Comment:
This is not a workhorse. If you require a desktop replacement you may encounter disappointment with this unit.Largely reminds me of the DELL Inspiron 700m I owned in 2005: Lightweight unit facilitating mobility/transportation; and though the hardware specs lack "robustness" the notebook functions responsively for basic computing needs. This notebook is an excellent choice for students and business professionals seeking mobility at an excellent price point. ASUS has designed a stylish, well-constructed notebook that delivers a responsive computing experience at a price that won't break the bank; a welcome change from all the high-priced bogus hype that permeates the tech retail industry.Highly recommend. Would buy again without hesitation.

Comment:
Our previous laptop was literally falling apart so we decided to get something affordable and portable. I was pleased to learn of the battery life on such a compact laptop, as this is something I value and the battery duration times were unheard of. Picked up this little beauty from NCIX and I haven't been disappointed, the battery does last forever. I guess to make sure your battery life is within the range of what they advertise the default power scheme will turn off the monitor or put the machine to sleep pretty much every time you run to the fridge for a drink, but even if you change those settings to something more usable the battery still goes on forever.Style and ergonomic-wise, I think this laptop is great. I like the balance of black and silver and everything seems to fit together nicely; no ugly gaps or the like. The hinge is smooth for opening the display and provides nice viewing angles; haven't noticed any big issues with glare. This is obviously not a hot rod, but if your needs are simplistic (internet, docs, watching videos, etc) it's just fine. I haven't tried the HDMI output, but I'm pleased it's there. Might try out Netflix output to my TV in the coming weeks. The keyboard or handrest never gets hot and it's never noisy either. The touchpad is either love it or hate it. It uses the multitouch functions which is probably common on most new laptops, but the touchpad area is flush with the handrest below the keyboard. You can see where the touchpad is but there's no indentation. This is great for keeping dust and toast crumbs from getting down in there but we do see the odd instance where the cursor seems to jump around when not requested. I noticed (in the settings) there's some logic built into the touchpad to avoid false alarms but I don't think they're avoided all together. Perhaps this doesn't bother me too much because my old Dell laptop did this all the time, to the point where it seemed like the cursor was possessed. This unit doesn't have a DVD drive which is both a pro and a con. I haven't missed it at all, but I did spend an extra $40 to get an external unit for those odd times where it's necessary. I love these new drives that get their power from USB, so quick to plug in.ASUS put a bunch of programs on it, most of which I have no idea what they do. I also had to purge Office 2010, so you might have a bit of clean up to do if you want to keep things trim.Overall though, I'm very pleased with this purchase and I would definitely look at ASUS again for a notebook. Compared to my experience with my past Dell, this thing is a godsend.

Cons: Slightly thicker and heavier than similar CULV laptops. Trackpad has no delineation from palmrest, easy to run into with my thumb when typing. The glossy bezel makes the screen feel glossier than it already is. Sucky rocker button on the trackpad. Big translucent image overlay in the center of the screen when using the function keys. Lid and screen are flexy and can bend a bit. The keyboard can flex too, but I suspect that it's probably a removable flap. Fair bit of crapware pre-installed.

Pros: Very quiet hard drive. Nice, clicky chiclet-type keyboard. Nice dust-blocking SD reader insert. The trackpad is very receptive to multitouch commands. The trackpad itself was slightly sticky on first use but it soon started to become usable (definitely not a replacement for a mouse). CTRL key is in the very bottom-left corner of the keyboard, as it should be. The accidental damage warranty completed very quickly; I received confirmation in about 8 days after mailing via normal post. Very very quiet fan, and the exhaust is generally quite cool even when the computer is under high load. Incredible battery life. HDD/RAM covers are easy to remove.
Comment:
Let me reiterate: the power life is incredible. I'm a student and I'm able to use the laptop for 7 hours (on High Performance, with screen brightness varying between 0-60%). The obvious tradeoff is that the battery is relatively enormous (the laptop is less than 2 kgs, but the battery itself is about 0.5 kg). Personally, I think that's a tradeoff I'd gladly take for great battery life.Splashtop turns on in only a few seconds, but it has limited use and it's locked at a very low res. It's just me, but I don't like the black bezel/keys and gray body colour combo, and would have prefered an all-gray or all-black scheme instead.Another weird thing is that the HDMI port is right next to a USB port, and when I first started using this laptop, I easily confused the two when I'm not looking. The play/pause keys (via FN) only control Windows Media Player/Center by default, and I can't figure out how to change it.Point is, this laptop is a wonderful low-voltage laptop/notebook that's not quite notebook or netbook for daily desktop use but not for big video editing/gaming use.FYI, the palmrest does get warm, contrary to what the stickers on the laptop say. It's nothing serious, but it's noticeable.

If you want a real usable portable machine that can last for 8+ hours without plugging in and do not require a magnifier, this is for you. Good build quality, good keyboard size and usable touchpad ( I mean, there is no touchpad that can replace the good old mouse ).Not the quickest and the fastest. Surf the web and do daily office work fine. 1080P playback no problem (get the right software!). Wish that it would have come with a protective sleeve...even an asus netbook has one!If you are a serious gamer, you know this is not for you.NCIX was quick in PM and delivery...excellent!

Pros: Battery lifePortability - thin, light, and smallScreen
Comment:
This is a very good little notebook - it does everything you would want in a portable computer. The battery life and thinness of it are major strengths...there is nothing more annoying that having to worry about your battery as you type away or surf the internet.I did much research before I bought this computer and am happy with my purchase. I've read some have had issues with the wireless capability, although I have not had any problems. I have also found the having a CD/DVD is NOT necessary as you can just use a USB flash drive for movies or to install programs. In terms of the graphics card, all I care about is that I can watch movies in high definition....the Intel integrated graphics can handle a 1080p movie without any problems. The slight keyboard flex and bloatware are minor problems....the only real complaint I have is the trackpad...it really does suck because there is much too much friction with it - your hands have to be perfectly dry for it to work. You can learn to live with it, or you can buy a wireless mouse instead. I also debated whether or not to by the VT version of this computer, but I can say that more graphics power is not necessary....are you really going to play Grand Theft Auto 4 on a 13.3 Inch screen? More graphics power for this user is not needed. All in all, it's a great little portable notebook....I have used it several times in hotel rooms and while visiting friends and it provides all I need. I rated it 5 stars, although if I could rated it 4 1/2 I would have because of the trackpad.

Cons: The battery life lets you work all day away from an outlet, and the multiple graphics cards and power modes allow you to not sacrifice performance while you're plugged in.This Asus laptop review covers the UL30VT A1, which has longer battery life than the original Asus UL30VT X1.

Pros: The Asus UL30VT A1 is a laptop that straddles the line between full-size notebooks and smaller netbooks. Its 13.3" widescreen display allows it to be significantly smaller and more compact than typical laptops, while providing more screen real-estate than sometimes-cramped netbooks.
Comment:
If you're in the market for a new laptop and like the idea of a netbook, but think you might be better off with a more capable, larger laptop, then check out the Asus UL30VT A1. Get the battery life and much of the portability of a netbook with the power and full-size keyboard of a typical laptop.

Cons: A lot of Asus Bloatware in my opinion.

Pros: Battery Life, Weight, Size, Performance (Typical Daily Use)
Comment:
This is simply the best laptop I have ever owned. I have always been a fan of the smaller screen size, portable, longer lasting laptops over the big bulky more powerful ones. Perhaps because I have a pretty capable Desktop at home anyway. If you use your laptop as a laptop, meaning away from a desk and not always plugged in, this little guy is what you have been searching for.Battery life is great, have never had to charge it during the day, from typical daily use. (streaming video, word processing, internet browsing, music playing)Personally I am a touchpad guy and I have absolutely no problem using the touchpad or the buttons on this laptop. The keyboard is great, love the chiclet style. The screen is terrific, vivid, bright, thin.Windows 7 runs fantastic (as always). If you are a typical laptop user (not video editing, gaming etc) this is the perfect laptop for you.I cannot comment on technical support or warranty support as I have yet to need either.Asus has really 'knocked one out of the park' with this product.

Great laptop for University, huge battery life, lasts easily 8-10 hours without having to cut features, which lets you not need to worry about charging it every chance you get.Super light and thin, and performs well for Office and movies etc. Can also play SC2 on it on lowest settings but does lag a lot on customs when armies start to get pretty big, but being able to at least watch replays or play 1v1 is a huge plus for a laptop that wasn't designed for gaming.

update: after one month of using this laptop I can say that i am 100% satisfied with this asus. this laptop is perfect balance between battery life and performance. i do not get advertised 12 hours batter life but on average i get about 9 - 10 hours with wifi on and power profile set at "quiet office". ms office is snappy on this laptop. even light image editing with photoshop is not an issue.hd videos and streaming in 720p is flawless. 1080i or 1080p is choppy. too much for intel integrated on board video chipanyways, except for mousepad which i hate with passion(i got nice mouse slimblade mouse from kensington) this laptop is perfect. i got the laptop three days ago.i switched from asus 1000he. my requirements for new laptop were decent performance, low weight and long battery life. ul30 exceeds all my requirements. i did a lot of research before i decided to take the plange and get ul30. in my opinion ul30 is the best laptop in its class. only other laptop which was in similar price range with similar specs was acer timeline 3810T. but asus wins with overall quality, better lcd screen, longer battery life and two year warranty which is pretty sweet. ul30 performance is excellent especially after having to endure painfully slow atom in my asus 1000he. everything feels quick. i did not run games yet and i do not intend to. i know that games will not run well or at all on this laptop. but this does not bother me. i have ps3 for games.pretty much this laptop can run without recharging for about 10 hours surfing the internet ,wordprocessing etc with wifi on. overall built quality and materials used are excellent.speakers are excellent. definitely better than average.lcd screen is very good. it is bright and has excellent color saturation. some complain about asus going with glossy screen which is bad for working outside. i do most of work indoor so this does not bother me at all. i love ul30 chiclet keyboard. it is pleasure to type on it. ul30 has very thin profile and it is not heavy at all for its size. asus express gate is pretty awesome. express gate is for quick internet access without going into windows. it takes literally seconds from the laptop to be ready to surf the internet. I dislike touchpad on this laptop. i find it it irresponsive and imprecise. i wish that asus just installed old fashion touchpad with two buttons. things that i wish were better on the laptop are webcam which is pretty bad considering that my asus 1000he had 1.3Mpx webcam. Also i wish that bluetooth was included with the laptop. but this is just $20 upgrade. overall ul30 is a great blend of performance and portability. i highly recommended it. Pros: Very light-weight, long battery life, no bloatware, comes with Windows 7 64 bit, nice keyboard.
Comment:
I purchased this laptop because I needed something for University that was light, portable and has long battery life. I never had any of the major wireless issues (ie. very poor signal strength, dropped connections) that others have complained of, but noticed there was only one antenna attached to the wifi card. I bought a universal mini wifi antenna from eBay for about $5 so I now get an extra bar and 2-3 more connections showing up, but this isn't necessary to do.Videos look fine on this laptop, but the graphics are poor if you're gaming or running graphics intensive applications. Then again, this is not a gaming laptop!Asus instant-on ExpressGate (SplashTop) is something I rarely use. I'd rather wait a minute for win7 to boot than use Firefox 3.0 with an OS I can't customize. Then again, kinda convenient to just quickly check your email.I think all touchpads are terrible so I've always used a mouse with laptops, but this one is exceptionally annoying: the sensitivity settings don't allow for smooth operation. The button is also very stiff to use.I'm currently running a bootloader with Backtrack4 and Win7 - I use this for network security testing as well as school. I'd say I get between 8-10 hours out of it. It's essentially a netbook hybrid - so it's lightweight, portable and thin, but has a reasonably sized screen, awesome keyboard, great battery life and ok processor. (If means anything to anyone, the Core 2 Duo U7300 it comes with scores a 4.1 on the Windows Experience Index relative to my i7 920 which scores a 7.4.) If you're thinking of purchasing a netbook - instead consider this laptop if it's still in your price range.

I originally had a bulky HP laptop that was pretty power-packed. However, I'm a student and lugging that thing to school was getting tiring so I opted for something lighter that was more suitable for schoolwork. I came upon this Asus UL30A-A2. I am very very pleased with my choice. The battery life is INCREDIBLE. It goes at least a good 8 hours on moderate settings. I'm sure battery saving mode at minimum brightness can go the full 12 hours. The build is very solid and the chiclet style keyboard is pretty nice. The screen is very bright. I didn't think I would like the brushed aluminum at first, but it looks very nice in person. I've received a lot of compliments about this laptop. The touchpad seems iffy to me right now, I think I might have to send it in for warranty. The pre-installed software is okay, unlike other companies. Did a clean install and ended up reinstalling about half of the utilities that came preinstalled. Runs pretty smoothly overall.

10+ hours on battery (with minimal NOT maximum saving settings). 500GB HD, 4GB RAM, and 64-bit OS....nice! Only problem is it comes with a factory partitioned hard drive (as some of us do not want that) but easily fixed with reocovery option (F9) that allows one to recover OS into unpartitioned drive. Very easy fix. Also loaded with extra ASUS "software" but also easily removed. Overall a great, portable computer for the price.

Looking i the specifications before I ordered, I saw there was a bluetooth indicator light. Hmmmm...bluetooth, nice. Optical mouse included. Nice. Of course they would include a bluetooth mouse with a bluetooth enabled system. At least searching the box for the mouse and looking for the bluetooth indicator light will give me time to download the newest Ubuntu variant. Still looking.

Pros: -slim and light-long lasting battery-decent enough viewing angle for 2-separated keyboard makes for comfortable typing-stylish design-low profile in use (quiet)-speedy with a duo-core; tho obviously not for gaming/heavy editing purpose-addition of actual useful programs instead of bloatwares (there are some. u can check the notebookreview.com site to find out more)-2 yr warranty-1 yr accidental drop/spill warranty

Ul30a-1 is the model i got. Its the exact model as a2 except it came with a 32 bit os rather than the 64 bit they all come with now (w7 ftw). At the price range it is the best of its class and I wasnt disappointed with the purchase. W7 runs beautifully on this machine. The low profile keyboard makes taking notes in class a breeze and the long battery life means that i can be on campus for a whole day without the need to find an outlet. This is all on top of the 2 warranty provided free of charge from asus. so what are u waiting for? go out and get urs now!I give it a 4 star because of its wifi problem. Asus might be releasing a drive fix for it soon (hopefully it is just sofware) otherwise one can buy a cheap antenna on ebay for a mere 6 dollars.
