Comment:
Finally, I think I've found my ideal heatsink.I upgraded from a Zalman CNPS 5x to this. The groany fan on the Zalman was driving me crazy, plus the fact that it resonated like a guitar string when the fan ramped up.Everyone recommends the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo and that's what I wanted to upgrade to. However I read some negative comments concerning the CM's fan noise. Easily solved by replacing the fan with a Noctua, but the combination price was about $10 higher than this Scythe. The Scythe is very well-reviewed in terms of both the noise of its fan and its cooling ability. I decided to get a heatsink with a quiet fan out-of-the-box rather than the more expensive CM + Noctua combo.I was not disappointed! Installation was an absolute joy - it's very easy and very secure. The only trouble I had with installation was the fan clips - it's tricky to figure out how to position them at first and then once you've figured this out, getting both the bottom and top clips in place simultaneously is hard.It would be easier to install the fan with the heatsink off the CPU but there's a big issue here, probably the largest weakness of this heatsink - it WILL interfere with your RAM. On my Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3, the fan is well over DIMM slot 1 and ends over slot 2. It may even interfere with RAM with high heatspreaders in slot 3! So it's best to install the RAM first and the fan later so you can push it up over your RAM. It will accommodate standard-height RAM but you won't be able to use RAM with tall heatspreaders. You might be able to work around it as the fan can be pushed up, plus slot 1 sits between the wider flanges at each end of the fan, but you won't have much room for sure.RAM issues aside, the rest of the heatsink is perfect. The base is a very smooth mirror finish, extremely well-polished and slightly convex - this ensures excellent contact right at the centre of the CPU heatspreader. It's quite large yet not all that heavy because the metal of the fins is so thin. This is good because it eases strain on the motherboard but it makes the fins very fragile - be prepared to bend them straight before and after installation. The most important thing for me is that the large fan is QUIET! My board spins it at 675 RPM on idle, 900 RPM on full load. It's just barely audible at these speeds, little difference from idle to load, and doesn't exhibit the constant ramping up/down noise the Zalman used to. Finally. It performs extremely well at cooling too. My Zalman would cause the CPU to idle at 30 C with its noisy fan at 1900 RPM. Loaded with Prime95 it stabilized at 51 - 52 C with the fan at 2200 RPM. The room temp was 20 C, this is a delta of 31 - 32 C. This Scythe causes the CPU to idle at 25 C with the fan at 675 RPM. At load it stabilizes at 42 C with the fan at 890 RPM - this is a delta of 22 C. Keep in mind this is with the included thermal paste, brand new. I'll be changing my CPU shortly and using Arctic Silver 5 so I expect it will improve further.Despite the RAM issue, this heatsink is so quiet and cools so well I've stopped looking for a better heatsink.
