Cons: TLER no good for systems with no hardware raid card, price high for 1tb.

Pros: Reasonable running temp, not noisy, respectable speeds, great warranty support, reliable long term operation.
Comment:
I use this model drive as well as a WD RE3 series 1tb drive in a raid 5, 4 disk raid. The initial 3 drives that I received (WD RE3) 1 ended up bad as reported by raid card software. Additionally, raid card log indicated drive timeouts periodically with various drives intermittently. Data integrity remains solid however. Drives are loaded in a drive cage with a 120mm low noise fan blowing on them and these drive all stay cool to the touch. Never had a drive fail other than the original shipping related damage. I am always looking for a sale on these drives as they provide good reliability and perform great in a hardware raid.

After all of my drivers and other junk was installed, the drive was about ᡪ% fragmented, but it was the fastest drive I have ever even used. Defragmentation was significantly less than 45 minutes, making use of about 50 GB's of space. And, this is making use of IDE mode, which really should make it a bit slower in multitasking or random accesses.Slightly audible, but not incredibly loud still. uhhh... a bit on the high priced side, but worth it. The Master File Table is about 94 GB's... that's bigger than my old really hard drive's capacity!Oh, and, this is the only drive, no RAID or other factors, I'm a Computer, not a mainframe.

I bought 6 drives in 1 shipment along with 2 hot-swap backplanes. The six drives arrived in ESD sealed bags inserted in a foam rack and then rapped in bubble rap. All of this packaging was placed into a box that was full of the foam popcorn. So as far as the packaging, I'm throughly pleased.I utilized a previously purchased adaptec 3805. I'm operating all six drives in a RAID six array. I'm still transfering all of my previous files over to the new array, after complete I'll be performing functionality tests. So far the transfer prices with the RAID card and drives is about what I had anticipated, offered the capabilities of the card.with 128MBs of RAID cache I get involving 70 and 120MB/s more than a GIG-E network, which could be limiting my huge file benefits. None so far. If newegg continues to package challenging drives in this style, I'll continue to use them for all of my future tough drive requirements.Only getting these drives for significantly less than a week I can't totally attest to their high quality or functionality but.My previous 500GB WD drives that have been in a RAID 5 with 5 drives lasted about 4 years ahead of one particular of the drives began to have challenges and required to be replaced.

- The overall performance from these drives is good. - None so far I ordered three of them for a RAID 1 array for a HP ProLiant MicroServer. The server only accepted two- or four-drive arrays. A single of them is now a cold spare.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16859105954

Cons: Not as fast as a SSD but I cant complain about the speed.

Pros: No complaints

I am satisfied with the RE4, 1 TB is plenty for me. I installed windows 7 with no problem and it took about 15 min.

Built like a horse, this hard drive can take whatever we throw at it. We've installed almost 100 drives in the RE4 line, about half 1TB. They last forever, drive failures are Extremely rare, and they just plain perform. None.

Cons: Kind of loud when writing and reading files

Pros: Fast, 1tb of storage, 5 year warranty, 64mb of cache
Comment:
It's kind of loud but with headphones or even just playing music you won't hear it. It is extremely fast though and my games load up a good 5+ seconds faster.

two out of 4 seem to be very good. Have been building computers for over 12 years. Bought hundreds of drives from Newegg. Under no circumstances had a negative 1 out of the box. Bought two of these at the similar time. A single formatted and worked with no a hitch, (so far) the second wouldn't format. Sent it back and got another and bought a different for a raid 1 array. It formatted then when I went to mirror it, it reported a poor block. Immediately after two hours and a sync of 2% I quit. Now have to RMA it. I will request my $ back. I don't want any longer of these drives. They were wrapped in bubble wrap as is the custom with Newegg. The third on is in a Raid 1 array with a less high-priced drive that I bought locally. Just hope it holds up. For an Enterprise drive, I'm not impressed. A+, MCSE, CCNA.

Tough drives are fantastic, never ever had a WD problem just before, drives are performing fine as of now. Newegg shipped these Ɣ of them) in no bubble wrap of any kind, just a strip of brown paper on leading and the drives laying on the bottom with nothing at all beneath them. Physically these drives had to have at least 1 bump beneath UPS's handling, but the fact that they were really TOUCHING the box is even worse.THAT IS Genuinely Negative. I haven't seen any errors as of now, but I will RMA Newegg if I get a undesirable apple mainly because their shipment was horrible. Horrible shipment.... will update this critique as time will allow and if the drive do go or poor. Eggs will be deducted or added as needed for bad/good drives.

Faster sustained throughput ࿦% more rapidly) and more quickly burst transfer 鲤% faster) than my preceding, 4-year-old 500 GB enterprise drive. Built for enhanced durability and lowered error rates, which is essential when employed extended and/or intensively (i.e., built to last). Much less susceptible to vibration than normal drives. Runs quieter and slightly cooler. Fees about 45% much more than the equivalent Caviar Black drive, but you get what you spend for. I feel I had to post this speedily, specifically soon after seeing John Grumman's assessment (posted fourǜ񳏋 twoᛘᚽ PM). I contacted Western Digital technical support who confirmed that his statements are incorrect. The appropriate info is as follows (paraphrased): If you are using RAID, then you must use an RE series of difficult disk, such as this 1. If you are not employing RAID, then this RE series drive provides enhanced reliability more than the Caviar Black drive, with no disadvantages (other than the greater cost). For me, data reliability (in a stand-alone, non-RAID configuration) is paramount. Secondarily, larger efficiency is desired. This drive delivers on all fronts. I'll update my assessment in the event that my drive fails.FYI, I'm operating this on Windows XP SP3. The Computer is operating 16+ hours per day, 7 days per week, periodically with intense activity (database, development, day-to-day virus scans, weekly backups, quarterly surface tests and defrags).

Too long to clarify. It's "RE4" class. Non-professional folks very first appear at size, nicely it's so wrong. Most essential spec of a storage (if your life, work, and so on. depend on data!) is reliability, NOT size.Quite huge drives are mathmetically less dependable due to higher information density, reliability per-platter decreases exponentially. This HDD, at 500GB & RE4 class is the best deal for reliability. I would really pay additional if cost was higher. It's far more than you would spend for a common drive but it;s worth it.64MBcache & just overall quick & quiet &RELIABLE, dual microcontrollers, dual spindle supports (most desktop drives on the market are single controller/shaft support).RE4 Enterpirse/Server class.Adequate said. NONE! Should USE IN "RAID" ONLY (Raid1, 5, ten, but avoid Raid0) if your aim is reliability. Do NOT use in desktops as a stand-alone harddrive, b/c Enterprise/RAID edition storage like this 1, have TLER setting enabled in firmware. Users cannot disable it, and it is meant strictly for RAID. Making use of this drive standalone limits error-recovery, for that you woul duse WD Black, Blue, and so on not this RE4 model RE4 is for RAID only (TWO DRIVES AT LEAST)..
