Cons: No colour codeNo way to play sound out of all speakers

Pros: Sturdy and well built

So I got these as a gift from my girlfriend when my home theater system broke. The reviews here are pretty well detailed so I will provide a basic summary of the pros and cons.Pros:- Sturdy construction- Huge sub woofer- Clear sound- Nice remote and nice wired controllerCons:- Difficult setup (lack of colour co-ordination or any labelling on wires makes it difficult to connect properly)- Wired remote has short cable: could not place it where I want it and obviously due to the unique connector I could not buy an "extension"- No way to play sound out of all speakers. My logitech had an option called "matrix" which would allow sound to play out of all speakers even if the output was 2.1. Can't find this feature on my Edifier.

Cons: Should have optical input and only one more feature which logitech z5500 have,it converts 2.1 to 5.1 other wise perfect system.

Pros: These speakers have Superb sound and build quality.
Comment:
I bought logitech z906 they were alright. they used to sound horrible when i used to turn volume all the way up. Then i came across this excellent system, no system can beat this one in this price range.

Cons: Worse than a full fledged receiver + speaker setupOnly takes analog inputs.

Pros: Great SoundRelatively compactReasonable price
Comment:
Great set, only thing that would make it better would the integration of a DAC so you could simply pipe a digital output to the set.

Cons: Very Heavy. Make sure you get someone to help you load and unload them or you might wreck your back. No digital input, but 5.1 channel analog always sounds better as long as the audio source is able to output in 5.1 analog out.

Pros: Absolutely amazing sound quality. These things don't sound like dinky PC speakers. They can hold their own against my poly audio/Yamaho Home Theater system. Don't let the 280 watts RMS fool you. The sub is plenty powerful with the passive radiators, and the sattellites sound great with their 2 way design which include tweeters (unlike logitech's). Very high quality consctruction with the all wood construction of the speaker housing. I had the Logitech Z-5500's before this and was tired of the constant thumping bass. There was nothing else but bass from that system. These speakers wipe the floor with them. Also, do yourself a favor and pick up a good soundcard for these speakers, they will sound so much better.

Amazing Quality, Amazing sound quality, Best PC speakers I've ever heard.

Cons: The subwoofer is tuned specifically so that anything below 40hz is very quiet.

Pros: Great build quality! These speakers aren't like the ones from other companies that are made of plastic most of the time.Bass is excellent, loud and deep and fills the room! The control pod is a nice feature allowing you to control the individual speaker's volume level.

Great stuff. Best 5.1 computer speakers to date.

Cons: Sub is rather ugly and huge, which is not a problem for mefront and center speakers wires are a bit too short, but you can always buy a roll since it's standard speaker cablesColor coding doesn't fit with standard soundcards color codes

Pros: The satellites speakers are very beautifulThe paint used on the speakers is high qualityFeels very solidNo scratch, no bump, no nothing wrong on the finishWired controller is handyThe low frequencies are well rendered by the satellitesThe speakers are big and deep, which is a problem for some but a huge plus for meThe sound, explained in summary

When I came back home I had the surprise of seeing this system in the garage, shipment took only 3 days which I guess is very good for ground shipping. I was very excited because I had the feeling I did buy something special.First the look of the whole system in general is awesome, looks rock solid, no flaws, all quality materials (if this ever is the good word in English). When you touch at the speakers paint it almost feel like metal coated, they are cold. But the paint is very beautiful, you can't see it on the picture because it's subtle. The sub is plan ugly but seems to be very high quality, though you have to be careful not to break the side thingys. The satellites are just awesome in every aspect, the center speaker is so great and very big for a pc speaker. For some it's a problem, but if you don't mind the space it takes you won't regret it, it's solid, the casing is very solid and thick and they are capable of rendering high quality sound without weird plastic noise.I haven't tested the system to the limit but they can go loud enough, beyond that is not recommended for your ears anyway ! Overall sound quality is top-notch and I have nothing wrong to sayJust be careful for one thing, though it's unrelated to Edifier, it's related to 5.1 speakers with Vista and Windows 7. If you intend to hear every speaker playing with music, it simply won't work unless you tweak it, I'm still trying to figure out how to make the rear speakers work properly, but at least I got center and subwoofer working. Finally, I would buy again anytime, simply the best piece of hardware I've owned in my life.

Cons: no digital inputs

Pros: Great sounding speakersvery well builtlooks nice

I've had the Z5500 and did a direct compare with these new s550's. These edifiers blow the z5500's out of the water in every way. The real only problem I can find is the lack of a digital input and just the over all size of the whole system is kinda big. iMO I don't need the digital inputs as it's a pc only system. Also the size is ok with my but some may find it to big.Build quality is great and the system looks pleasing. If/when the s750's actually come out, I will be first in line.

Cons: Shipping weightCan be awkward to hook uplack of digital hook ups

Pros: great soundcable length for rear speakerscorded and cordless remotes
Comment:
Honestly these are the best sounding computer speakers I've ever owned, they connect to the subwoofer with speaker wire instead of those annoying RCA cables. The speaker wire included with the rear speakers is enough to actually use them as rear or side, depending on how you want your 5.1 set up.The combination of corded and cordless remotes is great, especially when watching a movie on a TV or just chilling listening to music.Honestly though, with a shipping weight of 88 pounds, shipping is pricey, cheapest shipping rate to where I live was 65 bucks, it's best to wait until NCIX has a deal on shipping to order these. Hookup to the computer can be a bit awkward, it goes from 6 RCA cables to 3 computer jacks that aren't color coded properly but I guess color coding doesn't really matter when you could use green for the rear if you really want to, but familiar colors would be nice. The lack of digital hookups is probably the only real disappointing feature of these speakers, making them pretty much computer only, otherwise they would be excellent for a home theater setup as well.

Cons: Arrived cosmetically damaged, not enough to RMA but minor annoyance.

Pros: Study, wooden casings, gigantic sub wooferAmazing soundSuperb bass
Comment:
What a superb systemEverything shakes.Brings a new meaning to bringing down the house, any louder and the roof will fall.Purchased these as a replacement of my 5.1 Logitech X-540s (old I know, they recently broke), I originally thought that subwoofer was good, but this, this is beyond.Nothing but clear crisp and ear-deafening sound coming out of all 5 speakers and the subwoofer.Price is a little on the high side, considering you can buy a receiver + speakers for around the same amount, but if you're looking for a hassle free all-in-one system, look no further, the Z5500 has nothing on this.

Cons: Don't try turning the volume to max. Very sensitive and will break easily.

Pros: VERY high quality sound. Center speaker works well for voice, front speaker and rear speakers work great for ambience.

Better for movies than for gaming, but works well for both.

Cons: - speaker wire to small- sometimes the remote does not work- it's heavy so make sure to buy when shipping is free !

Pros: - great sound on all frequencies- MDF enclosures, no cheap plastic- comes with cables to connect the 3.5mm jacks of a PC to the RCA inputs of the speaker kit- Subwoofer magnetically shielded
Comment:
That's a great speaker kit. I wanted to change my Logitech Z-5300 speakers. I tried the Logitech Z-5500 but the subwoofer sound was too dry and overpowering compared to the speakers. I like the Edifier S550 much better. The bass is richer and it seems like the mid ranges are better too. Also, it's one of the few speaker kits I could find where the subwoofer is magnetically shielded. That's important for me since the subwoofer is near my PC and I did not want the magnetic field of the subwoofer to screw up my hard drives.I found only 2 small problems:1- The IR reciever on the wired remote seems to have problems, sometimes it's slow to react with either the original remote or my Logitech Harmony. I think I'll contact Edifier about that, maybe it's defective.2- The speaker wire that comes with the kit is way too small. It looks like AWG18 or 20. I bought some AWG14 wires. I don't know if it will make a big difference but since the speakers are all 8 ohms, I did not want to tyake any chances

Cons: -No way to run AUX and 5.1 at the same time-Needs some tweaking to the sub settings.-Seems to have better bass in its 2.1 setting.-Control pod should be as long as the audio cables at least.

Pros: +Sounds great(with some tweaking)+Edifier is what AltecLansing used to be.+The remote is a nice touch
Comment:
This system is a very mixed bag. General.I am coming from my old select  641(Had them since release) from Alteclansing. So its what i have to compare to(and trust me, those thing where great, but one sub amp has started to give out). This new system sounds great but will not go as loud as many others(My old select  641 are a fair bit louder, that is nice for movie viewing). This is generally not an issue as most others that go louder distort and this set does not. The Sub. The sub seems to be tuned a bit strange some notes just to not jump out(acoustic bass in the song rock around the clock was extremely deep and rich before) like they did on my last system. With some slight tweaking on my sound card(about a 3db bass boost and a slight increase to the satellite volumes) it sounds much better to me. This tweaking is only needed because I generally listen to music at quieter(The old system auto adjusted the bass at different volumes for optimal sound) levels at louder levels the sub picks up steam. The Satellites.I almost can not say enough about how great the satellites sound even at loud volumes, this is something very few computer speakers can match. They are just clean sounding and very low on distortion. The satellites have one downfall, they do not seem to send sound in as wide of a path as my old ones(only an issue if you are above/below at a fairly steep angle). What I like.I do like the clear sound.Games are just amazing on these things(5.1 vs 4.1).The control pod is very easy to use.The remote is a nice add-on.Passive radiators give off a nice sound(I have used such systems before) and with them on each side this sub has less dead spaces(strange spaces with very little bass) for the listener. What I think needs work. The sub needs tweaking at lower volumes(make it a bit louder). At those volumes it does not seems to be doing much at all unless you listen to dance music. The control pod and rear speakers could use longer cables(mostly the control pod)A line-in that is always active over the 5.1/2.1 input would be very nice, now I have to build a summing box(active) so both computer can play together right. I took this for granted with my old system.Even a basic Stereo X2 up mix for stereo input would also be nice.If one is looking for absolute volume, this will not be for them. Passive radiators are less efficient(takes more power to make the same amount of sound) and will be quieter and slightly less punchy then a ported sub. What I do not like.I think it needs a bit more power. My old set is a good bit louder(even with this at boost 6). This is only needed for more movie enjoyment. As long as you do not use Dolby "quiet environment" you should be OK. But I have not got to watch too many movies, so far, despite the small subs on my last system(dual 6.5 inch with dual extra long ports), it shook the room a fair bit more.Final thoughts (The only part you need to read :P)This system is for those who want quality over loudnessIt sounds better with a few tweaks and careful sub placement. The satellites are simply top notch for computer speakers(Its no KEF set). This system has 2 inputs, but they can only be used one at a time. There is NO UP MIXING FOR STEREO.Would I buy it again? YES, I listen to music allot and want it to sound good.

Cons: Should be louder. might be sound cards fault.

Pros: Tight bass, clear highs
Comment:
I am very impressed by these speakers. no matter how high the volume goes they do not distort. sound quality is good and bass is clear and tight. the lack of digital input is not a problem because they will only be connected to my pc.I would recommend these speakers to anyone that is looking for a good 5.1 setup.
