I bought this because I needed an enclosure to hold my stock Macbook hard drive when I bought a bigger one (so I could clone it). I wanted this one because I wanted both USB and Firewire.I bought a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter kit, only to find out that wouldn't work due to the placement of the connector.I instead modified this unit by disassembling it and drilling extra holes in the disk mounting plate for the screw holes in a 2.5" disk. My enclosure will now hold a 3.5" or 2.5" drive. This is obviously not recommended, as I strongly suspect it voids the warranty. I also have a strong electronics and mechanical background. I wish manufacturers would take the time to do the above so their enclosure were more versatile, but I guess they then couldn't sell you two separate enclosures.Besides that, it appears to work flawlessly. |

i use this with a 1tb backup hd on firewire, it's not insanely fast but it does the trick, im sure on esata it would be much better so i cant even blame the drive. comes with all cables you need to run either usb sata or firewire which is nice, looks great on the desk, all in all a good package. |

Bought 2 of these to go with 2 500WD Hard Drives. They are to Keep my imacs backed up user SuperDuper! I had a HD fail BIG Time on a mid 2007 imac. Do not hesitate to buy this HD and a Vantac 3 Enclosure to keep your imac/mac/PC backed up. We lost 10 months of pics/vids/data of our young children. note: verify that your computer is compatible with the interface on any enclosure ie: usb/firewire/esataThe mid 2007 imac and thereafter (as of this writing) compatible with the Vantec 3 enclosure (firewire bootable) This review was modfied by poster @ 08-02-08 11:25 PM |

Picked it because I needed Firewire for a specific application, and while this one was unrated, other Vantec enclosures have gotten good ratings on Tiger. It's so new that the Vantec site itself still shows it as a ''coming soon'' product. With a 500GB Diamondmax in it, both USB and Firewire work in Win XP and Kubuntu Hardy. Firewire is about 50% faster in Windows. Haven't tried eSata yet. Assembly was easy, but the manual could use some fixing to keep from confusing newbies - contrary to the manual there is no ''master/slave'' setting on SATA drives, and this box has no ''cable'' to connect to the drive (rather, the drive slides right into a connector on the internal board). Also correct orientation of the flippable LED connector is labeled on the internal slide frame but the label is hidden by the installed drive. PLUS - It comes helpfully with all 3 cables and an internal SATA-eSATA converter plate. MINUS - manual errors as above and it gets awful warm. |

My second Vantec case so far, their stuff has awesome build quality and the aluminum is great for dissipating heat when the hard drive is used intensively. The 3 interface is a bonus. |

Cons: Outer cover is a finger-print magnet. The included cables, especially the power, are short. Would have preferred a white case to match the Mac it's hooked up to, but the glossy finish is nice anyways. That's it. This is a GREAT enclosure!
Pros: The inner shell is thick steel, which greatly helps to diminish HD seek noise. The seemingly small plastic base is actually quite sturdy, and holds the case well. Handled a 750GB drive no problems, and was able to format and use the drive on both OS-X and XP systems with no driver installs or headaches at all. The front panel glows nicely, but if you find this disturbing it's easy enough just to leave the LED connector unplugged. Sata drive plugs into the internals easily and fits very securely once screwed down and into the case. Includes USB, Fireware, and eSata cables, as well as an internal Sata to eSata PCI-slot cover. Excellent product bundle. Drivers, not that you need them, are on a cute little 3" CD.. this is a brilliant pro-earth move on Vantec's part and I salute them for wasting less plastic where possible (aka oil)! Comment:
Needed a case with Firewire and USB connectors and Sata support for 750 or larger, and this looked to be the only quality option. Very pleased with this purchase, it's a very high quality case and the install took less than 2 minutes (6 screws, 1 LED wire to hookup, and then I plugged it in and off it went). Paired with a Spinpoint F1 750GB this is the perfect mobile drive, and a far better deal than the pre-built units! I own 2 nightclubs. All DJ music full wav files on HDs. After numerous problems & failures of external cases & HDs, even WD packaged external HDs, I tried a Vantec cases. They cost a bit more than the cheapies. But they are rugged, stable & solid. I now own 5 of these with WD 1TB drives and not 1 problem. USB operation with the players. Firewire & eSATA for fast transfers. I'm happy.
