Works fine for me (MAC & PC)
Cons: Non So far
Pros: WOW a 500 Gig WD @ $109 (w/ free Shipping); Not sure why others are having issues i easily set this up to work on my MAC first, and as a test run backing up another external,. After that worked fine i then re-formatted the drive to a FAT-32 so i can use my Dual Book MBP and my PCs.. I'm using it as a DJ/VJ library with thousands of files.. So far so good (keeping fingers crossed ;) |

Not Suitable for Large Files
Cons: We bought this drive to transport video files and the inferior chipset it has simply cannot handle this task. When copying large files (25 gig plus) the drive constantly hangs up and crashes the Mac OS. I'm sure it's fine for smaller files, but if your going to put it to the task, it will fail every time.
Pros: Small and looks cool. Comment:

Don't bother getting
Cons: Doesn't work. Firewire never worked right. Now USB not working right. I have a WD 320GB USB (Black) and that works great.
Pros: 500GB in such a small package Comment:
Save your money and buy a different drive. |

Next best thing to USB 3 or eSATA
Cons: USB will not work properly if you do not use a short cable. It seems the longer cables offer too much resistance. This may be more of a computer issue than with the drive itself.
Pros: Fast, reliable, portable. Restores 50GB of data in about 15 mins. Will back up 50GB of data in about 30 mins via the Firewire 800 on a pc with an installed PCIe firewire card. Comment:
Would like to see WD use an aluminum case. The plastic case seems to work fine though. |

Great way to store & transfer data
Cons: Need to reformat for Windows compatibility, easy to do but still annoying. Turbo drivers only work on mac (but there isn't much speed difference).
Pros: Lots of space and high transfer speeds with Firewire 800. Comes with USB and Firewire 400 cables as well. Comment:
Other than the need to reformat to work on both mac and windows machines I have had absolutely no problems with this drive. It holds twice as much as my notebook's hard drive and transfers them quickly. Highly recommended. |

Works Fine Here!
Cons: None
Pros: I didn't get mine from NewEgg because I needed now.But Firewire is about twice as fast as USB. Using it on a MBP,Beware this drive is formatted for a MAC. Also I believe you have to install the software that comes on the drive to insurefirewire works. Works fine right now. Comment:
Will update if the drive stops working. |

Seriously guys, really, Firewire 800 doesn't work
Cons: Doesn't work on Firewire 800 or 400. When transferring large files, it will just go to sleep and stop working. However, the computer doesn't realize this. At best, you can force eject it. At worse, it crashes finder and forces you to rebuild your whole Macbook's fire structure. After that, I had enough.
Pros: Sleek form factor. I really like the sliding cover for the ports - keeps dust out when not in use. I also like the activity lights. Comment:
Newegg RMA is the best. However, you don't need to experience it for yourself like I did. Just avoid this drive. USB 2.0 works great, buy you can get a cheaper drive than this one. |

Awesome!
Cons: It won't give me a foot massage or quote obscene limericks. Seriously no cons. I'm buying another.
Pros: USB works great as does firewire 800. I haven't tested FW400 as of yet. That said, I'm currently using this drive as the time machine backup drive for my macbook pro as well as the repository for my music files. Despite the problems listed by previous reviewers this has been done almost exclusively via firewire800. Comment:

1394b doesn't work
Cons: Doesn't work on the 1394b cable. Sometimes it will work for a while, but on large transfers or extended use it will eventually disappear. USB usually works, but I have an Apple, so I don't want inferior USB connections.
Pros: Beautiful drive, great size, works w/o power cable, dead silent, sexy fuzzy pouch. Comment:
This would be a really amazing drive if I could get some speed and reliability. Having this sitting next to your macbook pro with only one cable can do all the heavy lifting when you're picking up Starbucks chicks. |

I have no problem
Cons: None.
Pros: I have two. One from Newegg. I use both firewire 400 & 800. I have no problems with either. I have a new 17" Mac and a very old 15". I use them for music and photo's. I am satisfied with this product. Comment:

would not buy this one again
Cons: As other people stated, I had issues when i hooked up my firewire. The drive would shut off on its own. I finally just started using usb. So far it stopped a few times during a very large file transfer. i havent had much time to play with it other than that, but if you are paying extra money for firewire, its pointless if it doesnt power it!
Pros: Western digital is a great company, i have never had problems with their POWERED hard drives Comment:
my mybook hard drives were all great! so were the internal ones i got. I know plenty of people with normal passports that like them, but the studio edition is not worth the money |

POC drive
Cons: Firewire doesn't work at all !
Pros: Works (slowly) with USB 2.0 Comment:
I purchased this drive for use with Firewire 800 (PPA 1189 Firewire 800 ExpressCard (Newegg item# N82E16839228003). The drive won't even spin up using Firewire.Unfortunately, I purchased this POC (piece of cr*p) drive before others posted similar reviews.Don't get burned by the lack of non-working Firewire feature. |

My first WD disappointment
Cons: Firewire interface works rarely and sporadically, making the drive useless as a platform for running VMs (which is why I bought it). In addition to the drive suddenly shutting off, it often locks up finder during large file transfers. The forced reboots finally made me give trying to work with the drive at all.
Pros: In theory the small-size/large capacity is a "pro", but since the drive doesn't function well enough to be usable, I'm not sure I can list those as pros. Comment:
I have two of the larger WD MyBooks that function just fine, so I found the Passport Studio a surprising disappointment. |

Firewire quit working
Cons: Firewire interface quit working after a week, USB continues to work fine.Used Firewire 400 and 800 maybe a dozen times over a few days withoutissue. A week later the drive fails to spin up using Firewire. Tried on anew Mac Mini using FW-800 and older Mini using FW-400. In both casesthe drive starts to spin up then just shuts down. Tried with and withoutWD's Mac drivers installed. Drive continues to work fine using USB.
Pros: Compact size, Powered by USB, Quiet, Works with Apple Time Machine. Comment:
I also have a Passport Essential (USB only) that I use at home to backupmy Windows PC and Mac Mini (on seperate partitions), it works great for both. I'd give the Passport Studio 5 stars if the Firewire interface worked. |

Bad drive
Cons: Useless. Overall rating has to be less than zero.
Pros: Nothing Comment:
My money is tied up while the RMA goes through. No money and no storage. Worst case scenario. Locks up my system. Didn't mount in FireWire. I was going to use the FW800 for FCP vid editing. Now, I don't have the storage I needed and my money is tied up with this DOA hardware. |

Firewire problems
Cons: problems with firewire transfers. it locks up my mac (finder) and i have to reboot often - no problems with USB2. Looking for solution online - no luck yet
Pros: Small size, big capacity, no ext power supply Comment:
Transfer speeds: FW800 is 40MB/sec, FW400 is 27MB/sec, USB2 is 28MB/sec. I should have just stayed with the USB2 interface. |

Western Digital My Passport Studio WDMT5000TN Portable Hard Drive - 500GB, USB 2.0, FireWire 400/800, Sliver
Cons: non really...just wish the case was made out of aluminum instead of plastic.
Pros: Small, Fast, convenient, reliable, excellent warranty, solid case and good price. Comment:
Firewire is underrated. I get more than double the transfer rate with Firewire 800 over USB 2.0 Lookout USB. I am getting about 50-60 MB per second which rivals the internal hard drive transfer rates and I have quick internal drives. |

Stay with the USB version
Cons: I bought this one expecting to get faster data speeds through the firewire connects - forget it. I tried 4 pin, 6 pin, 9 pin connectors. None give power to the hard drive. I feel like the extra money spent towards this was wasted. The connectors beyond the USB 2 do not provide power to the hard drive. I even tried getting PCMCIA card with 9 pin cabaility to troubleshoot it - no go. Stay with the USB 2 version of this HDD
Pros: Just compact size and data capacity Comment:
I am not against the passport - love 'em. This version just burned me with the inability to connect - so why give the option? |

Went corrupt after two weeks
Cons: I purchased this drive because of its firewire interface and form factor. I filled the drive with data and then left it connected to my file server and forgot about it, until two weeks later I VNCed into fileserver and saw dozens of folder or file corrupt error messages. Not sure what happened. I could not recover about 300 MBs of data, fortunately it was only backup. So it went back for exchange for a similar drive.
Pros: Solid build, 3 interfaces Comment:
A bit larger and heavier than the Passport series. |

fast and compact
Cons: zip
Pros: cable powered.size and speed as the title says. firewire 800storage capacity.I use it on a PC with no problems. Comment:
cloth pouch accessory doesn't feel good in the hands but that's really minor. |
![]() Rating: Review Date: 01/21/09 |
Just Awsome
Cons: These are formatted in apple journal ed which is perfect for MAC only use. Firewire 2 hasn't taken off for PC so these aren't many devices that use it. I needed to go from MAC to PC so I had to reformat to NTFS and load drivers for the MAC to support NTFS. If your using it for a PC make sure it's formatted for it or be warned you'll have to spend 10 min reformatting it
Pros: 500 GB in a wallet sized package. No external power and firewire 800. I'm able to transfer 12GB in 5 min realtime, it takes 12 for USB 2.0 and 25 over a 100GB network Comment:
