The Boxee remote app for iOS sucks... incredibly basic and useless. Would be nice to have much more control over content material presently playing (i.e., subtitles, sound, and so forth). The remote is super cool... I love possessing a QWERTY keyboard. I've had NO issues with input or getting to point it directly at the Boxee (very nice!).It's very, very snappy. There's small to no lag navigating menus and content. Did I mention how straightforward it was to grab content material off your Computer? Oh and uPNP works good as well... Azareus/Vuze comes right up.It's uber quiet and unobtrusive... you hardly notice it's presence. For 赨 this device is an amazing bargain. Much superior than AppleTV if you want to stream neighborhood content material... and let's not forget AppleTV is restricted to 720p. Boxee does 1080p!!!
