Dead in 3 Months
Comment:
Got one of these new days before Christmas as a Time Machine backup drive for my iMac in a WD MyBook external case that I did not move. Worked great for almost 3 Months. I just notice Time Machine had not backed up my computer in almost a week after the drive started un-mounting itself. Started to check it out and then any sign of the drive disappeared on any computer it was connected to no matter the OS. RMA process was easy (Doing Advanced Replacement), but just hope the new drive works out better than this. Can't afford to mess with a new backup drive every few months. Maybe it's WD's Quality or maybe it's CompUSA's handling of merchandise, but not a good experience. Would be a good value if it kept working.

Slowed to a crawl
Comment:
I have had this drive for little over a month. I got Windows7 loaded a little slower than I would have liked. It has been gradually slowing to a dead stop ever since. I have a 2G version of this drive and it is great. I guess it must be a QC issue. I am going to replace it and see if it will even function as a secondary drive.

Not desktop RAID compatible per Western Digital!!
Comment:
As of February 2010, this drive is not compatible in a RAID system. This comes directly from Western Digital tech support (I bought 4 of these drives). The trouble lies with TLER, an error recovery mechanism built into these drives. When a disk reports an error, the drive will spend considerable time trying to recover the data from the error. Because it can take minutes to recover, the RAID controller drops the disk from the array as unresponsive. WD used to have a utility that worked on these drives to limit the error recovery time to 7 seconds. As of November 2009, that utility no longer works on (some) of these drives.

So far so good
Comment:
I was a little worried about buying this HD because of reviews here, but I've had mine in for 2 months, and I've seen no indicators of a bad disk. It installed both win7 and ubuntu 9.10 fast, and I haven't had a slowdown or a data problem yet. The shipping policy hasn't changed. Brown paper stuffed in with the HDD, but it shipped in under 30 hours, not much time to go banging around. Seems to be running fine so far.

Western Digital WD15EADS Caviar Green 1.5TB Hard Drive SATA 32MB Cache 3.5IN OEM
Cons:- Average throughput ~65MB/sec

Pros:- Very quiet- Low vibrations- Good value, low $/GB.
Comment:
The WD Green line of drives are all very quiet. I recommend them to all my friends as media storage/backup drives. The 1.5tb is no exception. The drive only gets warm to the touch during long file copies.I use this drive in a thermaltake dock with windows 7. Runs perfect, shuts down after 20mins idle.

Western Digital WD15EADS Caviar Green 1.5TB Hard Drive SATA 32MB Cache 3.5IN OEM
Cons:Speed

Pros:SpaceNo issues
Comment:
Well, this is fairly simple to review. What this hard lacks, that being that its speed is about 5400rpms rather than 7200rpms, it makes up with hard drive space and no issues. This hard drive was designed to be run primarily as storage, and that's what this thing does well.

Western Digital WD15EADS Caviar Green 1.5TB Hard Drive SATA 32MB Cache 3.5IN OEM
Cons:None for what I paid for it.

Pros:Green - low power consumption, efficient etc

Bought this for my drobo which has gotten close to full on the 3 drives I have currently. Works flawlessly for my use. I wouldn't use it as an OS drive.2TB drives were/are still too expensive $/GB

Area father loses temper due to sudden HDD loss
Comment:
I had this hard drive for a few months and it suddenly didn't boot - master boot record not found. Slaved it to another system and virus scan never turned anything up and fortunately everything was backed up so no great loss. I will be sending it back most likely. I've had good luck with their stuff over the years so I don't want to trash them; maybe just a bad apple.

Failed out of nowhere
Comment:
I had this product for a week before it failed on me. My server no longer recognized it, and I nothing out of the ordinary to it prior to it failing. I'm returning it for another one (fingers crossed). Hopefully I made the right choice.

AVOID!!!!
Comment:
I had the same experience as others here. The packaging didn't bother me so bad, but there's just something that ticked me off about putting a new drive in your chassis and closing up the box, only to open up the box again 5 minutes later because the drive doesn't work. Poor craftsmanship....I could hear the drive arm moving back and forth in the drive trying to find it's starting point. RMA through WD was easy though.

Western Digital WD15EADS Caviar Green 1.5TB Hard Drive SATA 32MB Cache 3.5IN OEM
Cons:Best for storage not OS drive

Pros:CoolQuietCost per GB
Comment:
I now have 5 of these drives in a Windows Home Server setup. They stay cool with limited airflow and are quiet even while seeking. Best cost per GB until the 2TB models come down in price.FYI: The newer WD EARS with 4K Advanced Format aren't supported by Windows Home Server. Stick with the EADS models for now.

Caviar Green Drives High Failure Rate
Comment:
Hi all, Writing this just to pre-warn you, the WD caviar green drives have a high rate of failure compared to standard drives - not sure why. We've had three fail in the past month, none older than a few months (one brand new) and non of them are exactly under-load. I'd avoid for a while until the iron out the problems.

good stuff
Comment:
used this thing for about 2 months, no problem, bought it during boxing week deals. i used to have a WD 250gb that resets itself when it filled to about 100gb, it was a bad stick of ram that caused the problem

I got 3 of these on sale a while ago because they were the most affordable hard drives then from a trustworthy company. No issues so far. Cool and quiet. 3 platter design. They are being used for storage so speed is not an issue.

Western Digital WD15EADS Caviar Green 1.5TB Hard Drive SATA 32MB Cache 3.5IN OEM
Cons:Speed

Pros:Price, and Heat Throw
Comment:
These drives are great low power drives that throw minimal heat. i bought 4 of these drives to use in my mediasonic probox and they are on average 10 degrees C cooler than my WD black and Seagate drives. of course these arn't high performance drives, but they work great for storage operations such as use in a NAS.

Cons:- None

Pros:- Excellent price/GB

Bought one of these and am using it as the parity drive in my unRAID server. I've heard some bad things about the 1.5TB Seagate drives, so we'll see how this one holds up.

Western Digital WD15EADS Caviar Green 1.5TB Hard Drive SATA 32MB Cache 3.5IN OEM
Cons:-doesn't appear to support TLER aka SCT ERC, Time Limited Error Recovery or Smart Command Transport Error Recovery Control, apparently needed to run reliable in a RAID array.

Pros:-Inexpensive in terms of $/GB. Runs cool and quiet, ideal for use in an enclosed storage device with little ventilation
Comment:
-Great drive for using in a Apple Time Capsule/ Airport Extreme for a large amount of storage at a low price point.

Failed in 14 days
Comment:
The drive failed within 14 days of recieving it. It was not well packaged, but one could only speculate that this had anything to do with it. Even after reading the negative reviews on this product I decided to buy it anyways because of the price. Now however I realize it's not worth the hasle, your data is worth more. Long story short, if you buy this drive buy two so you can have a copy of your data.

WILL NOT WORK IN EXTERNAL ENCLOSURES!!!
Comment:
WARNING!!!! The new version of this hard drive is junk and will not work in external enclosures. If you get MDL: WD15EADS-00P8B0 send it back. Too bad we just ordered 2 to go along with an EZ-Dock 2. I can't put a link but you can search WD's forum for more information on the problem.
