4 drives, 4 dead
Cons: I ordered 2 of these for a RAID 0 and they both threw SMART failures on day 1, and exhibited < 10MB/s write speed. I sent them both back, paid $12 for return shipping, got 2 new drives, and now I have the same problem... impending failure and AWFUL performance.I will never buy another Hitachi again
Pros: Paperweight Comment:

Great Drive
Cons: none
Pros: Very impressed with this drive, so much faster than the green drives. Runs just as cool as a green drive that I have. Comment:
I need another one so I can mirror it, I get nervous having so much data on one drive. |

Working Well
Cons: Only 3 year warranty. What happened to the 5 year warranties on hard drives?
Pros: Current best price per gig anywhere. Works very well in Windows Home Server. Runs fairly cool. Comment:

Fast, quiet, cheap cost per GB
Cons: None.
Pros: This drive is fast and it is cheap.I've added three of them to my HTPC since the end of January. I have them sitting in a nice fat array, about 5.45 TB. Comment:
I can't wait to start slapping these into my WHS machine for backing up media from my HTPC. |

Dubious quality
Cons: DOA day 1. Made a clicking sound and did not spin up in both machines. Gave it a tap and the drive started to spin up but again clicking sounds. Disappointing.
Pros: Low $ per TB Comment:
Perhaps draws too much power for normal machines?Disappointed that I have to pay fr return shipping. Come on Newegg - you can do better than that (your competitors do) |

Works fine for me
Cons: None.
Pros: Low price, plenty of space, works fine so far, 3 year warranty coverage just in case, what more could you want? I'm using this drive in an external enclosure, it's not any louder than my other drives. Comment:

mixed reviews
Cons: None on the first drive, second was DOA.
Pros: The first one I ordered (OCT-2009) has been outstanding (5 stars all the way) and cost under $140. I keep it and my BlacX box (and my laptop) with me wherever I go and even after being left in the car at freezing temperatures it continues to be fast and quite!Yesterday I ordered another and received it today DOA. Couldn't understand all the reviews about the noise untilt now... Placed drive in my BlacX and man did it chatter... but, sad to say, after a few minutes of turning and growling, it winded down to a stop and did not register on my computer... today (after ordering just yesterday) the item is out of stock, or no longer available.Newegg issued RMA and prepaid return shipping label. Comment:
OCT-2009 drive exceeds my expectations in all areas.DEC-2009 drive (received 4Mar2010) was DOA.Since this drive (OF10311) is not available today, I ordered the (0S00164) instead. |

Good Value
Cons: None really
Pros: Cost, Size Comment:
I have got 5 of these now over time used in a DAS and they have been very dependable and consistent. They do run a little hotter then some of my other drives but wont knock it for that. Performance read /write speed average but respectable for the biggest drive out there now. You can get these for $140 if you can wait for specials. |

Perfect
Cons: None
Pros: This drive is just as quiet as the rest of my drives, if not quieter. It's not any hotter than the rest, possibly even cooler. For the price, it's the best deal out there. Arrived in about 3 days. Comment:

so far so good
Cons: Runs hot if no air flow across it.
Pros: Not expensive for the size. Pretty quiet. Comment:
NTFS 64k format comes out to 1.8TB usable space |

Not as loud as I though
Cons: The only con I find with it is that I ordered two and one was DOA and I had to send it for replacement. I had to spend an extra 10 dollars on shipping back to Newegg. See other thoughts.Another con is that this HDD sells so fast that every time I want to order one they are in back order.
Pros: Excellent Price and Performance: This and the WD Black are the only 2TB and 7200 RPM HDD right now except that for the price of the WB Black I could buy two of this (literally). All other 2TB disks rotate at slower speed despite being even more expensive than this one.Good Reliability: Most bad reviews about it complain about the noise which by the way I didn't find bad at all. However, I don't remember anyone complaining about reliability as with other brands. For me, the reliability is much more important than the noise but again the noise is not bad. I have two that were manufactured in Dec-2009 and maybe they fixed the noise problem now. Comment:
I believe the cause of the problem is that the drive have been hit. I know it has been hit because there is a small bump and crack in the board. This is Newegg's fault or UPS fault but not Hitachi's fault. |

Worst drives ever
Cons: They die like flies. Stay away from these if you value your data.
Pros: Cheapest 2TB drive on newegg at the time of purchase. Comment:
I bought 6 of these for a Netgear Readynas Pro. 2 of the drives were DOA. I set up an RMA for the 2 dead drives and ordered 2 more new drives with overnight shipping. When I received the 2 new drives one of them died within a half hour of use. So out of 8 drives 3 of them are dead within the first day. To make matters worse, my readynas is detecting a large number of read errors on another drive. So i expect it to die soon. Thanks alot Hitatchi!!! Now I get slammed with the shipping costs + 15% for a restock fee and I'm out another 2 weeks before I get my server up and running. What a nightmare. In the past I have had good luck with Western Digital 5400rpm drives for my large server needs. So I will send these back and get some real hard drives. |

Best 2TB Drive Avaliable!!
Cons: Loud random R/W soundsCan be fixed to almost a whisper by adjusting the AAC to 128, but you sacrifice performance for it.
Pros: Best space to price ratio. $.07/GBFast speeds 120mb/s No other hard drive on the markey can compete with this drives price to performance ratio.Great drive for servers if you have one.I'm getting 95mb/s sustained write speeds with this one in an external enclosure (Fantom Green Drive Pro) Comment:
Would love to run this drive in RAID 0 along with my OCZ Vertec Turbo SSD |

Great drive
Cons: None that I can think of.
Pros: Great drive, it run nice and smooth at an average temperature of 40C or 103F. Comment:
Running on a Windows 7 Professional. 1.81 TB after format, this is binary, not decimal, remember that children. |

Performs as Advertised
Cons: Hitachi name may give some pause
Pros: Low price, 7200RPM, 2TB storage capacity Comment:
Problem-free hard drive performs as advertised. |

seems to be fine
Cons: wasn't free?
Pros: Seems to be fine. Balances out some Seagates and WDs in my Drobo, so theoretically a vendor-specific mfg defect won't take out my data. Comment:
It's in a closet, so I can't tell if it's loud. It definitely isn't as loud as the Seagate 1.5TB drives I have. |
![]() Rating: Review Date: 02/14/10 |
Works well but.......
Cons: They are REALLY Buzz-saw noisy, especially since I have them running in a pair. I have them both in my server in my garage so that's kind of OK for me but this could very easily become a significant annoyance if one were to use these in a bedroom computer.
Pros: Large size - 7200RPMs. Caught the right price on that fateful weekend $139.99 each and free shpg for 2 drives! Performed a full surface test on each - no SMART errors, both passed. Comment:
Surface testing took about 5 1/2Hrs each and they do seem to run a few degrees higher than others. I used the Seagate test to verify them as the Hitachi test that I have would not detect them on my (nVidia NF590) controller. The Seagate test showed an overtemp state prior to testing but I tested them anyway and they are fine. I have both running now on my Ubuntu 9.10 server in a software RAID 1 setup and they are doing quite well - all 1.79 TB of massive storage |

Lowest Price/GB
Cons: It's an OEM Drive, but really no biggie, as all my retail packaged motherboards came with SATA cables.
Pros: Ordered 2, both worked, straight out of the box.I bought this drive mainly because it was the best price/GB availible on newegg Comment:

Disappearing Drive
Cons: When computer wakes up from sleep in Windows 7 this drive disappears. I have to reboot the machine in order to see it again. Very annoying. Going to put this in an external case now to gain more control.
Pros: Large capacityGood price Comment:
A little noisy but bearable. |

it's 2tb and it works
Cons: nothing.
Pros: it's 1.84tb of space when formatted and it works. just as fast as my other drives. Comment:
so people who whine that a 2tb formats as 1.84 just don't understand hard drives. that's what it's supposed to translate to! and those who complain it's slow, well, the wd and seagate are like 1% faster in my rigs and that's not enough to justify those prices they want!! if you are building a machine and want speed, get yourself a 10k rpm drive at NO LARGER THAN 500GB and if you want space get this as a slave drive. it's too complicated to explain but the larger the drive the slower you'll run. you want 500gb or less for your c drive people! |

for my 3ware 9690SA RAID controller
Cons: thinking to get 3 more drives but price jumpt to 159... also it looks like it runs hotter then my Samsung 1TB drives... my samsunf 1tb drives run at about 39C and the Hitachi 2tb about 46C
Pros: i got just one drive for 139 to test to see how well it works with my 3Ware 9690SA RAID controller. After 3 days it seems like its working well with the controller Comment:

Runs Hot, SBS2008 can't format
Cons: These drives should have fans on them. During an OS install, they get so hot that it hurts to touch them. I did not look at the SMART temperatures. On my hardware (Nvidia sata controllers), SBS2008 could not format during the install. I tried each disk, I tried each disk individually, I tried a fakeraid level 1 configuration, and nothing worked. I formatted these drives NTFS with a usb "toaster" on a win7 machine with no problems and then completed the SBS2008 install.
Pros: one thirty-nine can't be beat for 2T right now. A lot of storage. Both drives that I ordered worked. Comment:
This seems like a windows or a driver issue. The drivers that I was using were designed for Vista, so it's possible that SBS2008 didn't have complete compatibility with them. But, I did install Windows Server 2008 Enterprise on the same hardware with a Western Digital 300G drive and the same Vista drivers, and had no issues.I'm going to redo my installation with an ESX base and an md raid. SBS2008 should have no problems then...If you are going to put two or more of these in the same machine, you really need a fan blowing air in between them, or you will probably melt your computer. |
