Cons: Commercial software and game choices can be lacking - but always appears to be improving. It helps to have a techie friend around, or you can make a friend over at http://freegeekvancouver.org/

Pros: Open source, secure update  distribution, secure package distribution. Tons of documentation for all levels of the system and opensource applications. A community that wants to help you with any of your problems!
Comment:
Ubuntu is based upon Debian Linux - which has been around for quite some time... MS/Windows is learning from the unix world: asking for authentication when installing system dlls or updates have been standard Debian since... well, the mid 90's at least. One of the coolest things my 13 yr old son said once was that when you looking for help with your system the windows forums are all full of people complaining they can't get such-an-such feature working but the linux forums are all full of people making replying to help people get such-an-such feature working! Consider http://ubuntuforums.org/

I didn't buy this from NCIX, but I downloaded this off the official Ubuntu website. I used it for a while and honestly, I'm impressed. This is a free OS, and the first time I used it I was really amazed with the functionality and stuff it comes with. I was dual booting this with Vista Ultimate and I must say, Ubuntu was a bit easier to use in my opinion.

Why would anybody buy this item while it's available for free at www.ubuntu.com ? You can order CD for free or download it.

Cons: None if you really know what Linux is about. (no ultra super game)

Pros: It's Linux, some will say '' why would you pay for Linux?'' Well i got it for 2.99 and I would say it is more convenient this way, you are 100% sure it's working and you don't have to burn the iso. Tons of open source content.
Comment:
Excellent OS, I've put it on my gf laptop. Why pay over 100$ for an os when she is going to be using Firefox and open office.

Cons: Can be time consuming to get things setup, or should you make a mistake. Sometimes software/driver updates can cause problems. I ran into this with one of the fglrx updates for my ati card, I had remedied this by installing from the binary straight from ati rather than the package listed in aptitude.

Pros: EASY (for linux) reliable, and no need to reboot, support is pretty much instant in the opensource world
Comment:
Well it's linux. but with a good looking, easy to use, completely customizable gui. I had mine looking like Mac OS X for a while...You can't do that in windows, but you can make Ubuntu-desktop look like windows(but who'd want to do that, that is like a vegan eating non-meat products that are made to look like meat...it just doesn't make any sense.GRAB THIS The Intrepid with updates is stable as anything!!! No need for a custom Kernel.

Great OS, I use it on my main machine, my dad's and my eee 1000H. Handles everything I can throw at it and there is a great community setup that will walk you through even the most 'trivial' of commands.Have Crossover (paid version of wine) and am able to run MS Office 2k3, and 2k7 with ease.Highly recommended.Support forum: http://ubuntuforums.org/

Cons: Out of the box appearance is lacking (if you want Ubuntu to look nice, you need to customize it, which isn't hard, but default user interface should be nicer)Some problems with some peripherals - printing to disc on Canon printers requires workaround; support for Canon all-in-one printers lacks ability to scan on some modelsSome software requires command line use, which can be frustrating for new users accustomed to click and install on Windows

Pros: Basically free (except for cost of disc and shipping)Good selection of software available through Synaptic Package Manager, etc.Very customizable
Comment:
I've been using Ubuntu for about a year now and while it's probably one of the easiest Linux distributions, some things it needs to improve on.The user interface is pretty cheesy out of the box, but supposedly the maker of Ubuntu has hired graphic artists to improve on this. You can customize the look by installing new window borders and themes, etc. There is a wide variety of them, but sometimes not the one you would like or just clicks as being fantastic.Support for certain hardware can be frustrating. Some printers or all-in-ones have limited functionaly in some cases. I have a Canon ip4500, which can print directly on a CD/DVD disc, but to get an easy solution, I had to download a trial version of TurboPrint 2. That works perfectly, but the trial only lasts for a month and then it prints "TurboPrint" on your page, etc. I'm not sure if it will print this on the disc (still have to try it again), but to get the full version, you have to pay every year to use it, so it's not a viable solution considering the operating system is free and you want a free solution. There are some good things to say. My video card (eVGA 7900 GS KO) was detected and I was given a message to allow me to download the nVidia proprietary driver for it.Works perfectly now with all the effects being enabled. Some Windows software will work through Wine (basically a Windows emulator). Not all Windows programs will work however, but it's getting better.I find the speed of Ubuntu to be good. Bootup time is fairly fast (much better than XP, but around the same as the Windows 7 Beta). Programs run fast, but in Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex), users have noted that Firefox seems slow at many times. I've noticed this myself (Firefox runs slower than in Windows), but hopefully a fix will come in the updates soon.Overall, Ubuntu is worth checking out. I don't depend on it totally; I have a partition on it with Windows 7 Beta as well.Considering it's Linux, it's fairly easy to use in relation to many other Linux distributions. But, if you're coming from Windows, there are still a few things to learn. Cons: I would suggest people to have a good grasp with computer before trying to use. Also you can get this free right from the company, and even download it legally for free from them, google ubuntu

Pros: runs on the oldest hardware just finemost user friendly flavour of linux
Comment:

Cons: Costs $5

Pros: Security, Interface, Applications, Price
Comment:
Very nice operating system, a nice introduction to GNU/Linux and has visual effects comparable to Vista. It only takes under 2 GB of disk space to install, and doesn't need very much memory at all.It comes with Open Office, a very nice collection of games, nice editors, and it is very easy to add and remove software. It's really easy to use and you never have to worry about registration or trial software.I highly recommend it.
