This unit is pretty decent spec wise, it has good support for alternate firmware. Haven't had any issues with multiple units thus far.

Cons: After about 2 years, stops working -- see summary

Pros: Excellent quality and reliable
Comment:
One of the most reliable routers I've owned in a long time -- until it stops turning on after about 2 years. The issue is a capacitor breakdown, specifically the 680uF 16V one. See http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/asus/rt-n16#fixing.bad.capacitors. Replacing that capacitor will fix the issue and you will have your excellent router back.

Cons: Older design nowNo AC networkGets a little hot

Pros: FastGood stock firmwareGuest network available
Comment:
I bought this due to its reputation for being extremely reliable - I was installing it at my parent's house which is a 3 hour drive away. It turns out they didn't need it so I instead installed it at my home to replace a Trendnet router. I like it a lot. I am using the stock firmware and it does everything I need including putting a time restriction for when the internet is available to my kid. The only downside is that it gets a bit warm in the cabinet it is installed in and that it isn't "futureproof" because it is not 802.11AC compatible. I recommend if you are looking for an N router though.

Cons: USB ports can't power external drives. quality control is hit or miss

Pros: Lots of features
Comment:
This router died on me after about 6 months of usage. I ended up having to open the whole thing up and replace and solder on a different capacitor to get it to work again. Apparently this has happened to many others as well. Other than that, once I fixed it, its worked just fine. The stock firmware is full of features that I don't have to flash it with a custom rom or anything. Great buy if you can do some very minor soldering work.

Cons: Power supply is cheap

Pros: Tomato/DD-WRT supportVery good specs (500MHZ, 128MB RAM, 32MB Flash)All Gigabit
Comment:
So I got this router few years ago (about 3 1/2 years) to install DD-WRT or Tomato on it. I tried both firmwares and decided to stick with Tomato. I never ran on the stock Asus firmware, so I can't comment on it. However, I will not comment on how good the open source firmwares are, but you should give them a go.The specs of this router are very good. With 128MB of RAM, 500MHZ of CPU and a 32MB Flash, you can have a lot of stuff running on this firmware. Having USB ports is nice, you can use this router as a NAS, download station and even media streamer. The WIFI signal is good/great, although not spectacular. I'm sure there are other better routers, but it does the job for me. It also has all Gigabit ports, which leverage my network to a Gig network. Today, it is a more common, but 3-4 years ago, it wasn't the standard yet.The only negative point I would give to this router is the power supply. If you want to use USB and use a USB powered drive, use a lot of its CPU ressources, you will need to change the power supply. The bundled power supply does not have many amps, and when you crank the router, it will suffer and reboot on its own. A good power supply is a Sony Playstation Portable power supply. It is the same voltage, same plug but more amps.Overall, it is a must buy. I haven't done my researches to check if there are better alternatives today, but I won't change it anytime soon. It is still as good as it was when I bought it !

Cons: - Issue tracking internet usage (latest ASUS firmware issue?)

Pros: - DD-WRT available for this router- Realtime connection monitoring- Good factory firmware interface- 2x USB for storage or printer- Main WiFi network + Guest WiFi network (each having seperate SSID and password)
Comment:
Overall I like this router. Easy configuration and you can set up two seperate WiFi network on this router : your own where your computers and other personal device can connect to and another you can use for your friends and others guests when they pop in and that second guest network only allow internet access. Your computers and shared data are protected if accessed by the guest network. Each has their own SSID and password. USB ports also allow maximum network storage with USB storage device or printer server. For gaming purpose, GIGABIT ports are very handy to ensure maximum bandwidth and reliability. And it's a nice looking router with blue led inside. :)

This router has superb speed and quality. The stock firmware is wonderful contrary to other customers testimonials. I am studying to turn out to be a network tech and this router has plenty of advanced characteristics. It has an open NAT for you console gamers and DMZ if you are possessing any troubles with NAT. I try dd-wrt on this router and if the stock firmware isn't advanced enough for you dd-wrt is simple and speedy to flash. The two usb 2. ports are particularly handy. I am utilizing a single to connect my external seagate HDD for a NAS and wireless backup. The wireless speed is unbelievable compared to G. While my speed only maxes out at 144mbps even although it and my nic card are rated at 300mbps, but 144 is still 3x more quickly. I can watch youtube vids on 720p with no buffer time. Super quickly CPU and tons of ram and flash storage. I flashed it to dd-wrt but I could not locate out how to get the usb to act as a NAS. The stock firmware would regognize the HDD but it took a even though for my backup computer software to recognize the wireless HDD. The usb requirements some refining. The signal strength is not as a lot as I was hoping for N but it is nevertheless great. Have had the router for about two months. Extremely content with this router. Worth the 贄 I paid, and realizing what it is I would spend 贶+. Asus's tech support is 100% US primarily based, friendly and really knowledgeable. The 1 tech I talked to had a certification in IT security, so they arn't just some idiot who appears in a book for all of the ansers like most tech assistance. Their assistance (and newegg) must be the role model for every single other corporation.

Purchased a single for Mother-in-law who wanted to print to USB printer(s) wirelessly (price at the time was 60 immediately after rebate). She's had it for 1 year nowAdore it so substantially that I bought one particular for myself, price was about 70ish with rebate. Installed Tomato for myself and the beast by no means stops. I use tons of port forwarding for a private SVN server, media server, and apache webserver. No problems at all. I've had mine for six months.I've had lan parties exactly where we've had all four LAN ports applied plus 3 more clients on wireless and we all played SC2 devoid of drops, latency, or timeouts. You genuinely want to use DD-WRT or Tomato. The ASUS firmware is SO poor it isn't even funny. For an average user who doesn't want to flash the firmware stay away. The UI and behavior on the default ASUS firmware was so negative. I was curios and lacked time to get tomato on it so I ran it for a week. For the duration of the week I had continuous dropouts, firmware UI freezes, and basic flakiness. I read the ASUS firmware was buggy but didn't feel it was this bad. What ever, installed Tomato that weekend and have been blown away. If you are comfortable installing Tomato/DD-WRT purchase it. ๪ N16 + DD-WRT/Tomato = 跌 cisco/linksys router

Flashed it to asus 1019 firmware right out of the box and it wouldnt hold a connection for additional than a minute. Tried challenging to resolve this situation but nothing at all worked. I could access the router fine but no net notta.Flashed it to the most up-to-date tomato usb firmware and bingo everything performs fantastic. Hooked up an external hdd and no troubles study/write from the networked computer's.Plays effectively with a linksys (dd-wrt bridge) router that is on the network also. Purchased it due to the fact of the usb ports and the low price tag most of the devices on my network are wireless-g.

Great speed and no dropped connections, even although five walls.External USB difficult drive access on Windows is as uncomplicated as \\RT-N16. Connection speed varies from minute to minute. My HP laptop has a Broadcom 4313 adapter and my Dell laptop has an Intel WiFi Link 5300 AGN adapter. HP = 39 to 72 Mbps. Dell = 78 to 130 Mbps. By contrast, an external TP-Hyperlink USB adapter is constantly 65 Mbps.Installing TomatoUSB and DD-WRT didn't impact connection speed behaviors (even when boosting Tx power). I ended up utilizing the stock firmware.Firmware GUI is odd plus, in the back of your mind, you just -know- that installing TomatoUSB or DD-WRT would expose several far more functions and settings. I have two wireless networks in every day service. The other router is ancient LinkSys WRT-54GL (with DD-WRT and 100 mW Tx). inSSIDer two. reports the RT-N16 routers broadcasting a quite slightly greater signal amplitude. The LinkSys router usually transmits 54 Mbps, but interference (visible w/inSSIDer) can often drop it to ㅠ Mbps.

Great up-time Froze up a couple of occasionsRuns open-source firmware I installed Tomato firmware from the begin, so I by no means dealt with the stock firmware. This router stays up for weeks at a time (perhaps months; we'll see), in contrast to my preceding router, which necessary resets just about every other day. The unit has frozen twice when I was downloading gigs of information, but I haven't observed it do that given that. Heavy information downloading is unusual for me, so I can't be certain if the unit will freeze usually when doing so. I haven't utilized the USB drive function yet, so can't speak to that.

Seeking at the specs alone, this point is wonderful. I've noticed a Massive improvement over my old Linksys router that not too long ago crapped out. My home has numerous PS3/XBOX 360 units on this by means of wireless, three desktops wired, two laptops wireless, plus iPod devices, phones, etc. all operating via this point. Given that my upgrade (see below) I've under no circumstances had to reboot this device. With the amount of devices I have hooked into this thing, and continual stream of information (both internally and up/down via our cable modem), speeds and functionality have constantly been constant. The ASUS stock firmware/software is really, seriously terrible. I ran it for about a week ahead of I got fed up with continuous reboots, dropped WiFi connections, and so on. I ultimately put DD-WRT on it and because then it's been nothing but amazing. I very recommend users "upgrade" to DD-WRT on this device (don't overlook to modify the default username/passwords!). DD-WRT opens up a lot of characteristics that otherwise are lacking from this device stock out of the box. Do a Google search for "RT-N16 DD-WRT" and comply with the Wiki for a speedy and straightforward upgrade.

Good hardware to install TomatoUSB, Toastman, RAF, MLPPP, DD-WRT, and so forth. If you are unsure what all this is then just google it and read. You will be amazed. You can turn this 95 dollar router in to a powerhouse worth a whole lot more. It has been operating rock strong for practically a week now. Wonderful throughput on the WAN and LAN. Stock ASUS firmware was not very good in my opinion and incredibly unstable. I attempted it just to verify it out even knowing I was going to set up TomatoUSB VPN toastmans newest release with RAF added features. The wireless strength and speed could be better but it is nevertheless decently excellent. Also not a major fan of the case colour but who cares suitable. I like the blue lights but can be vibrant for some persons. What's on the inside and how nicely it performs is what counts. 480mhz Broadcom MIPS2 cpu, 128mb memory and 32mb flash memory. two USB ports and WPS button can be reassigned to do what you want. I have mine set at Toastman's default of toggling the wireless radio on and off. This is my favored pre-built router I have ever owned so far. I have had and attempted numerous routers. I have custom built routers I have built also which I have attempted just about every flavor of router OS there is offered.

The initial one particular was DOA, I spend extra พ to ship it back for a replacement.

Got the router and quickly installed DD-WRT. This is my 4th router soon after obtaining so a lot of troubles with other brands disconnecting my Cisco VPN sessions from work or hangs. This one has been solid for the final three months - no far more VPN session drops. On top of that, the USB port allow me to setup a Samba network share to a 1.five TB USB drive to be employed as a central fileserver with no needing a computer system. The other USB port serves as a printer server for common printing from any laptop in the house regardless of OS, I run all versions of Windows and Ubuntu. Those two possibilities alone have greatly added worth to the router. If you have additional time, install Optware and now can also do bittorrent and a bunch of security capabilities (yeah, I've blocked chosen asian countr from hitting my router). Add OpenDNS to set up a network wide content filtering to block bad contents from obtaining to my little ones' computer systems. This router has the horsepowr of a computer to do all this - ideal acquire I've spent Some feature of DD-WRT didn't perform (yet) such as UPnP server selection for video streaming but it's almost certainly just me. It did need a bit of technical perform getting it all working with DD-WRT with all the possibilities mentioned. It rocks! Don't hesitate and get it.
