Comment:
I like this printer-- text quality is excellent. Grayscale printing is good. Price point is good.Downside? It keeps track of how many pages are printed, and decides when it's out of toner based at least in part on that. Even if it's not out of toner. If you set the printer to default to duplexing, even single-page jobs get fed through twice, and I'm pretty sure it treats those extra passes through as page counts against the toner's life.Printing to it via USB with default drivers, it never gave me any warning before it suddenly stopped printing, 4 pages short of completing a major assignment. I turned to the internet, and figured out that if you hit the "GO" button 5 or 10 times when the printer's LCD displays "continue," it will ignore that it thinks it's out of toner. I've printed 50 pages since then.As far as I can tell, while it "counts" how much toner it thinks is left, the toner cartridge isn't electronically chipped, but the printer can tell the difference between the original cartridge and replacement cartridges. So you might have to buy one replacement cartridge before you start refilling them.At any rate, I'm happy with the printer, and I'd buy it again. It's my second Brother printer (first one I bought in 1998, and it lasted 10 years, until I gave it away because it didn't take USB!).
