Really, low power consumption, cable-significantly less, powerful building, drives spin down if not in use demands port multiplier - wont just plug in to a eSATA port on a laptop

This is a good tiny case and seems to be strong. I purchased it with five Hitachi drives and connected it straight to a SATA port on a ASUS M4A785-M motherboard configured to use AHCI for SATA, and Solaris Nevada 160 identified all of the drives and was satisfied to make and populate a ZFS raid pool from them. I'm seeing about 80Mb/sec, not stellar but fine, and it does appear to be strong. I have not used the Rocket Raid card except for a short sanity verify with Windows Vista on a different box. The rails and sleds aren't particularly robust, so take it slow. Major storage in a nice format with a single cable - what's not to like? Until USB 3. is far more prevalent and afforable, this is very good.

Loaded this unit up with 5ƦTB drives in a RAID 5 configuration. Also bought the Higher Point 2314 RAID card, instead of using the bundled one. Took about six hours to initialize the drives into my necessary configuration. Functions a treat. Sucks up power like practically nothing. But that could be down to the person challenging drives. Noisy bugger also.

All round a excellent create quality and sturdy construction. The included RAID card was a little troublesome at very first for WHS, but as soon as I manually located the driver on the included cd, all was fantastic. This solution was greater than anticipated at this value point and if I have been to do it again, I may pop for the 8 drive version for a small far more $. If you know how to setup your RAID without enable, you are great to go, since documentation was non-existent.One point I did notice is you Cannot initialize a drive from inside the localhost config menu, so when you add a NEW drive this requires a reboot to name the drive or array, etc. After this is carried out, you can configure the RAID or array or drive from inside the GUI. Nice product, a few updates and tweaks are required, but general....fantastic!

-five bays-simple to install on trays-Fairly compact unit -Fan is somewhat noisy-installation/setup of RAID is a bit confusing for a novice RAID'er. The integrated instructions are definitely terrible at providing any sort of detail. Net interface is ok, but once again how about a little additional description on all the settings.I was able to set up & initialize RAID five with 5 x 2TB WD green drives. This took several hours, which is fine. But when I started transferring files from my old drive, I was finding around 1 mb/sec speeds which is certainly unacceptable. Emailed & named tech support, a week later all they can tell me is its since of my green drives. What a crock. I know they're slow, but c'mon, not that slow.I unplugged the esata cable and checked the PCIe card to make positive anything was hooked up ok, then got the vibrant thought to swap the cable to the other esata port on the card (theres 2 so you could theoretically hook up 2 towers on 1 card). Whammy! Positive adequate, I'm receiving decent speeds of ㅴ/sec which aint good, but it's accepta Don't count on tech support to be any enable. They are worthless. The 10tb worth of drives came out to be 7.27TB as soon as RAID 5 was set up and formatted.esata & power cord could be longer Manufacturer Response:Thank you for acquiring our product. None as of but. The kind letter response posted beneath my initial review is a additional insult as I had a lengthy phone contact with two representatives at Sans Digital. They are extremely aware that harm was not shipping related but poorly manufactured. As a retired tool & die maker, I am incredibly capable of creating that assessment. Passing the buck to shippers or Newegg is unfortunate as neither had been responsible for putting this factor in a box to be sold.

Good strong make quality of the device. Very straightforward setup and decent guidelines for the less tech savy. Nice internet configuration interface that can do it all. Had it up and operating and waiting on the RAID to be initialized in about 15 mins. None so far. Other than getting to wait about 12 hours for the RAID to initialize, but it isn't this devices fault :) I place three - 2TB drives in her and went with RAID5 for some level of failure recovery. Will fill it up later on, as the 4TB of space will be a lot more than sufficient for about yet another 18 months or so for me.

Price is OK. Noise level OK. 1) Take additional than three days to initialize the 10TB RAID five drive ƕ WDC 2TB drives.) In fact the incredibly first time I attempted it took a lot more than 5 days! This is on a Dell Optiplex 960 program.2) The driver compiled and loaded fine (on RHEL five.6). I can talk to the RAID box and get some fundamental details (such as HD's model and Serial numbers.) But when I tested produced a 2TB stuff (by untaring a major file), the method panic'ed at about 25GB done. Want they have a new firmware that can utilize the new 4K block size drives; i.e., properly aligns the virtual disks with the HD's block boundary. Manufacturer Response:Thank you for acquiring our item. It typically take about 1 day to initialize the RAID 5 with 5 drives. Please make positive it is under foreground initialization when undertaking the CLI command. Foreground will dedicate all processing power to initialize but you can\'t use the RAID proper away. Background enable disk usage ahead of initialization, but it take longer time. Please give more detail about the panic due to the fact REDHAT is supported. - Extremely straightforward plug & play with an HP MediaSmart EX 495 Server.- Good drive indicator lights on front.- Fantastic tech assistance. - Drive trays feel low cost subsequent to the EX 495's seriously good screwless design and style.- Annoyingly noisy. I would give this five stars, except for the noise. The massive fan for the drives is fine (typical white noise), but the power provide fan is HORRIBLE. I essentially returned the first 1 I had mainly because it was so poor: I called the business and asked if this was standard, they said no and to return it, so I did. When I plugged in the new a single, I was relieved that it was significantly quieter and all I heard was the fine. Nonetheless immediately after operating for an hour or so, the new unit increasingly has the identical energy provide fan noise like the 1st a single. Ultimately I don't consider it will be any various. The volume of the noise isn't so much the problem, as it getting this genuinely annoying somewhat higher whine. I am sitting next to it now and it is increasingly driving me crazy. This is just not anything you can have close to your desk mainly because of it. I'll will need to either uncover a closet for it, replace the power provide fan, or return it.

Got my 6TB RAID 5 ƕ x 1.5TB) up and running. Internet GUI looks dated, but delivers you with a lot of good facts and alternatives. Extended POST. Seemed to conflict with my motherboard's CMOS a lot. Read Other Thoughts for my solution. Slow create speeds so far, but the array is initializing and I anticipate greater speeds as soon as that is complete. Oh, extended initialization. In all probability mainly because of the six TB although! Can't fault the unit for that. The native monitoring app does not see my RAID. The Web GUI appears superior anyways. If you have difficulty booting off a separate disk, or if your CMOS appears to get corrupted soon after this device POSTS, read this. Essentially, if you're not booting from this device, and you're possessing issues, try this. Do not use the following methods if you're creating a RAID that you'd like to boot from.1. Download the HP Format Utility (Google it).2. Get a USB flash drive and make a DOS Startup Disk utilizing the HP Utility.three. When it performs, you've got very good transfer speeds. Too undesirable it's got significant problems. This unit as nicely as the smaller sized unit (TR4M) both have an problem exactly where a consistent write causes the unit to fail and enter an initialization loop. The only remedy is to absolutely shutdown the unit and restart it.The TR5M is connected to the replicator ports on an HP EX490 Mediasmart Windows Household Server. When the TR5M fails, the Residence Server should be power cycled along with the TR5M for the TR5M to resume functioning adequately. Obviously, getting a backup server routinely losing access to disks is unnacceptable.Customer service has never ever responded to emails sent with regards to the issue. Great expansion storage. The device accommodates five drives. I purchased this unit for my backup system working with 2TB western digital green drives. It is not the fastest disk array around, but for my backup technique, where data just desires to trickle to the disks, it is fine. The only gripe I have is that the Linux driver only operates with the 2.six.35 kernel that comes with Ubuntu. I could not get this driver to operate with a custom compiled kernel at two.six.37. It would bring about a kernel panic and freeze the system. So if you are using the stock kernel that comes with your distribution, it will function excellent. I suspect that future versions of this driver will work newer Linux kernels. So my fault for trying to be bleeding edge.

* The management interface seems to be in a position to get a lot of excellent details about the well being of the disks. * Initial configuration was fairly uncomplicated. * Managing the array is a discomfort on Windows. There's a internet-based front finish that you have to install on the computer the array is connected to, and it's definitely terrible. Each time I try to manage the disks, the management service crashes.* "Hot Swapping" is a joke - adding or removing a disk apparently reboots the complete array.* Occasionally, my Pc will just lose the capacity to get in touch with the array, even although the array thinks it's working fine (judging by the lights on the front). I have to reboot the Computer to get connectivity back. I purchased this device to be a storage array for my house server operating Windows Server 2008 R2, but it's just also unreliable. I've installed the newest drivers from the HighPoint Technologies web page, as properly as the latest version of the internet frontend, and nothing has gotten better. Quite simple to install, drives slide in nicely by way of supplied caddy / rails. Presently I only have three 2TB drives in right here, but so far so excellent. RAID setup was far more or less straightforward. Had a bit of a challenging time getting drivers for Ubuntu - had to hunt about a small bit, would've been good if they supplied the sources on the included CD. Also, if you aren't running a version of linux they have a compiled driver for, you'll be compiling it yourself. Not a huge deal, just annoying. The only other issue I had was with the built in BIOS manage - I couldn't get the raid array to initialize till I installed the hptsvr application and initialized it via the internet interface. If you're using this beneath ubuntu like I am, and you generate an array greater than 2TB, you'll want to use parted not fdisk to generate your partition, and make certain to modify the label from msdos to gpt - this will allow you to partition the complete disk rather of just the first 2TB.

I haven't had this lengthy enough to speak to long-term reliability, but I had zero difficulties with initial setup. Installed 3x 2TB drives in RAID 5, and everything is operating swimmingly. Internet-based management app is pretty straightforward, and documentation is decent besides. Haven't tested OCE but it looks to also be fairly straightforward. Bundled disc for controller card has Server 2008 and Win7 drivers, which is nice. Scheduled health inspections with e-mail notification on warnings/errors is incredibly nice. Significant fan keeps drives at ㆈF. None so far. I haven't but observed the noise complaints other reviewers have mentioned. It wasn't a concern for me in the very first place considering that this sits in my server area, but for what it's worth I can barely hear it more than the other (relatively quiet) hardware in the room.Took 9 hours to initialize a 6TB RAID 5 array.

Operates with Windows & Linux comes with disc with drivers and the PCI-E card does a lot much better than on-board. Your choice of running a RAID Level up to 5 is good, but I wouldn't trust it to an eSata even if I'm acquiring good speeds better for storage so if your into making a media center like I am, having one particular boot drive, and moving all your storage drives in this unit is useful. Also the advantage with much less drives in your Computer works greater on heat. First day I got it, the power button fell out and the Computer-Link/Power Lights didn't operate, -1 egg. Located the button and got it back in, didn't matter the push button inside was workable with a screwdriver. Don't recommend that even though. I know barely something about RAID so my knowledge is restricted my suggestion is don't run them in one. I couldn't think about how windows or linux would re-act to a RAID five with 5 2TB Drives depending on the speed you get 200-300MB/s if a drive were to fail it would most likely take days to restore anything. Work while not upgrading to 10.6.7. Loud adequate to keep you awake all night. In particular the raid card is difficult to locate and denies itself as a raid card. Initial setup took couple hours in acquiring right driver which Sansdigital claims it's built in 10.6 I have ten.6.5 and there is absolutely nothing in localhost򏚊 ahead of/after reboot. I forget how this localhost򏚊 function but it shows this is not a raid version. So I go back to search the driver but nothing readily available and there is no link for rocketraid 622 management suite. I lastly got the correct driver installed from CD it come with.
