This laptop I've received came with a bad battery unit not holding charge, taken care of by manufacturer within 14 days requiring me to send bad battery. The power and performance given by such an exquisite laptop has made it capable of holding 3-4 hrs of high performance mode (using dedicated graphics card) and 6-9hrs on battery save mode. I would consider this a relatively brilliant all-around laptop for an avid pc user. Handles coding like a dream, and switching power profiles with ease. Brushed metal cover, with glossy keyboard area and somewhat matte screen. I just wished it packed a larger HDD and a better CPU. But that should stray you away. I can almost guarantee you that you will not be dissatisfied, savvy users. May Asus Live long and Prosper!

I bought this laptop based on the review by PC Magazine, which rated this newly released model very highly and in fact listed it as one of the Editor Choices. Similar to the review by tk on March 11, my first shipped unit had a bad battery and was returned to the vendor. Not knowing that this model may have a battery batch problem, I received a second unit which had the same issue, namely the battery would not charge beyond a certain level, and the computer would die instantly when AC power was unplugged. Since one of the main features of a small and light notebook like this is the portability, this apparent battery issue needs to be sorted out by Asus.

I bought this laptop as a high end laptop for my daughter to use in college. Supposet to have a 10 hour battery which means usually 5 hours half the listed expectations. Well this computer works great and my daughter loves it...light weight and packs plenty of performance. Only problem is it came with a bad battery. Came out of the box not takiing a charge. Im currently awaiting the replacement battery from asus but what has me displeased with it is i had to give out credit card info to get the replacement battery on the way and have only 14 days to send in the old battery or i will be charged the price of the battery. thats bs when you pay this kind of money for a student notebook you shouldnt have to chance more money on a battery. I expected more from asus than this. This is the 5th laptop type computer ive purchased. Im at odds with myself for going this route this time.

Cons: Gloss.attracts.smudges. Also while the brushed aluminum top makes it a great looker, that stops pretty fast the first time you put a little dent in it.

Pros: Battery life, aesthetics, ability to switch between onboard & discrete graphics
Comment:
Excellent laptop. I have been recommending it to anyone who has been asking me lately. Battery life is superb, overall weight is quite manageable for something this size (I'm used to smaller devices). It's nice to be able to choose which graphics are being used but I'm looking forward to the next model that will switch automatically as needed. You can't go wrong with Asus laptops in general and at this price point with the provided warranty it sealed the deal for me.

Cons: Gets smudged too easily. Lots of stupid stickers.

Pros: Light, sleek, long battery life, great screen. Good warranty.
Comment:
The battery life on this model is fantastic. The screen has a good viewing angle, one of the best I've seen on a laptop. The warranty is good at 2 years, with the first year also providing accidental coverage. The battery life of 12 hours is actually reachable with the power settings, I've been able to get 12 hours a day when doing websurfing and schoolwork. The switchable graphics is almost seamless taking only a few seconds to swap between the Nvidia and Intel graphics chips. At 2kg this thing is lighter than alot of other full-sized notebooks, and looks great. The glossy surface does attract smudges though, and it comes with alot of stupid stickers that show off the features of the laptop, which are a pain to take off. That's the only problem with it though. If you want something more that can go all day, this is definitely worth a look.

Cons: * Fingerprint magnet* Build quality is a bit questionable; slightly squeaky palmrests. Would have been better if entire body was made out of aluminum* Some bloatware, but easily-manageable. Not as bad as HP or others* 0.3 MP webcam* No Bluetooth* Speakers aren't as great as they advertised, though they are louder-than-average* Bad viewing angles

Pros: * Beautiful aluminum exterior finish; overall aesthetically very pleasing * Relatively thin & light considering it still has an optical drive; battery is flush with the laptop, not sticking out oddly from the base* 8-cell battery; claims of battery life are TRUE! I can get up to 10 hours with Turbo33 enabled on battery saving mode, doing web browsing and word processing* Low-profile, dust-resistant, chiclet-style keyboard* Responsive multi-gesture touchpad, though integration with the palmrest material may be hit-or-miss for some people.* Turbo33 overclocking compensates for low-speed processor* Hybrid graphics: integrated to conserve battery life, dedicated for movies, games, etc.* Doesn't overheat, palmrests cool to the touch* 64-bit OS* 4GB DDR3 RAM* Decent-capacity hard drive* HDMI output* Facial-recognition software is not fullproof, but is amusing nonetheless* 2-year manufacturer's warranty, 30-day dead pixel warranty, 1-year battery warranty, 1-YEAR ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE WARRANTY!

For some of the incredible features ASUS packed into this laptop, you have to expect some trade-offs for the price. Most common gripes you will hear about are the screen and build quality. The screen is acceptable, and I've been able to stare at it for hours without suffering eye fatigue. Resolution could be a bit higher, but once again, for the price, it's acceptable. Build quality seems to be a hit-or-miss for some. The first wave seemed to have experienced the most problems, and I've heard from people on review forums that ASUS has been trying to address the issues in later shipments. Unless you're incredible nit-picky, I wouldn't say the build issues are a deal-breaker; it's not like the laptop looks like it's about to fall to pieces.I say that it's an acceptable compromise to achieve this level of hardware performance at this price. Some have noted that you couldn't do better, performance-wise, if you had paid $400 more for a Macbook Pro.It's by no means a gaming laptop, but it can certainly play most modern games at native or near-native resolution, without sacrificing visual quality.

Cons: -GLOSSY! Why do companies do this. This loses it an entire star; all else would just be 10% of a star so it still gets 4/5-Some flex in the keyboard but nothing major-5.4K RPM drive rather than a 7.2K RPM drive-No eSATA port or ExpressCard to install either USB 3.0 or eSATA ports-Lots of bloatware pre-installed-Lots of stickers that are sometimes hard to remove

Pros: -Switchable graphics-Lightweight-Battery life, about 10 hours with Wi-Fi On and Brightness turned halfway up-ASUS ExpressGate-4GB DDR3 RAM-Fast for a machine like this-Brushed metal lid-Keyboard is nice to type on-Touchpad works well, usually I hate them-Feels larger than it is somehow-Looks like it has style-OS is x64-Warranty is nice from ASUS
Comment:
Overall, this is an amazing laptop and feels like a 15.4" yet it is only a 14". It would get 5/5 from me but the glossy everything makes it lose one. It is not just the screen, surprisingly the screen is not that glossy to me; usually I only like matte finish screens. But the rest of it is very glossy; on the palm rest it is like a mirror. But enough of that, it is a fast machine despite the 5.4K RPM drive and if you plan to put a 7.2K RPM drive in; it would be nice but not needed. An eSATA port would be nice but I like how this model has a DVD Drive though I would prefer an ExpressCard slot or an eSATA port to it. The keyboard is a joy to type on because I love the island style keyboards and the TouchPad works well. Bloatware is easy enough to install. Many people complained about flex on this but I do not see much of it. A slight flex in the keyboard but nothing like creaking in the palm rest.Overall, it is an amazing machine and is so light. I am very glad I bought it. I may change the review when I have owned it for longer. This review was modfied by poster @ 12-12-09 05:41 PM

Cons: - Some people/reviews complained about build quality, but I can say it is not that bad. I do get some light keyboard flex on the left side. No palm rest creakiness as some reported. - Screen has bad viewing angles. Resolution could be higher. - Webcam is subpar, though not a big selling point for me. - Asus bloatware is awful. Only good softwares to keep are power4 gear, data security manager (managing all passwords) and fastboot. Took me about half an hour to uninstall everything else.

Pros: - Very stylish laptop. Aluminum lid looks very nice.- It’s thin and light, very portable. - Battery life is awesome. Spent 4 hours working on it (internet, word, etc.) on quiet office mode, battery still had under 4 hours left!!!!- Large palm rest area makes for comfy typing. Keyboard layout is also very good and easy to work with.- This laptop was running for 2 days and never got hot. It is also very quiet.- Performance is great for that type of laptop. Switchable graphic gives you the best compromise between battery and performance. - Comes with windows 7 x64.- Asus warranty is one of the best in this industry: 2 years with the first year total protection. Also, no dead pixels for 30 days protection.

I've been searching for a good laptop for about two months now and I had my eye on this one for quite a while. I looked at many brands and model, but the Asus UL80VT-A1 got me in the end. EXCELLENT laptop with great performance and battery life. Don't let the reviews get you down about the build quality, I found it quite good. You can't go wrong here people!
