It is made of plastic and feels flimsy in hand. The internal fan started going bad about 3 months after purchase. When I start up the computer the fan makes loud noises for about 30 seconds and then quiets down. I'm not sure if the fan is still spinning or if it is stuck.

I'm most impressed with the sturdyness and appearance of the product. It's easy to slide the tray in and out. I've read some comments about the fan being noisy, but I can't hear it over the five other fans I have in my case. Quite a din I'll telll you! I just ordered three quiet fans from Tiger Direct to replace some of them. Then maybe I can complain about the noisyness of the mobile rack fan ;-)

Bought this with two extra trays. The fans are noisy as hell, as in will fail soon. So far they seem to be hanging in there. The way the seat in to the tray with the latch stretches the plastic in such a way you will think it is going to break, but so far it has not. Overall all the plastic on it is flimsy.

decent product, construction is a bit weak, but not that bad. Hard to imagine that much noise from those little fans, but there it is. Super noisy. I only use for backup not a big deal. But I wouldn't want to run hear that racket all the time. Not really hot-swapable either, you have to have the key on to use it. Windows won't see it unless it powers up in the locked position. Nothing happens when you turn it on after windows boots. Nicer than external in my opinion because it integrates. I like it and I would get another if I needed it.

Cons: Build quality

Pros: Price is resonable

Overall the build of this item is good except for the fan. After a month the fan has started to make a fair bit of noise. The slim design of the faceplate/handle allows me to close the door on my case which is a good thing.

Cons: 40 mm fan is quite noisy (replaced it - see summary)

Comment:
This is the best, low cost SATA mobile rack I've used. The ones I used previously were longer and the handle broke when I was re-inserting the module; this one has a very solid handle. The removeable module that holds the hard drive has no connectors; all connectors are in the mounted rack, which is probably why they can keep costs down; seems to work reliably. The rack has a molded-in SATA cable, so you don't have to purchase one; the slight downside of this is that it is rather long, requiring tie-wrapping to keep case tidy.Hard drive activity LED on front, via twisted pair cable to M/B.The only thing that was annoying was the very loud single fan on the back of the fixed rack - mine are in HTPC's where everything else was purposefully very quiet; turned the key switch to activate the drive and suddenly there is the 'roar' of a hyperactive fan! I bought a Scythe 40 mm replacement, which unfortunately has a larger connector, so I had to chop wires and solder on the original fan connector. Yes the Scythe has a much lower CFM, so I was concerned until the drive was running for awhile and the air coming from the fan was relatively low temp. - not very scientific, but I will be doing real temp. measurements of the drive in the near future.Update on noisy fan - I currently have 3 of these & only 2 are noisy, 1 is fine; there is more air flow with the louder ones, but quite sufficient for the quiet one. I bought these in 2 batches, tried 1, then bought 2 more, so it could be that newer ones have higher CFM fans. The description only states SATA, but I am successfully running SATA II drives (direct connect in the rack - no additional electronics to compromise the high data rate)Highly recommend this SATA rack! These things are great if you have alot of external hard drives, for doing backups and especially if you have multiple computers. A couple of these and it makes swapping and backups rediculously easy. I've got 4 of these now.

I agree with Allen K. I am mostly satisfied; however, one of the units has a very noisy fan... louder than the rest of the fans in the system (5) put together... We'll see what their warranty policy is... ;-)

Comment:
purchased two of these drive trays in favour of the original EZ-SWAP. Packaging was quite nice, with all mounting screws, manuals ect.. Back of the Drive tray has a built in SATA + HD activity LED lead. The plastic handle and face are somewhat flimsy and the handle does nothing for locking the drive in place. The key must be locked for the drive to turn on. Downsides of this are, many motherboard don't have multiple HD LED indicators, and if they do, are for the IDE channels. As i'm running drives with a Highpoint RocketRaid 1640 4 channel SATA RAID controller. The HD activity LED would best be suited to run directly off the SATA interface PCB in the disk tray. Cooling is more than efficient even with a small fan. For the most part i'm quite happy with these drive trays for the overall look and operation.
