Cons: Wastes some ink switching between photo and matte black, but not as much as some Epson models that require physically switching cartridges. Not very good for printing documents. No roll paper capability.Surpassed by other Epson models with newer technology and improved K3 ink set.

Pros: Superb photo print quality.Good value in a pro level printer, especially after rebate.Small size and weight for its carriage width.Reasonable printing costs for moderate volume usage.
Comment:
Google the Epson Stylus Pro 3800 and you will find plenty of glowing reviews so I won't say much about the print quality except that it fully meets my very high expectations both on glossy and, especially, matte papers. My very first print from it was excellent and every one since has been a keeper. When images are proofed in Photoshop using the supplied profiles and a calibrated, profiled monitor, the printed output is a remarkable match and there is no excuse for reject prints. The 3800 is much less satisfactory if asked to do double duty as a document printer. It is very slow, less than 2 ppm for plain text. Moreover, if photo black ink is selected the text comes out low-contrast gray, but a round trip switch between black inks will cost a few dollars in wasted ink. Best to maintain a separate printer for documents, a basic laser printer might be a good accompaniment. The drivers on the supplied CD are the original versions which are known to have significant issues, so I downloaded the latest drivers to start with. I installed the printer on my network, more complicated than USB and you MUST follow the instructions to set up the port, but the installation works fine on my Windows XP computer, including full functionality of the status monitor which was reported to be problematic with earlier drivers. So far I have had no joy trying to print at all from my Vista laptop but others claim full functionality in Vista.I was encouraged by a perfect nozzle check after not using the printer for about 4 weeks with humidity at 20%. My old Stylus Photo 1170 has a lot of clogging problems in winter but I have yet to experience a clog with the 3800. I followed Epson's recommendation to remove and shake the cartridges after more than 2 weeks of disuse.Be sure to check the epson.ca website carefully for rebate offers, which have been available consistently for the past several months for the 3800. It is not listed in the "Inkjet Printers" category, just under "Professional Imaging". I got back $200. Also, be sure to visit http://people.csail.mit.edu/ericchan/dp/Epson3800/index.html. It is THE essential resource for owners and anyone considering the 3800. The FAQ's especially are excellent. For a serious photo enthusiast or a pro who does a moderate amount of printing, the Stylus Pro 3800 is an excellent choice. It represents a sweet spot for value without sacrificing quality and its physical size is not too imposing in a home environment.
