Bougt it for my girlfriend to replace a more then 6 years old laptop. Overall, she is very happy with the new laptop, great battery life, nice sharp picture and it even has a DVD writer, it's very thin.In rebeate at 369.99$ Very good deal !I've put Windows 7 on it as soon as it came out of the box and it worked fine (after downloading the drivers from Acer website).

I've bought this for clients.Users that want a small, ligh, portable PCs at an affordable price.I've built these with Windows 7 for office users. When you have a Desktop and only want this for out of the office work. It's worth it.I've also bought the M5-481TG and this is THE EXACT SAME...except for the graphic card. The Windows + i3 model was being sold for 600$-700$.While this + windows = 520$

Cons: Missing Touch Pad Driver for Initial Setupno serial port

Pros: Light WeightAffordable Price2 USB3.0 Port
Comment:
Option for choosing Operating System to install. 3-cell lithium ion battery: up to 8.0 hours life is questionable. No complain for daily use.

Cons: * Default Linpus OS is completely useless; you will have to install a proper Linux distro on it* This requires fiddling with the BIOS to change the device boot order* Touchpad not enabled by default; must press Fn-F7 to activate it* Any type of upgrade appears to require taking the computer apart. Battery, hard drive and RAM are not easily user-replaceable.

Pros: * Fantastic notebook for Linux* No UEFI booting nonsense* Good value for money, very affordable* Hardware is nice and light* LCD screen is glassy, looks pretty* Everything works (so far, after 5 days), decent selection of ports (HDMI, 2 X USB 3.0, audio in/out, SDHC reader, RJ/45), and the battery life seems acceptable.

If you're looking for a Linux-compatible notebook at an affordable price, the Acer TravelMate X483-6856 fits the bill. I bought this notebook for my teenaged daughter for homework. She is a casual user and not a gamer, so she mostly uses Firefox and OpenOffice. We use Ubuntu on our home computers. The TravelMate is perfect for her needs (so far, after 5 days). The only downside to this TravelMate is that it ships with a completely useless version of Linpus as its operating system. It boots into a commandline console terminal, and there's no graphic user interface (GUI). Unless you're an experienced Linux user, this will probably put you off.The first thing that you have to do is install a proper Linux distro on the TravelMate. We used Ubuntu 12.04 because my daughter is comfortable with it, it's probably the most user-friendly distro out there, and this version has long-term support. We downloaded Ubuntu 12.04 from ubuntu.com, and burned it to a CDROM.Next, power on the TravelMate and immediately press F2 to get to the BIOS screen. Change the device boot order so that the CD/DVD drive boots before the hard drive. insert  your Linux install CD into the CD/DVD drive, then reboot the computer. It should now boot from the Linux install CD.The Touchpad is disabled by default, for some reason. It's probably a BIOS setting but I haven't figured this out yet. To enable it manually, press the Fn key (and hold), then F7. This review was modfied by poster @ 05-18-13 12:16 PM
