Hello, for those who don't know me my name is ayman, I purchased this little toy called Samsung TruDirect slim external DVD burner from NCIX for $95 Tax included, and first experience was that the drive reading and copying speed is not as advertised, the original box says this drive reads and writes at 8X speed for DVD+R and DVD-R so i noticed it does not read at 8X but 2-4 X speed, but the writing speed was ok at 8X, so I tried the Drive on multiple computers and laptops and it does the same thing the reading and copying speed does not reach the advertised speed 8X, so I loaded the newest Nero 9 package and I tried to copy a DVD+R and the drive act same way it does not read at 8x, the maximum speed i was able to read at was 4x, so I thought maybe the firmware flash and then i found out that my DVD burner comes out of the box flashed with the latest firmware flash but eventhough it was flashed with latest firmware I said maybe the flash is corrupted so i re-flashed it again with the firmware that matches the one on it since its the latest and then I pluged the burner back on the PC and it acted same way.So I decided to take it back to NCIX for replacement maybe its a faulty unit, NCIX replaced it and they said if this replacement act same way then it must be my computer which has a problem which i doubt because I have two brand new laptops and two Desktops so it can be 4 of them bad. so i took the replacement home and tested it again on my 4 PCs and guess what the burner did act same way (IT DID NOT READ AND COPY AT 8X SPEED AND IT MADE NOISE LIKE CLICKING WHEN READING,SOUNDED LIKE THE READ/WRITE HEAD WAS MOVING LIKE INSANE). so I called Samsung Technical support number 1800-Samsung and I was not able to understand their english very poor customer service and they kept transfering me from one person to another and I finally gave up and hang up the phone to find out that ( Tech Support number is nothing but a bunch of people with no Technical&communication skills at all).WRAPPING UP : I say overall I am not fully satisfied with this samsung product and to be honest I don't encourage you to buy it unless you badly need it, and I believe all this issue is caused by supplying power via USB port not via AC adapter. Cons: - 8x write speed- price

Pros: - compact- bus powered
Comment:
Very handy little dvdr drive that I used with my netbook for longer trips. The bus powered feature was very handy but the write speeds wasn't that great if you're used to desktop dvdr speeds.

I bought this for 120$ to use with 3 of my laptops.Over all I'm satisfied, but the initial "getting to know this thing" was very stressful. It came to a point where I swore at it quite frequently. The first thing I did was update  the firmware. I'm not sure who wrote the software, but it could have done with a far better English translation. It worked, but I don't understand why it wanted me to restart the OS.The Nero bundle... was a headache. Beware that it will install a CPU hungry media indexing program "Nero Scout" that doesn't have an uninstall feature. It sneakishly asserted itself into my Starbar, and I got really pissed off. At first I thought I forgot to uncheck it, so I reinstalled the suite to make sure, only to find out that it is NOT uncheckable during the install. It's possible to disable it, but I'm still angry at it for existing.I've been able to burn a bootable ISO onto a DVD. It works and it booted. So I am satisfied, but there was a moment when I considered boycotting Samsung for a year or two.My honest opinion, this product feels rushed. If you need something like this NOW it will do the job, otherwise wait for better.
