Kind issue and physical size. Raid 1 is fantastic if you are worried about your stored data. Performance, appears actually fast This was a replacement sent by NewEgg for an out of box failure. None of this is Buffalo's faul. NewEgg shipped it in the retail box with no outer box for protection. Just shrinkwrap. Huh? Plus it had clearly been previously opened prior to I received it. Plus it took more than a week simply because it had to go to CA to be checked out. NewEgg requirements a greater RMA policy with respect to out of box failures. So this is a replacement for an out of box failure and my knowledge is 180 degrees different from my previous critique. This unit works good and configured devoid of any issues. I have been in make contact with with Buffalo about my terrible critique and they seem to seriously care and take this stuff seriously. Marco has changed my opinion of the firm and I am once once more a quite satisified client. This is in fact a pretty excellent product.

Functions as advertised Noise:The drive is loud, it's quickly the loudest factor in my room. It immediately begins rummaging (making seek noises) as quickly as I turn it on, even though it's not getting accessed. The seek noises are very loud, and the computer software does not permit to set the drives to use quieter seeks.Power usage:The drive makes use of 14W when it's on, and 2W (!) when it's off.The tough drives don't spin down, there's no way to set them to spin down immediately after 5 minutes or so of not being accessed, like you would in a normal computer system. The only "power-saving" choice is for the drive to go into standby mode when the last pc on the network that has the software program installed is turned off. So, if you don't want to install their application on each computer on your network, or if you have a personal computer that you in no way turn off, this feature is useless.Information is not secure:It is unsafe to basically unplug this drive devoid of initially turning it off. Given that the drives never spin down, any energy outage is most likely to cause da I wanted a drive that I could just leave on all the time, but for all the above factors, I just turn it on for a couple of minutes when I need it and leave it unplugged otherwise. This is inconvenient sufficient already, but in addition, it then takes a lengthy time (a minute or so) to develop into obtainable on the network immediately after power-on. I would advocate this drive only in an environment where noise and energy are of no concern and you in no way have power-outages. Not sure if such an environment exists though...

Can't say. Couldn't use the item This unit failed appropriate out of the box. Not certain it's sensible to by anything named Buffalo Technologies correct now. This was my third failure in the final 3 months. All had been new item that either had a defect or that developed a defect shortly right after purchase. I have 9 Buffalo drives and love the company but current expertise tells me that it may be time to discover another vendor for NAS. Manufacturer Response:JohnA, I'm sorry to hear that the unit arrived to you non-functioning. Please know that DOAs are a uncommon failure. All of our units that ship have passed a lengthy testing phase. Please speak to me so we can problems shoot or set up a replacement. I am certain you will be satisfied and surprised by this units overall performance once you get it set up and operating on your network. ThanksMarcomarcor@buffalotech.com

... yea my pros field is empty since there arnt any This drive is SLOW i mean i have a full gig network full cat six layout and i BAIRLY get 11MB per second. amongst two win 7 machines that are configured the very same way i get close to 70-80 and i would of thought a nas array with a gig layout could feed that if not far more when setup for raid . the auto on off function is practically nothing much more than a discomfort. This drive requires anywhere from ten-30 min to energy back up if its shut down. Manufacturer Response:drksilenc, please contact our help desk at assistance@buffalotech.com or contact us at 866-752-6210. The LinkStation duo really should give you considerably quicker speeds. I would like to see if we can difficulty shoot to see where the bottleneck is. You really should average involving 25 and 40MBps. Thanksmarco

The internet interface is really intuitive with quite a few capabilities nonetheless left to discover.File transfers are far much better than expected from previous critiques (installed on cat6 cable)Price is Right! User manual downloads but isnt tuly shipped, not even on CD.Nevertheless looking for drive removal instructions in the event of failure. Quick drive removal is an alternative but documentation is challenging to locate. In fairness I havent made this a huge priority. I preserve being surprised when making use of this wonderful device.I bought this when my principal machines drives showed indicators of failure and wanted data storage for seemless recovery in the event of failure. Setup was beyond easy with network name detection and the capability to lock IP promptly.Embedded mutiple server features make this a Excellent "bang for the buck" for an individual who truly demands a safe mirror for tiny enterprise use. Manufacturer Response:Ed, To remove your drives in situation of failure. The front bezel will pull off. No will need for tools. Then when the front cover is off you will be capable to pull on the tab above every drive to take away the drive. as soon as once again no need for tools. Also if you want to replace the fan on the back of the device, this is accomplished without having tools as soon as yet again.please email me if you have further queries.thanksMarcomarcor@buffalotech.com

It turned it on and it connects to my network, but it's useless as a backup drive for my mac. Completely does NOT Function with time machine. Tech support simply dismissed my call as a issue with time machine and I ought to contact apple about it. LOL. nice. Followed your guidelines and Time Machine can\'t even get out of the blocks. Sending back thanks really significantly. If any person from your corporation reading these critiques wants to give it a second shot. I never ever had an concern with time machine hooked up to any other drive! I assume it has to do with the way you guys setup the AFP server, but your fabulous internet tool has extremely small to supply on that front.

Connecting this to the network and accessing it as a shared drive was extremely effortless. The installation application ran with no problems and the Internet UI is also fairly straight-forward for making shares. Macintosh OS X specific functions, like Time Machine and iTunes server, don't perform out of the box. Be prepared to spend some time researching answers on the internet and a little time at the command line. For Time Machine, the Internet UI tools for setting seem to go as documented, but then they don't perform. You'll have to undo a couple of methods and then go to the command line to create a particular sparse image file and upload it to the NAS. For my two OS X ten.6 MacBooks, the instructions on the Buffalo assistance forum worked, but for my older OS X ten.5 Mac, I haven't located a solution but.Configuring the iTunes server also seemed to go as documented, but only the server shows in iTunes, and the songs don't. I haven't found a resolution in their help forum however. Also, it appears that you will need Windows to upgrade the firmware on the Linkstation, but fortunately the unit NewEgg shipped is only 1 rev behind current, and the improvements appear to be only relevant for Windows. I'm confident that with more time on the internet, or by posting a question to the help forum, I'll discover a way to make Time Machine and iTunes operate. I've only spent about half a day on it so far. But if you're expecting a plug-and-play Macintosh experience, this isn't it.Whilst copying a lot of files to the Linkstation, the Internet UI is considerably slower. That genuinely isn't a dilemma, but I recommend trying to get every thing configured before you start off important Time Machine backups or other operations.

Straightforward to set up. Works fantastic with time machine if you're on a mac. I've owned three diverse Buffalo NAS drives, two of which have died. I'm confident it's a matter of time for this a single also. Anytime I reboot the drive, or make any considerable alter (like adding a user or changing passwords, etc.), support for native media sharing in itunes just stops current, and I have to reset the firmware to stock, and redo all of my settings to get it back, which is completely lame. I keep shopping for these for the shared itunes library functionality. As soon as I uncover another company that makes a NAS with that feature, I'm divorcing Buffalo forever. Manufacturer Response:Zbo, I think there is one thing else in play right here that is causing this. We have attempted to duplicate your error and failed. We could stream music while making adjustments without a porblem. we also rebooted, added users, added shares with no a difficulty. We tried this on both PCs and Macs. We also tried to replicate your error on each PCs and Macs with the integrated software NasNavigator, Installed and uninstalled. Please e-mail me your speak to information so we can dive deeper into your network to attempt and figure out what is happening.thanksMarcomarcor@buffalotech.com

1TB of storage when mirrored. Effortlessly connects to all my other home networking devices (Laptops, desktops, PS3). I use it for backups and storing music, and streaming to my PS3 is excellent. It is a bit slow, with 7200rpm drives, but you really can\'t beat it for the cost. The setup of the device for use with other devices may well be a bit tricky for novice users.

Rapid information transfer rates - I see about 250Mbps on write and pretty much 300Mbps on reads, in RAID , gigabit ethernet, normal frames. Did not loose any data so far. Feels rapid compared to the other three Buffalo NAS units I have (HD-120LAN, LS-W1.0TGL-R1, and LS-CH1.0TL-R). Built-in backup function to external USB disk is broken - it stops randomly after some information is transferred. Initial firmware 1.24, present firmware 1.31. Nonetheless can not backup a 600GB information set with no at least one lockup - will need to power cycle the USB drive and restart the differential backup, ahead of it moves on. Most current firmware improves the concern, but it is not fixed but. Slowest net interface of any Buffalo NAS I have tried so far (I have three other models as well) - be prepared to wait 20 to 30 seconds for one thing to take place right after you press a link in the user interface. Looks fancy, with CCS and transparent windows, but it is painfully slow - a large step backwards in usability from prior units. Unit came with no external packing - got lucky and the two Seagate drives seem OK. Newegg really should at least supply the selection of spending ū much more for some bubble wrap to insure it gets to destination with no concerns. Manufacturer Response:Kitonne, please e-mail me your contact information so we can trouble shoot the USB backup problem. Often people today forget to reformat their USB difficult drives from FAT32. If you have a file bigger than 4GB that you are trying to transfer then the device would lock up. thanks!Marco marcor@buffalotech.com

Although I a tiny organization owner I am a newbie to the notion and utilization of a NAS device. However I know what I need to accomplish and therefore far I am exceptionally pleased with this product. Initial and foremost this device functions correct out of the gate. Plug in two cables (power and network) run an install CD and suddenly you got a two TB storage device that everyone on the network can employ! The initial thing I did was change the array from raid- and over to raid-1 (a mirrored set of disks for 1TB total storage). I was prosperous but it took much more effort that what I thought it need to (see cons).Following converting to raid-1 the very first factor I did was run my backup program (acronis) outputing to this device.A complete backup of my "c" drive produces a single 60 gig file. The backup completed in 95 minutes. This throughput /performance is a acceptable to me. My router and Pc use 1G network cards but the cables I personal are cat-5.* device comes with five license novabackup - a plus. * as a newbie I located the lack of a paper manual disconcerting.* as a newbie once I obtained a manual it was completely non-obvious what I required to click to convert/reformat my raid- into a raid-1 (mirrored) array. With about ten minutes reading I was in a position to muddle through it but hey it positive would have helped to have the documentation set emphasize what one particular desires to do and where in the config panels the tasks are found.* the overall performance of the setup panels is kinda sluggish but given that setup is a do it once and never look it for a year I guess any perceived sluggishness is ok.* when I converted from raid- to raid-1 the approach took various hours - confident would have been nice for the system to set my expectations on how extended that was going to take.* though this device comes with novabackup this fact is hidden in the install panels. you practically have to know to appear for it to come across it. nevertheless its there. My next activity is to compare it against acronis - with luck I will retire acronis Over all this device is proving that it will provide the backup/storage protection that I need - at a reasonable cost and at a satisfactory performance level. I would obtain this device once more if I will need more storage. I have currently shared my good results with this device to pals with related wants.

Straightforward InstallPlug & Play for RAID0SmallRapidlyStraightforward drive changeout and rebuild RAID! RAID conversion takes at least 5 1ǘ hours !Manual not really logical for setup methods. Has 2 WD 1TB drives. I am glad I preconfigured in shop rather of doing on-web site. Wish the manual had forewarned me; I was about to call assistance right after two hours. THEN I noticed I could slide the status bar under RAID settings to see what percentage it's on. BUT the internet interface logs you out just about every 15 min. or so. Luckily, how typically are you going to switch RAID modes? I assume this very same time period will occur if a drive fails and RAID desires rebuilding; better schedule this for overnight. Can Buffalo design auto refreshing web interface to indicate these extended functions in true-time for us impatient techies??Looks like a excellent device; just desires to have the reliability now!

1st one worked fantastic for a month. Second 1 worked (not fantastic) for a week. Each nonetheless respond to ping I guess... Each died. 1st 1 lasted about a month and the maximum transfer speed, even with jumbo frames set to 9K, was only 18MB/s. NAS ultimately died and was inaccessible through the internet interface, or even the shares. Second 1's interface was inaccessible from the get go and transfer rates had been a measly 6MB/s. I actually purchased the second 1 in hopes of salvaging my information. What a joke that turned out to be. It was effortless to swap the drives, but the new NAS did not like them and the only factor it did was respond to ping. I put the stock drives back in and used it for about a week prior to it died. DO NOT Obtain BUFFALO!!!! Manufacturer Response:Dave, Sorry for the difficulty you are experiencing. Please get in touch with me so we can trouble shoot. If the OS is faulty then it is feasible that there was a power interruption. I do not see any records from tech support about a concern like yours. They will be able to support you recover the OS. The cause your second unit was flaky was possibly because we began shipping with a newer firmware. 1st box you had does not have Active Directory support. The second unit you swapped drives with WILL support Active Directory and wont communicate with the other drives with the older firmware.regards,Marcomarcor@buffalotech.com

Lots of storage and features for the cost. Extremely effortless to set up (at least I thought so). Two 1TB Seagate 7200RPM drives. For the funds this unit is difficult to beat. Buffalo provided exceptional customer service (see below) Immediately after performing firmware update the net interface seemed to slow down, but this is not considerably of an issue considering that you don't need to have to access it a lot as soon as every thing is configured.Newegg's shipping approach leaves a lot to be desired. How do you package a power supply (in retail box) inside of a box of packing peanuts, but then ship a NAS with absolutely nothing but the shipping label on the retail box? Appears like somebody is asleep at the wheel on that 1. Newegg shipped this without having any type of protective packaging (shipping label appropriate on the retail box) and it arrived looking fairly beat up--this did not instill confidence in the condition of the challenging drives! Contacted Newegg and they stated I could RMA but would nonetheless ship the same way...which I uncover ridiculous considering that they package all sorts of other items of very same weight/dimension.I saw Marco (rep for Buffalo) had commented on another assessment and so I emailed him. I had a response right away and Marco personally worked out a brand new replacement to be shipped to us and supplied FedEx return shipping. Top Notch Service!!! He even stated that he was trying to resolve the way Newegg has been shipping these units. I can't say enough about how impressed I was with his communication and willingness to serve--one thing that is missing from all too numerous consumer service reps these days. This is why I give five stars!

Works well - sits in the corner and receives backups from all 7 of our computers. I have the two drives mirrored so there was no information loss on failure of 1 of the drives (see the Cons section). I am working with this strictly as a backup - not an external drive - and it works very well in that capacity. 1st two units failed. One worked for a week, then belly up. Replacement was DOA. Their support was responsive. Did some trouble shooting, then sent RA. They paid all shipping the second time around. The very first failure was one of the drives - they won't just send a new drive - liability issues considering that the case has line voltage inside. Too poor. Manufacturer Response:BCinNYC, thanks for the evaluation, I am sorry that the Tech Support individual misinformed you. The LinkStation Duo LS-WX2.0TL/R1 is built to make drive replacements less complicated. You do not need any tools to get rid of the drive. In the past, our previous model needed users to RMA the complete unit if a drive failed. But now users are able to just RMA just the failed drive. I have informed our tech support management so they can remind their team of the change. If you have any questions or concerns please make contact with me.Marcomarcor@buffalotech.com

Cons: - Slightly Slow Control Panel- Slow file transfer rates- Pretty slow even on wired Gigabit LAN

Pros: - Small Size- Quiet- Reliable- Intuitive Setup- Web Access- Individual User Controls- Good Price
Comment:
I bought this unit to serve as a small business file server - both for local file storage and as an easy way to make files available to clients. The buffalo webaccess portal (for accessing files remotely) is pretty slick but not very fast in responding to commands. The control panel takes a while to get anything done (needs to refresh everything for 3-4 seconds after every change), but everything in it is laid out very well. The amount of options available is staggering - I literally went through every tab a few times and kept finding new settings. The ability to setup a bunch of partitions, then individual users who can only access certain partitions, is a definite bonus. It allows me to create  accounts for individual clients without needing to take any complicated steps for ensuring data security. The unit itself sits nicely in a corner hooked up to a UPS and has been running 24/7 since purchase - never had to reboot it. Setting it up to run in a RAID configuration only took about an hour, and it was dead simple to do. There have been two firmware updates since purchase so obviously Buffalo is taking care of their customers. I have not used the printer server option, but I do know that the UPS I have it hooked up to (an MGE unit) is not detected by the NAS. I have and will continue to recommend this unit to anyone who needs a dependable, slick and user-friendly NAS at a good price.

Multi-featured, smaller form factor, low price, referred by a friend who has employed Terrastations for years with high reliability. Internet accessible (if enabled). You will almost certainly only use អ% of the obtainable capabilities, but they're obtainable to customize your application. None at this point. I delayed writing this review pending actual expertise/problems, but everything is OK. Setup Manual wants updating, in particular with regards to changing Raid configuration, and a common sense approach would help. Due to the fact of industrial encounter with shipping electro-mechanical devices (optical or magnetic drives) use FedX to ship, it's worth it in the long run. Also Newegg needs to revamp its packing procedures...item was not effectively packed (not wrapped in bubble wrap, but wedged to the side of shipping container with bubble wrap). I got lucky. I'm utilizing the Linkstation in a 1TB Raid1 configuration on a 100mbs Residence/Small Company LAN/wireless, incorporating 5 computers Ɠ desktops, 2 laptops) all running XP Pro SP3. Original media file upload 鶨GB) took 10 Hrs. Which is just about correct for the 100mbs LAN running at 75% of its rated speed, so the transfer rate is limited by the network. Auto power mode is a nice feature. As often, recognize the feature settings before you leap.

I bought this NAS for a home network. It works quite well but don't expect GB netowork speeds. I get between 23-28meg/s transfer. It is plenty fast for streaming video ot 2 different computers at the same time.I have had a couple times where it detects an error in the raid volume. The unit did not go down but it was extremely slow to rebuild. No data was lost. All in all I am extremely happy with the unit.
