Cons: -USB 3.0 connector is on the front (for very good reasons, but is annoying nonetheless)-May be too expensive for some
Pros: -Looks very nice and fits in anywhere-ASUSWRT software is incredibly robust + easy to use-Seperate SSIDs for 5GHz and 2.4GHz bands supported-Range is phenomenal. I get reception on the 2.4GHz band down my street-Seperate processors for 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands-Wave 2 AC with all of the wave 2 features like MUMIMO-Compatible with time machine and able to host 2 network drives (via USB)-Very quick over wireless AC.-Custom firmwares such as merlin and tomato available |

Cons: - Very Expensive.
Pros: - Low Profile, Stylish, Not as bulky compared to other high-end routers.- Friendly and Intuitive UI.- Lots of customization options in the UI.- Router is concurrent. Able to dual broadcast 2.4ghz & 5.0ghz. Comment:
I bought this router when it was on sale to replace my D-Link Gamer Lounge which ive had for over 6yrs. I currently run a high-end custom built gaming pc, 2 laptops, a Pivos Aios, an XBMC media player, a PS3, a Samsung phone/tablet and iPhone and an occasional LAN party. Since replacing my old router, the Asus RT-AC87U has improved my wireless connection. I had setup all non high bandwidth devices to my 2.4ghz and all high bandwidth especially my XBMC player connected to 5.0ghz. Wireless up/dl speed has increased considerably. Wifi connection has been consistent, no d/c on either band, no buffer issues when streaming online contents. - First time setup is thru wireless connection.- Router UI has tons of options from Parental Controls, Scheduler, Network Protection, Cloud etc..- Asus router can also use the customized Merlin FW for added bug fixes and customization.- The estimate measured size of the router is 9W x 11L x 1.5H (inch)- Paint is close to matte black. Doesn't leave fingerprints.I recommend this product to anyone who prefers style and function. Asus did a good job on this one. |
I bought this ASUS RT-AC87U router when I was finally fed up with the poor range and performance that my Bell FibreOP router had. I decided to pick this up and everything has changed. I can now use my internet while in my yard and down my street. There is no corner of my house without reception or bad enough performance to make videos buffer while streaming or make me wait for a webpage to load. Wireless AC is also awesome, especially when downloading large files, gaming on wifi or backing up to network drives. The fact that I can also hook up an external hard drive and use this essentially as a mini NAS is also awesome, and apple time machine support is great. I have nearly 20 devices on this router and have not had any issues with speed or dropping out whatsoever. I did find that the 5GHz (wireless ac) did not have as good range as the 2.4GHz network, which is inherent for 5GHz wireless but worth noting regardless. Setup is a breeze and this router gets you up and running within minutes. The ASUSWRT software on this is very intuitive and rich with useful features like AP mode as well as other features such as the built in antivirus and VPN support. The list of features goes on and they are all incredibly useful and well thought out. The fact that I can grab another router from the ASUS lineup and use it as a range extender is also very nice. All in all, this router is incredibly solid, being aesthetically pleasing while also delivering insane performance over wireless and also being very user-friendly.
