Win7 Pro, backup your files - removing files
Comment:
Installing Win7 Professional requires you to backup all your hard drive files when doing the upgrade from Vista. All your files do get moved to the new folder it creates called windows.old but it is more difficult to recover them from this source. A full backup on an external drive will simplify their retrieval. Keep in mind though that programs such as Office, etc. are best re-installed from the original disk. Once you have established that the new installation is functioning properly you will want to remove the Windows. old file. In my case it was consuming over 50gb of space on my hard drive. The recycle bin has limited storage about 8gb. You must delete and empty the bin frequently, it takes time but once donce you will marvel at the improved speed once the hard drive has been cleaned and optimized. All in all, it's a good deal for $100 less than other suppliers are selling the upgrade for.

Extremely poor experience
Comment:
Tried upgrading a Dell Latitude D630 from Vista Business with 4GB memory and 500GB disk to Win7Pro. My issue was a continuing reboot loop after loading files. Experience in dealing with MS tech support was horrific and excrutiating. After 16 hours on phone calls and nothing more than 'try a clean install' - I am sending the CD back for a refund. This was an exercise in futility that didn't need to happen.

Windows 7 - ugh
Comment:
Could not get to load on a Dell XPS high end machine. Got hung up on a raid driver issue and lost all data on my 4 hard drives. Do not switch to W7 unless you have to.

like vista but plays XP games
Comment:
I installed win 7 into one of my hard drives, I have a tray system, now I have win XP on one drive, Vista on another, and win 7 on another drive, and I can swap out to any OS I want, with a processor (AMD)of 2.8 GHZ and 4GHZ of ram my computers fast, only XP is the slowest and it takes three minutes to boot up.

A fine operating system from the best company.

You made me an offer I could not pass up. The price was the lowest and there was no shipping or handling fee. It arrived on schedule. I am in the process of setting up a computer the way I want it, but am not ready to start it up yet. Thank you.

Requires clean install over Vista Premium
Comment:
Everything I had read indicated I could install over Vista Home Premium without having to re-install everything. I would have expected that if I was installing over XP, since the published information is quite clear that W7 over XP requires a clean install. It was not until I started the install that I got the message that W7 Pro required a clean install over Vista HP. I do not wish to spend a day or a week saving my files and re-installing all my software, especially since much of it is only for a single install. Obviously, I cannot comment on performance, but since the product cannot be returned, value is negative whatever I paid. I would still like to have W7, but I will have to wait until my next computer.

An improvement
Comment:
I upgrade to W7 from XP and am very happy with the OS(on a new box.) The kids have a Vista box and I was very unimpressed. Windows 7 definitely makes me a MS believer again.

Nice but still a work in progress.
Comment:
Overall, Windows 7 is impressive but it is easy to task saturate the OS and cause a crash. I like the layout and visual enhancements and the price was unbeatable by any measure. Thanks

Excellent OS, but...
Comment:
I used the RC version of Ultimate and decided that Professional had the features that I really needed. The only performance hit comes from the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service, this process is a massive resource hog, even when disabled. Microsoft needs to rewrite the software - maybe a patch?!?

LOVE Windows 7!
Comment:
It's 'Vista' FIXED and released like Vista should have been! Windows 7 is an excellent OS. As a local tech, I hated Vista. My personal systems all had XP Pro on them. But customers' systems, coming in with Vista on them, made me cringe. I was a MS Beta tester for Windows 7 and couldn't wait to get the final version. Beta tested on a lessor system, 768mb ram. So it was slow, while I tested. Other than that, it ran grrrreat as a beta. I was confident that once I got all my new parts & pieces and bumped my ram to 2GB or more, it'd be the best yet and I was right! No crashes, no freezing up, and with 2GB of ram, it's all I expected and then some. The Pro version is your best bet. Definitely no driver issues, unless your hardware is more than about 2 years old. My only recommendation is to be sure to buy the full install, NOT the upgrade.

Goodbye Vista
Comment:
I liked Windows XP a lot. Hated Vista because it would always lock up and crash. Windows 7 rocks. Easy clean installation on a new mobo. No issues with memory above 2 gig. Found all of my hardware. When games lock up Windows 7 forces them to close without making you have to reboot like Vista did. This OS is even better than the good old reliable XP. All of my games and programs that worked on Vista and XP have worked on Windows 7. I did install the Windows XP Virtual PC to run one older game and it works great. I highly recommend that if you can afford to upgrade to Windows 7, expecially if you have Vista, do so. Goodbye Vista, we will not miss it!

I have a quad core pc, 4GB of RAM and this software works like a dream on this computer. I despise Vista and this software is actually better than XP is some ways and runs very fast. Microsoft actually put out a good product that us, the consumers, wanted this time. Tigerdirect, as always, got it out to me fast and answered all my questions about the software.

Great system but get the 64 Bit if you can
Comment:
Great system for the money but I would have bought the 64 bit if it was on sale as it is now for the same price as the 32 bit... I had trouble restoring old files from backup disk because it was from a XP pro system. But XP mode in Professional makes that possible if you can ever figure it out..It runs great on 2gigs of ram but I will add 2 more gigs later for movie editing. 32 but only runs 4 gigs of ram while 64 bit runs a lot more so go with 64 bit professional if you can...
