Minuses - no menu support, format mov doesn't supported, for DTS should be receiver. The down side is that WD doesn't do much to improve situation through updates at least. Quality is pretty good though impossible to turn off unit to avoid overheating. Performance is perfect.

Junk. Great at first, then HDMI output stopped working. No warranty from NCIX. Would not recommend this to anyone.

I have it since Feb. 2009. I just can't live without it. I bought it mostly because it plays MKV files. I have a lot of HD movies in that format and also some anime. Its AWESOME!

I had the WD TV for 3 months now and so far I've been very happy with it. It works well viewing your pictures, listening to your MP3's and watching home video and movies. It can even make your big TV like a big digital photo frame while playing music in the background. It plays almost all the video format you can throw in to it with the exception of MKV files for some reason some MKV files looses it sound. But it runs HD movies like watching Blueray. The only thing I don't like it doesn't have a power switch. Power on-off using the remote but its not really off because if you touch the unit its still hot.

Cons: -No support for DTS-Not network connected

Pros: -Plays pretty much all file's I've thrown at it.-Small and simple

I bought this for my parents to have access to my media files stored on an external drive. No major complaints so far, I've had some issues with file seeking with HD movies, sometimes the system locks up but I just need to reset it. Keep your eyes peeled for the Live version of this as it addresses many of the common weaknesses of this model.

I bought this player and two Passport HDDs several months ago and have movies on one drive with music and Photos on the other. Absolutely great for watching AVI formatted movies and MP3 music. Runs continuous music when we have guests. I highly recommend this product.

Bought it yesterday in one of the stores (Tiger have plenty of in-store stock) and couldn't be happier! Unit is very compact, good looking and does exactly what it supposed to do. Tried several different formats and it had absolutely no problems handling them although for some files I had to switch screen mode as it zooms when you change audio tracks. Remote is small, light and ergonomic. This a truly great buy!

Cons: * Tiny remote is pretty useless and forces you to go through a menu for basic things like switching subtitles, zooming, etc.* It's not very responsive, especially for video actions like fast-forward and even pause.* Can't transfer content between two USB devices.* Has frozen on me a couple of times with an MKV file, even with latest firmware.

Pros: * Recognizes and plays almost al media files and subtitle formats.* 1080p upconverting.* 2 USB ports.* Inexpensive.* Firmware is still being regulary updated.
Comment:
It is not without its flaws (sluggish, bad remote), but at that price point (when on sale), I don't think you can find a better 1080p media player. If full HD is not a priority, then you might want to consider something else.

Cons: No included ethernet port

Pros: Plays many formats, including mkv with x264 codec. Can power 2.5" USB drives. Hackable!
Comment:
I bought this device to play x264 mkv files in my living room. I originally had a 2.5" drive connected to it and was pleased with the fact that a single USB cable was enough to power it, making it very portable. I later found out that you could run hacked firmware and decided to give that a shot. It was relatively simple and it allowed me to plug in a usb ethernet adapter. I tried using a wireless G connection, but that's too slow for 720p HD content though a wireless N connection might! All in all, great productPS: I might add that in the meantime there have been a few bluray players that support the mkv format though their price is still too high... Once they hit the 150$ area, I may change my vote to one of those!

Cons: Doesn't have an ethernet port. Capability to stream on this device over the network should be officially supported by WD.

Pros: Plays a lot of formats. Very small form factor. Can't go wrong with the price when it's on sale.
Comment:
The WD HD TV Media Player is an all-in-one solution in a tiny and affordable package - very simple and fast.I specially like the ability that it remembers and gives you the option to start playing from where you left off.

All I have to say is if you have a external hd or need a media player without having to hook up a computer to your tv it is absolutely worth the money. Just run the update for it using a thumb drive. blue ray mkv rips plays flawlessly that and any other format. highest selling point is the fact that firmware upgrades are part of it since new codecs will most likely emerge later on.

This unit is all that it is advertised to be. I have had mine for about 4 months now and it has played everything I have thrown at it except RMV/RMVB. It does had an issue with decoding DTS audio. I believe from research that it is both a licensing issue and a hardware issue. It only has HDMI 1.2, and it takes at least HDMI 1.3 to carry DTS thru the HDMI cable. But that is easily solved by using the freeware program ''Popcorn Audio Converter'' Just convert the DTS 5.1 to AC3 and all plays well. I am awaiting the WDTV Gen 2 coming out and when this retailer carries it. It will decode DTS and also has a network port.

Cons: Sometimes it's slow and unresponsive. Handles mp3's wonkily.

Pros: Wide range of video formats supported. Very price effective.
Comment:
Get this, and a large volume external hard drive, rip your DVD's onto the hard drive, and you can put the DVD collection into storage. This is a very handy and convenient way to run your movie collection - it's tiny and takes up almost no space.

Cons: -runs hot if not ventilated-no dts decode-slow at loading pictures

Pros: -plays almost everything-compact-price
Comment:
It plays almost anything I've tried on it. Just too bad it doesn't play rmvb. Has the right connections I need as well with hdmi and optical. Just doesn't decode dts signals or do dts-hd pass-through. Got a few of these for others and so far so good. Does run a bit hot if not ventilated.

Bought this device for viewing .avi .mkv and other documentaries, videos etc. also for playing music through the stereo in the living room rather than blaring music from the den (!!) worked like a charm, upgraded without hiccups as required during installation. works like beautifully with the WD 400GB HD and other USB jump drives. I've used it over the last 2 weeks and no troubles this far, Remote is easy to use, a bit too tiny....Only problem you might face is the short AV cables!!! Hope this helps!!

It does everything it says it does, but slowly. They need to update the software to include the playing of more video formats. Picture quality is great--true 1080p. The unit has one major drawback: there is no on/off switch. By turning the unit "off" from the remote control, it stays hot--therefore using electricity when it's not needed.

Cons: - No PGS subtitle support- New version coming out soon (WD to drop  support on v1.0?)

Pros: - Plays my HD movies without a hiccup- Small and cheap
Comment:
Great little streamer. It plays my full quality HD rips without a hitch. I send the untouched video stream right to the TV and stream the core HD audio streams to my receiver. Some people will complain about no TrueHD/DTS HD, but there are so many reviews out there that have shown there is little-to-no-difference between those codecs and their core streams. And this is on ~$20,000+ audio systems. One thing I wish it had was PGS subtitle support, which would mean I wouldn't have to convert subtitles into any format. Please WD!

I have had one of these ever since they came out and I loved it at first. It produces flawless 1080P motion decode of .avi and is small enough that it doesn't bother the wife - who would see a PC next to the flatscreen as clutter. However....there is a really disapointing design screwup that WD admits to (if you call them). If a .mkv or .avi HDTV file has 5.1 sound (about half of downloads) - you will get silence out of the HDMI interface and will need an optical input through an A/V receiver to get sound. Upgraded firmware and still no improvement. This defeats the whole advantage of the small little box next to the TV. I might as well put a clunker PC there and that will play everything. Called WD - they admit it is a flaw - shame - hopefully in the next model they will fix it. Best to wait till then.
