Cons: No disadvantages except perhaps price; other drives cost less sometimes. There's a reason they cost less.

Cons: Really loud, but only when seeking. And throughput is a bit lower than my previous primary HDDs: 2 Samsung 320GB in RAID 0 (I know, not an apples-to-apples comparison).
Pros: Really fast, tons of storage, high throughput, and good response times compared to my previous HDDs. Here are my average access time results from HD Tune Pro:512 bytes: 14.28 ms4 KB: 18.797ms64 KB: 14.374 ms1 MB: 24.270 msRandom: 18.441 ms Comment:
I spent 2 or 3 hours a day for like 3 days doing research and reading reviews about this HDD, so I hope you find it helpful. It's a really good buy and the hard drive seems high quality. |

Cons: a little noisy.
Pros: Works well in Intel RST and considering the current price of HDD'd it was an ok deal. Comment:
I built a new system over the holidays and used old drives until this had a price I could deal with. It's not a bad drive on its own, but used in a IRST system it works nicely. I wish it was on sale for pre-flood prices ;) |
I've been using these WD Black drives in various desktop machines around; if you are willing to spend the premium price, these are the drives to get. BLACK not Green, or any other brand. I have had TERRIBLE reliability out of almost every other brand I've tried; I know essentially they are the same designs.. But WD just does something different with materials science, or quality testing after the fact, or both... If you want your data to be safe, use these drives. If you couldn't care less about your data, then go with something cheaper. People have so many files they don't even realize how valuable until the drive dies and takes your files with them. (Back up your data to another drive also! -- I use another Black in a USB3 external enclosure..)Just an aside, they are not meant for RAID, the Black line. I have read somewhere that you can modify the firmware to make them work in RAID, but I'm sure that would invalidate your warranty. If you want RAID drives, try ssds, or the RE3/RE4 enterprise class line of Western Digital drives.
