I do not own this, but I use it for function. There are two kinds of drives you would want, 1) Operating Program, and two) Data. Following best practices, you spot every thing significant to you on your data drive. For household users, this is exactly where you location important individual documents (taxes, bills, pictures, web explorer Favorites, and so on). You will sooner or later fill up your information drive, that's when you archive your information by burning it to optical media. Speed is not so significantly an concern right here, exactly where capacity is.Your operating system drive is where all of your computer software is installed, and thats it. When choosing an OS drive, you want to make sure its the fastest and most trustworthy you can buy. Speed here outweighs your capacity specifications. No matter if you pick a RAID0 of Intel X25's SSDs, or a ten,000RPM Velociraptor, theres often the expenses vs capacity vs speed components to take into account against your spending budget. as a information drive, overall performance is not constantly there, but here, capacity >>> functionality. Lastly, you would get a backup application to backup your operating program drive. What very good is separating your OS from your Data drive after your OS drive catches a virus. There are quite a few possibilities here, Acronis Backup and Recovery ten, Norton Ghost 15, and so forth. The point is, when your computer catches malware, you place your boot disc in, inform the app to recover your laptop from the backup you created (monthly, weekly, depends on your wants). Come back five minutes later (again, this is fast as you do not save personal information on your OS drive). Obtaining games, and huge apps (Photoshop, etc) would of course make your recovery occasions longer. A basic Win7 x64 OS with absolutely nothing else is ɝminutes to recover. If you comply with these very best practices, you save fees by not paying a salesmen dressed as a geek to touch your individual information on your drives. Not rocket science.

Biggest drives on the marketplace. If you personal a 2010 mac pro you can put 4 in the 4 mac pro bays. Giving you 12tb in one machine. They are just as rapidly as 2tb caviar blacks. They expense about the similar as a caviar black. They cost less then a western digital re4 enterprise drive. they run cooler then either of the other drives. They run quieter then either of ther other hdds. If you have a new 2010 mac pro any model and will need large drives these are the ones for you. 12tb in the pro is straightforward. infact you can put the 5th 1 in the reduced tray of the mac pro's optical tray and have 15tb. All in a single machine. These also run in my synology 1 bay ds110j. this offers you a 3tb machine for a nas for a excellent price tag. All you really require to know is will your machine run them. Windows has much more problems with them then Mac osx 10.six They run in rosewill 8bay and sans digital 8 bay cases with my mac pro. I tested them as a 18tb time machine in a raid0 got incredibly good speeds. 300MB/s for me one particular con 3 yr warranty not 5 year like western digital caviar blacks or re4's. For others if you have the incorrect osx or windows or the incorrect enclosure it will not see the drive. Just before you acquire make positive your pc will do much more then 2tb as a single volume.

Nice quantity of space for a fair price. It is a incredibly quiet drive. See other thoughts. I essentially bought the external WD enclosure that this drive is in (赉 vice the existing 赧 for the internal proper now) and ripped it out to drop in my method. Because of this, I lost a bit of space due to the SmartWare that is on the externals (small value to spend for the savings). Had some troubles at the time of set up; Windows manager would show the drive as a 2tb partition and 𞽐gb partition devoid of the capacity to combine them. I attempted a number of techniques to format the drive as a single partition but nothing worked. I finally hooked it back up to the external adapter and was capable to format it as a single drive that way (a bit over two.7tb vice the 2.8 you'll get from the bare drive). Gonna grab two more and go RAID five.

Quickly shipping, excellent value. Not free of charge? For these that are getting concerns obtaining the entire 3TB ƒ.7TB formatted), go into disk management (Control Panel>Admin Tools>Computer Management, than click on Disk Management on the proper). Suitable click on the disk, and choose "Convert to GPT disk" That worked for me (Win7 64-bit, making use of Gigabyte GA-X38-DS4 board, drive in an external enclosure)

Massive, not too costly Cant access the complete 3TB even using their application and following the guidelines. Purchased this to use as my boot drive, unfortunately windows would not even show the drive with no utilizing the WD True Image computer software, now windows does see it as a 2 TB drive as an alternative of three with an nallocated 1TB that I can not even partition.. My method is a 6 core set up with eight gigs ram running Windows 7 Ultimate X64.

Ignore bad critiquesŋst, The drive not working for people is due to limitations of their computer system NOT the drive. They would have the exact same dilemma if this drive was produced by Samsung, Hitachi, or Seagate and if the size is 2.5TB, 3TB or 5TB. It's silly how men and women are rating this horribly because their computer doesn't support it2nd, Enable me to clarify if this will function for you (Experts no want to study this component) this is for noobs:If you strategy on making use of this as a common drive (Not as your major/boot):This WILL function for: 32-Bitኜ-Bit Versions of Windows Vista, 7 & MAC LeopardThis WONT work for: 32-Bit Versions of Windows XP.If you strategy on using this as your key boot drive (Where your OS will be installed), then:This WILL perform if your in 64-Bit Versions of Windows Vista, 7 & MAC LeopardThis WONT operate if your in 32-Bit Versions of Windows XP, Vista & 7In other words, This WONT work in any version of XPAlso, this WILL function as a USB Device in any operation technique There's no cons about this drive. The ş con about a drive is if it fails, and most of the time you won't see it fail for months/years, at which point no one particular will come back and update their evaluation lol, so...I guess you can say Price tag, but the price tag completly understandable. It's pricey simply because of 2 motivesɅ) Highest Capacity. You'll usually be paying a lot more to have the biggest feasible hard drive.2) Early Adopter. This hard drive just came out, of course you'll spend a premium to obtain it just before everyone else.Considering that this drive is the biggest AND it just came out, you'll be paying tons for that luxury. Just some factors to hold in thoughts:January 2009, 2TB hdd's launched at 跌January 2010, 2TB hdd's price on typical 贬Nowadays, Oct 2010, 2TB hdd's price on typical 贄 (๪ on a great deal). It's secure to assume this 3TB drive will follow this priceline:Now: 趐two Months: 赨eight Months: 񘐝 Year: 񘈩 Year: 5TB HDD @ 踰Just a wild guess genuinely...

Installation took about ten minutes in my Win 7 tower - the SATA RAID card supplied with the drive only has a brief PCI slot adapter - to match in my machine I had to unscrew the SATA raid card from the steel PCI slot adapter and fit it to a regular length adapter, then put it in the machine. I hooked the drive up to the adapter, powered up, and all drivers installed automatically - no problems at all. Rapid format, GUID partition table, and the drive was ready to get data in another 5 minutes. SATA RAID card is only supplied with a quick PCI slot adapter - it genuinely really should come with each short and lengthy - I think the majority of customers going right after this drive almost certainly have normal sized towers, not mini desktop machines. Fast and easy, runs fast enough for multimedia, big digital images - no troubles so far.

Obtaining written the assessment about a month ago wherein I couldn't get the disk to perform with an enclosure, I can now report that there is a brand new difficult drive docking station that performs! It is the Rosewill RX-DU300. They also make an enclosure that operates with 3TB disks, the RX-358-U3B. Plugged it in, and what to my questioning eyes should appear in disk management, but 2.72TB!!!!!!!!!!!! Formatted up in no time. None My setup - HP Notebook pc, 4yrs old, no BIOS update, MS Windows 7 x64 Expert. I didn't obtain the WD My Book external 3TB drive due to reliability problems reported in the evaluations at the time. Hope I have much better luck with this enclosure.

Still costly but not as bad as I thought it would be. Like I mentioned, my 2TB and 1TB cost about 跌 when they first came out.Rapid transfer speeds but backing up 3TB of data is nonetheless no picnic. I think it was someplace in the vicinity of 14 to 15 hours or a lot more. Fantastic drive. Went beyond my expectations for a tough drive of this size. High capacity, decent speed for a green drive ࿜ MBps) Does not work properly on any of my Windows 7 64 bit systems. Though it formats to 2.72 TB, only .7 is usable by my 64 bit OSs, reading or writing. It functions just fine on Windows 7 32 bit and can read/write past the .7 mark. What gives?! I have identified a handful of situations on the world wide web of the afore talked about issue. How does this dilemma exist on a 64 bit OS which is supposed to totally help this drive?! Just an update for any reviewer(s) who state no compatibility with WinXP and the like. I was reading by means of WD's white paper on Advanced Format Technology and they offer you a resolution in the form of a system named WD Align software program. May possibly be worth a appear if you're seeking to preserve XP.At least there's nonetheless persons out there searching to the future. I don't personal 1 but.... :O( I've got a 4tb array and haven't filled that up however so I'll be waiting for these 4k sector drives to grow to be far more accepted by hardware and computer software such as imaging programs and cloning hardware. Then perhaps they'll lift the 512byte emulation on the controller. Haven't observed any disputes about RAID however, so I think it's unaffected by the move.... Everyone heard something about concerns relating to defrag like with SSD?

Large storage, runs cool and quiet, decrease power consumption. This allowed me to raise my storage in my NAS without having possessing to go to a bigger unit. This is for Marc and Al's comments below. If you consider your tech skill level is as high as you indicated, then you would have known the 32Bit limitation of windows. Most Technical folks would have currently performed the analysis prior to they ran out and purchased this drive. Not for use as a boot drive! Get it for extra storage on a 64Bit program or in a NAS

Really should be wonderful, proper? DON'T Acquire THIS. Avoid AT ALL Cost. Like other people I was stoked to get these drives to use in my Mac. They perform fantastic. No difficulties. Quickly, roomy, best. But then there's Windows. Operating Windows through Boot Camp, as soon as Windows boots and sees these drives... CRASH. Blue screen of death. You get about 60 seconds of Windows before the crash. Crashes on just about every boot... one hundred% guaranteed. No drives to tell Windows to chill. Totally uselss.

Challenging to locate PRO, maybe 1 star is due for its appear as tough drive You will be disappointed if this drive you want to run under Windows 7. There is no driver for included SATA adapter which is apparently essential by this drive since no motherboard readily available on the industry can handle drives above two.19 terabytes. When installed Windows 7 will download some unknown driver from Windows Update which will crash operating system every single time. Hardly ever PCIe cards can be utilized with brief bracket. Manufacturer should include things like extra long bracket to install such a card - it most likely would not cost much more than 25 cents, with out such bracket many customers can have a lot of difficulty.

(I am utilizing Server 2008 R2, so 64-bit. This is strictly a data storage disk. I have SSD for a method drive. To be blunt: if you're getting this disk as your program drive you are seriously not intelligent. Get oneself a 7200 RPM WD 640 GB, 10K RPM Velociraptor, or a nice Intel SSD. This drive is grossly inappropriate as a program drive.ƛ) I have had no problem either with onboard Intel ICH9 or my PCIe Silicon Image 3132 based controller. Although WD integrated a card, I would discover it secure to say that if you have 64-bit OS and a SATA-II (not SATA-1) disk controller, you'll be fine2) The drive runs *very* awesome and very quietly. This is good.three) Yes, it's 5400 RPM, but I'm finding a good comfortable ㆈ MB/sec off the disk. These are all sequenential file transfers to/from the disk of HD films.4) I appreciate this. This drive is like a cold beer immediately after a hot day. Price per/GB, but that's how it is.

Quite quiet and silent drive. Everything worked fine on first try. For now you have to have a free PCI-E slot to install the HBA that came with the disk so the OS can recognize it. Had to convert to GPT so my Windows 7 x64 bit would see the complete disk, on MBR sort windows could uncover only 760GB.

To the reviewers claiming the drive doesn't work on the latest hardware "X58", ect. You're right, but the blame is with Intel. They haven't updated their SATA drivers but for 64-bit addressing. Commence knocking on their door. The native SATA driver in Win7 does help it. Lots of confusion relating to the combination of hardware (BIOS, SATA controller, ect) and software program (drivers) necessary to set the drive up. WD does provide all you want in the box to get the drive running. It's when you stray from that setup, like me, that you want to do your homework!

Lots of storage for a good price tag and from a very good manufacturer. Fantastic for back up and significantly a lot more (media servers are the finest at household). None. Make positive your mother board can deal with that size if your computer is older, some of you may well have to flash your bios to get total use of it on older computer. If this is your boot drive like some other individual said they did (convert it to dynamic then gpt last extend partition after loaded os, in order to keep it one partition otherwise you can only use 2tb as boot drive). None of what I posted is as challenging as it sounds, take pleasure in your new drive if you bought it.
