Cons: Touch pad is huge and interferes with typing. It's totally occupying the palm rest area when you're typing, it's really silly and a major design flaw. I've never used the disable touchpad function on a laptop in like a decade until this day. Sure enough, I have to ditch the touchpad and just use the touch screen instead. If that's not bad enough, about 90% of the touchpad is part of the left and right click. Also causes right clicks to be interrupted immediately with a left click because there is not enough flex in the touchpad. It causes both sides to be clicked at the same time.- Christmas time I bought an Asus S46CA and it would keep crashing and stuck in an endless loop to recovery mode. Ended up returning it because after a restore, it would happen again, 2 more times. The same thing happened to this S400CA, I think there's a problem with the Asus factory images. After re-installing a clean and proper install of Win 8 with UEFI/GPT, it never crashed again.- Requires mini mSATA which is hard to source right now. Standard size mSATA would fit, except you'd have to modify the cover panel to remove obstacles in order to close back up.

Pros: - Was on sale for $499 which is very reasonable- Touch screen makes all the difference for Windows 8. If you try to keep an open mind, Windows 8 really isn't all that bad. The touch experience makes it enjoyable and a nice change of pace.- This unit doesn't come with a mSATA SSD cache, but you can always pick one up later but must be mini mSATA which is half the height of a regular mSATA SSD in order to fit. If it's large enough you can re-install Windows 8 on it altogether and use the 2.5" hard drive just as storage.- AC Adapter is not too big, square, about the width of a 2.5" drive.- Easy to upgrade
Comment:
Excellent value when on sale at $499 like it was here at NCIX. Touch screen is indispensable. Touchpad mouse is an epic design/functional fail. Factory image prone to endless crash loop requiring a restore or clean install. Easily upgradable as the entire bottom panel is removed for access to mini-pcie, so-dimm, hdd, and mini mSATA.Since it's in an ultrabook chassis, you'll need a 7mm 2.5" drive. Standard height 9.5mm drives will not fit. mSATA slot teases you with what looks like room to install a regular mSATA SSD, but only actually fits mini mSATA.

Cons: None for Windows use, Linux has wireless problems

Pros: Well built, cool and quiet running, inexpensive
Comment:
The touch screen works well, and eases the pain of using Windows 8. i3 processor seems to be perfectly OK for routine use. If I wanted more speed, I would add an SSD rather than go to the same machine with an i5 processor.I am impressed with the machine's solid feel and the fact that it runs very cool and has virtually no fan noise. The machine comes with a 2 year warranty - my unit had a minor keyboard problem, which was fixed by ASUS in Ontario with a 1 day repair depot turnaround. ASUS also offers free 1 year accidental damage coverage - this might be important for parents buying for a teen.Ubuntu 13.04 runs well, but as of May 2013 there is a bug with the wireless driver which renders the wireless useless (Ubuntu bug #1160188). The problem is in the kernel, and other Linux distributions have the same problem. Other computers with the same wireless adapter have problems no matter which Linux distribution is used. When the lid is closed, Ubuntu does not suspend reliably.
