this crap-ware or whatever people are talking about was simple to remove, i always remove it with my virtual windows from a CD to repartition the drive and whatever was on there get's erased but these drive works great, never had a problem with them as far as my customers said to me. |

This WD My Passport Essential 500GB External Hard Drive is a pretty good deal!I use this one to keep my Photoshop References/Data, and it loads nice and fast. (Used to burn the data onto DVD - much faster with this!!)I also do not use the software that comes with it. |

I have always been annoyed at burning dvd's in order to back up important files etc. or to transfer them.now that I go this device I am very pleased to be able to move files back and forth and with ease. this product is quite handy and I am very happy with it. |

Excellent drive for the money (only get it when on sale). I only the fact that only 1 USB port is required and not 2 like many other 2.5 externals out there. They could have included a case or at least a cloth bag with it but oh well. Great product!! |

A good little portable HDD. Good for everyone and for everything. As I'm an IT specialist, i don't like WD SmartWare but it's a good soft for non IT people.I recommand to everyone to get one.Another good point, Western Digital warranty are the best of all, I've returned more than 10 personnal HDD and every time I got a fast replacement ! |

The hard drive is small and has decent transfer rates giving me about 25-35mb/s.Got this drive on sale for less than 80 so it was a smart deal.It is very small. I disagree with the others that the hard drive cable is not good. I personally like that it is incredibly tight and that they do not use a proprietary cable. With REGULAR wear and tear i could not see this cable or the drive being damaged in any possible way.There really was nothing i disliked about this drive... it delivered in every possible way for what i expected from it. |

Small USB connector port (really really bad idea for portable drive), although the connector has been updgraded I think because it snaps into the unit REALLY tight.. to the point where I can carry it by the cord if I wanted to (yes it is that secure). Note: It runs like doo doo on Windows 7 64 bit. BUT--slow USB transfer speeds have been reported by many users of Windows 7 64 bit, regardless of USB storage device, so it wouldn't be fair to pin this on WD.
Pros: Small, light, durable, runs cool, high capacity, cool software, great password and encryption protection. downloaded that entered through our home network through a share. Take it from me: you WANT to put the password on this drive so it can not be accessed. Great feature. Comment:
I wouldn't take too much stock in what folks are saying about the software and virtual CD thing. Once you set a password your drive is LOCKED down and can only be unlocked with the password. 256 bit encryption ensures this drive is USELESS to everyone but the owner.. so do NOT forget your password! I am not using the backup software, but I did install it to set a password because my last external drive got WIPED OUT by a worm one of my kids downloaded that entered via a home network share. Yes, that hurt. Take it from me: you WANT to put the password on this drive so it can not be accessed. Great feature. |

although, i have trouble with weak power coming through my usb port. when its powered, its fast, big and cheap compared to usb or flash drive which is like ssd. They are know fast and more reliable than hard drive but sadly they are very expansive and only available in small capacity. |

This is a pretty good little storage unit for the price when on sale. I've got the 250 gig version as well as this one and I've been happy with both. The short usb chord isn't a biggie as they can be had for next to nothing. This is a decent drive that I can recommend to anyone looking for storage on-the-go. |

I have been very impressed with the WD passport since I purchased it. It was a great deal on sale, and it provides a nice portable storage for a lot of my large files. Only downside is it does scratch very easily and the USB cord is very short. However as most PC's have USB ports on the front, you can rest it on top of the PC and it will be fine.
