Cons:

Everything. The error messages from 'Doctor Surf' are cryptic, it will not connect to Shaw / Motorola Surfboard modems. -Any- minor change you make to the admin page requires a lengthly restart of the router.

This is my actual RMA request to ASUS. If it was possible to give negative star-ratings, I would do it. I would sell my soul to give this a negative-star review.This product has given me problems since day 1. It took days to get it to work, and prayed to god that I'd never have to tweak the settings, or I'd have to go through hell again. Well, I had to open up a port on the router. The moment i hit the admin page, I had "Dr. Surf" tell me that I have the wrong dynamic or Static IP set (though I've never touched it, and it should be getting those settings automatically from my ISP). I even tried to force the correct settings, but alas, Dr. Surf tells me that I'm retarded and I don't know what I'm doing.This is the worst product I've ever used in my entire career in the software industry. I literally cannot find the words to tell you how dissatisfied I am with this product, or the fact that there is no toll-free help number available so that I can drag a poor tech support person down to hell with me in trying to solve these problems. Please, in the name of all that is holy, give me a completely different product that functions correctly. I'd prefer if it was another wireless networking product with Wireless-N capabilities, but at this point, I'd be satisfied if you sent me a paperclip.Please let me know what else I can do to get this horrible product off my desk. Thanks. |

It is a good router. I used it as a repeater and my D-link DIR-615 as the base. They both fine. The weakness is the software is often laggy, but not a big deal. I recommended to buy two RT-N13U (s). One as the Repeater, one as the base. |

I bought one of these on sale as a cheap DD-WRT router. I've been using it a few days so far, and it's been pretty solid. I haven't tried using the USB feature yet, but in theory you can turn the device into a NAS when running DD-WRTOnly pity is that you can't replace the antenna with a better one since it is built in. |

I have never been as frustrated with a product as I have with this router! Super fast when it's connected but the problem is that it's a small miracle if it stays connected for over an hour. I constantly have to reboot it! I've used it with a Telus and a Shaw modem and it does the same thing and just gives me an error message that really doesn't even make sense. I have a feeling the problems could be heat related because it runs fine after 5 minutes of being turned off and it just smells hot. Should have only gave it 1 star. |

Considering the cheap price at the time, it was a great buy. I had originally hoped to upgrade the house's network to wireless N, in hopes to finally add the furthest machines to the network. However, the set up process was quite tiring; the main problem being the router would not recognize an ethernet input cable from the voIP modem. Even so, after a few workarounds, we finally got it working. I haven't had a chance to test the USB capability on the router yet, but the main issue to be to just be warned of possible set up problems. |

If you think the the slick new UI's "Dr. Surf" is going to save you, you're heading for a disappointment. The UI looks pretty at first glance, but it's just lipstick on a pig. The terminology is confusing and the explanations offered by the UI are laced with network jargon and are unhelpful. Simply changing the router's password had me scratching my head for a few minutes. Had to replace my D-Link because it couldn't support my new broadband connection. So I went to a cheap solution when looking for alternatives. My friend got one and convert the web interface for a Linux based DD-WRT for more stability.I did not convert to DD-WRT because I just need the basis for the moment, but so far, stable. The only problem I have is the USB Flash drives make crash the web UI, even with the latest firmware. The UI and advanced options are very friendly, but I wish I could pass the Dr emoticon. |

Considering the price of the RT-N13U and the feature set that is included you cannot go wrong with purchasing this wireless router. I have two, one is set-up as a wireless bridge and the other as a router; there is a convenient switch at the bottom that lets you choose between router, AP and repeater modes. The only option the router does not come with is a gigabit switch. There are a couple of problem areas, the accompanying documentation is pitiful and when intially connecting it to a cable modem you have to plug the cable modem out for a min and then connect the router and wait about 5mins before trying to configure it. If you want the best router in the market buy the Linksys WRT610N, but at a 1/3 to 1/6 of the price the RT-N13u is a reasonable compromise.*May soon be supported by DD-WRT in case you cannot stand the ASUS firmware* |

Unless u know networking well, stick to the basic setup. Wireless speed (MP4 file upload to NAS) increased from 1.2 MB/s - to 5.25 MB/s and no cut off's yet. My old D-Link 524 would've left me in the cold at least 2 times. Yikes! I have yet to try the FTP option for Bit Torrent downloads, but should be ok. Make sure u upgrade the firmware and download manager software.Worth every penny! |

This router was a good value for price on sale and with a rebate. The wireless range is what you expect for a 'N' router. The USB connection for a network printer or external hard drive (FTP) and the downloading independently are all great value as well.The only qualms I have, and for the price I'm not complaining, is that there is only 1 USB port so you have to choose between a network printer or external hard drive and can't use both features, and that the Ethernet connection isn't gigabit. Also it can take a bit of effort to configure it the way you want it. |

Terrible device, I have and run 7 different routers (Dlink, Linksys, TPlink and can set any of them up in 5 min or less. This piece of crap has kept me going for about 6 hours now if you actually get it to connect to the internet, enjoy it cause it wont last!!! Take an average of 40 minutes of fiddling to get 60 min or less of internet connectivity, start the process over again. Only reason I bought this was cause I couldn't get the Dlink that I wanted, my mistake for being impatient. Unfortunately I bought it locally due to needing it in a hurry, should have ordered anything else from here. DO NOT BUY THIS ROUTER PERIOD!!! |

Cons: too many to list, but I think most of them don't work. I got two and both didn't work (by exchanging the first one which had a wireless problem that they checked). It's very hard to set up, doesn't just work from plugging it in. If you follow the manual it will get you nowhere, because the manual doesn't help, steps in there don't work...Even if you get it to work it will randomly stop working requiring hours of set up again...

I very good router for the price. Usually routers with N are expensive but not this one. Very good thing for netbooks and laptop. User interface is heaven compared to D-Link, with a lot of options and even can be used as a repeater. Too bad there is no gigabyte lan. The design is very nice looking. |

I won't lie, I thought I was taking crazy pills. (I actually said this aloud) "Dr. Surf" kept saying, and I quote "You have set the wrong dynamic or static IP address for your RT-N13U." AH... But I didn't. Dr. Surf just wasn't playing nice.HOWEVER, I have had the same issue with other routers. I have found the problem to be two fold. One part Shaw's fault, one part Asus RT-N13U's fault.Every time I swap out a router I have issues obtaining an IP from Shaw. You have to unplug power from both the cable modem and the router. This is Shaw's fault. I think the modems don't like giving IP's to new MAC addresses. (this is a guess) SIT ON YOUR HANDS FOR A FULL 60 SECONDS. Unplugging the modem and waiting "flushes" any stored address. While you are sitting you can connect all your ethernet cables to the router and modem. Plug in power to the modem. WAIT until you have four solid green lights. Then plug in power to the RT-N13U. Now walk away from the computer and stay away for 5 minutes. No joke here, Dr Surf screws with your head. He'll give you the message I've indicated above even though the router has in fact obtained, or is in the process of obtaining a IP from the ISP. This is Asus's fault, thus -1 star.I would guess that there is a problem, perhaps a lag, between the WebUI and the router. But if you walk away, Dr. Surf won't syke you out.Its a good, cheap N router with a lot of functionality built in. Something which you DO NOT see in most other routers at this price point. It will do well while I wait for Dual Band routers to become more affordable and/or start performing better.Note: IP address problem existed with stock 1.0.0.9 & 9.0.1.3 Beta firmware. |

I took a gamble on this router as I needed a new wireless one and figured to go for something with N capability. After reading reviews here I was afraid it wouldn't work with Shaw and they were right. It didn't want to automatically find the IP. After playing around with it and updating the firmware I finally got it to work and setup nicely but it took a few hours. I thought I had gotten the print server to work and everything but I just tried it again today and now it doesn't work. So there are some kinks but I would probably buy it again because the price was too good to pass up considering the features. |

regardless of the negative comments flooded all over the internet I still bought this and was glad I did. Don't judge a product on reviews others leave; a lot of them probably didn't even set it up right or have previous problems with their network / internet / whatever. It took me 5 minutes to set this up- all I had to do is plug everything in and it works and has been using it flawlessly ever since.However I did wish the file server was better- it only offers very basic functionality. For the FTP server there are only 2 usernames available for user accounts: Admin and Family, and you can't add your own. Plus, if you choose to share an USB drive or something, via FTP, you can only set access rights to the entire drive, not to individual folders, nor you can edit the file contents even with the Admin account via FTP. |
As a SHAW internet customer, this RT-N13U is by far the most frustrating router I've ever used.Internet connection issues:The internet connection (getting an IP address) is hit-n-miss with this router. Just every time I did a reboot or some changes to the router the internet it will disconnect itself from Shaw. I have to manually unplug the power, reconnect it, and hope for the best. Usually it takes more then 3 power cycle in order to get it to work with Shaw cable modem again.The Bit Torrent / Download manager feature:This is the primary reason I bought this router, however the download manager program never worked properly with my desktop and my laptop. The Asus download manager would not connect to the router whatsoever. I read thru online help and other users recommendations and still can't get the program to connect to the router. update d firmware and the Asus utility software still does not fix this problem. And any update or changes to the router WILL disconnect you from SHAW.Lack of support from Asus:Seems to me the above major problems are very common among RT-N13U and RT-N16 routers. If you search Google and you will find lots of people having the same issue. I've checked the Asus support forms for help and there is not much to get. The only thing I saw is the new RT-N13U Rev. B, so go figure.FTP feature:It is a neat feature that actually works "openly". You do not have an option to set your FTP server (the USB disk you've connected to the router) to operate within your LAN only. As soon as you turn it on, it is OPEN to the internet and to the whole wide world 24/7. Since there is no option for me to use my FTP server internally, it defeats the purpose that I wanted it to be. And I don't like to have my FTP server open to the internet.DDNS features:This feature works. Not much to say. However when IP address changed by Shaw this router will not be able to update it's IP address and will remain that why until you physically unplug it's power cord. Reboot will not work.Other comments:There is an (Rev.RT-N13U. I guess Asus knew the problems and didn't bother to support this. The one I got is the original RT-N13U which is one sold by NCIX.This router has tendency to disconnect you from the internet for no reason. So pleas be aware. I would say the "Download feature & option" is false advertising since it does not work.Hard earned money wasted.Order ID cannot be located anywhere on the NCIX receipt, to select the "COMPLETELY UNSATISFACTORY".
