An cost-effective unit, Quiet,I kinda like the capacity gauge.The potential to remove the WD smartware installed with the hd.I bought this unit at a box retailer,coud 've been my initial error. This model was my 1st.TB,applied primarily for back up storage. This model has freaked out on me twice,fortunately I was in a position to retrieve my information by reinstalling.So, I thought bugs were fixed & commence to store about 500gb of classic movie files on it,unit crashed last week.All gone,but unit appears fine soon after reinstall & updating,removing safety,sleep functions.We shall see! I choose the WD my book plain TB,without out all the goodies installed.That unit is crammed with info,defrags & tranfers quickly(for usb two.).Back up your back ups! I prefer the WD my book TB,with out out all the goodies installed.That unit is crammed with information,defrags & tranfers rapidly(for usb 2.). In no way a hitch with that model, connected to exact same notebook,the exact same abuse and has not freaked out.I have come to trust this unit entirely.These days I purchased one more right here @ 1.5tb,,thanks Egg!! |

Massive low-cost drive. The plastic case surrounding the drive is extremely fragile. My SO forgot it was plugged in and dropped it 2 feet to a carpeted floor. The case came totally apart and the drive fell out. So I got a fantastic look at the interior as I reassembled it. It is just a drive with a plastic light guide to the front panel and four pseudo-rubber corner bumpers. Inside 60 days the drive stopped responding and couldn't even be low-leveled. I doubt it was from the drop shock. Either way it is a fragile device. The included computer software is worthless. It only enables categoric file backup (docs, mail, movies, music, other, images). There is no technique or selective file backup alternatives. Install the driver. DON'T set up the backup software. WD warranty service cross-shipped me a 1.5TB drive for the 1.0TB drive. We'll see how that works out. It looks like the precise similar case and configuration. |

light and tiny It crashed on me twice already and it requires forever to recover all the files. I do not know what causes this to happend. I just turn off my laptop few days ago and then later that evening, i turned it back on and all my files can\'t be found and its asking me to reformat it. I can't think it happended to me once again. So now im right here hunting for a superior external and I want to make sure I will study the critiques first ahead of acquiring some thing. Space Almost everything else. Affordable Western Digital storage. Functions fantastic with my Windows 7 Pc and my Nintendo wii. Smartware can be used to password protect your data and to backup your computer. Don't purchase any difficult drive with a warranty of much less than 2 years. I believe I will purchase only these that supply three-year warranties from this point forward.2. Purchased this drive to perform nearby back-up restore on my media computer mirrored drive (being paranoid, I use Computer Mozy for a non-nearby back-up). Big capactiy ƑTB) suggests I can maintain several copies of my photos / movies / music. Relatively affordable and incredibly uncomplicated to operate. The computer software is TERRIBLE!! I run a quad core with 4 Gb of RAM with Vista House Premium O/S, and the WD Smartware commonly slows my Pc to a crawl. I reported to WD tech support the problem and their answer was to reinstall the S/W from their web page. Wiped my pc clean of their software, did a clean install - S/W is nevertheless a resource pig. Looked on the internet - many posts complaining of the identical performance challenge. Other problem is if you remove the S/W, it attempts to reinstall just about every time you boot the drive. I have resorted to disabling the S/W after my Pc boots up. That has resolved the difficulty but suggests I have to reinitiate it to carry out back-ups. Old drive was a 320 320Gb Seagate with no the computer software that I would perform manual back-ups with. I bought the WD simply because I wanted to have a much more automated back-up method. This is the second time I have bought a Western Digital drive and the second time it has failed on me right away immediately after the warranty has expired - therefore requiring really pricey data recovery. The drive was really cheep when bought. The energy brick is significantly smaller than previous western digital caviar external drives. And the drive is fairly quiet. Prior drives, gave off an awful screech. It is really slow. Painfully slow. File transfers on the drive take an extraordinary amount of time. However, the power savings profile is also aggressive and the drive continually desires to park and go to sleep. The end result is just about every time the laptop or computer requirements scan its drives, the pc will stall waiting for this point to spool up. It causes the boot process to take forever, and applications to go unresponsive at times. Backups with Windows 7 backup take days. I usually set a calendar reminder to backup, manually plug the drive in and turn it on, carry out my backup and then unplug and turn off. Would not recommend, and seeking for option. |

Incredibly great for the price tag. I purchased mine currently and plugged it in and performs like a charm. The software program is incredible. Tells you the temperature (If its OK, Undesirable ext.) When backing up files it lags my computer A LOT. The backing up files method takes SO Lengthy but that may be my fault for not plugging it into a 2. USB port.
