Cons: DLNA slows down transfer speed

Pros: Cheap when on sale
Comment:
Got this when on sale. The drive in side is WD20EURS, which on other reviews has ~120MB/s transfer speed. But when used in My Book Live using Windows share on gigabit ethernet, I get 80MB/s reads and 40MB/s writes. I noticed when writing videos, the transfer speed slows down to 20MB/s. It turns out that DLNA service is scanning the file as you are uploading it. The built-in DLNA is slow and does not work nicely with large number of files, so I suggest never enable it. Mobile app WD Photos only lets you upload to the Public share, which is a minor inconvenience. Overall it is a good value when on sale, especially when the whole device is cheaper than the hard drive in it.

Pros: Appearance, speed, easy setup
Comment:
Overall very good product. Solid build, cable long enough, easy setup. Software response rather slow during transfer, but I can copy/open files through Windows explorer anyway. It does let you access files on drive from pre-setup smart devices from anywhere with a WD app. Setup page is http://**device_ip**/UI/, where you can see drive volume usage. What a joke this website turns out to be. Search for NAS and it says this drive is in stock and on sale. Click on the item for details and it says 'sorry' you cant buy it anymore at the sale price but hey, you can buy it at regular price or these other items at a higher price. Typical bait and switch techniques.

Cons: Doesn't stream to my DLNA certified TV. If you are buying it for this, I wouldn't. Has something to do with outdated software that WD will not update.

Pros: Works great with the WD live and other computers on the network
Comment:
Generally a good purchase but disappointing after I added my Sharp 70" TV. Fortunately I have a media server PC hooked up to my TV so I use it to stream to my TV, I was hoping to get rig of it with the WD Live. Lots of chatter about this problem but to date no work around. Better to buy a proper NAS if this is your intention.

Strong transfer prices. About 45 MB/s. Straightforward on power. Runs cool and quiet. NFS primarily based file technique suggests any consumer device can access it with out messing around with Windows NTFS permissions, registry settings, and nearby policies. Internet GUI is super slow and clunky. If you just need storage, costs just about twice as a lot as a 2TB drive. The MioNet application is buggy and completely worthless. Not fault tolerant. So if the drive fails, I'm out of luck. I purchased two of these drives for two reasons. 1) To be able to turn off my desktop Pc and save energy while... two) Nevertheless possessing my media centrally shared about the residence and generally readily available to my WDTV Live players. It works properly. Also, if you haven't looked at other network challenging drives and drive sharing options in this price variety, the efficiency here is really top notch in comparison. Unless you strategy to drop 800 on a dedicated NAS, you won't get far better create speeds. Trust me... I've been seeking for a extended time.Don't get scared off by persons screaming about WD drives dying. There's constantly a opportunity that the unthinkable will occur, but my practical experience at my job with 30 or so WD My Book drives over the final five years has been only one failure incident, and the data was nonetheless completely recoverable. Their high quality really isn't any worse than the Hitachis(aka Deathstars) or Seagates or the globe.

Operates appropriate out of the box, all my pc's and boxee box identified it without having any set up neccesary No usb to attach other harddrives. I was skeptical about this drive reading the testimonials, but I purchased it and compared to my D-hyperlink DNS 321 this factor flies! The ideal transfre speeds I could get out of the DNS-321 was around 15gbps, on a gigabit newtwork. With this drive I routinely se 45-50mbps, I'm thrilled.I wan't to interested in obtaining a raid setup or something like that, just anything that will store my bluray rips and connect to all my devices. This Networked drive fits the bill perfectly. Might get two far more later on.

Simple, does specifically the one particular issue it is made to do: supply network storage. Excelent speed, no troubles running H.264 (AVCHD) video from it, I set it up with no the offered application, straightforward web interface, quiet, sleep mode no straightforward way to replace the difficult drive, you would need to have to crack the case open. no bells and whistles right here a very low thrills device, one energy plug port and one netrowk plug port constructed into the unit, nothing at all else. no fan (not genuinely confident if this is a con) even though it does not get hot, it does get warm to the touch I actually like this unit, quite effortless to setup but very "dumb", meaning it does NAS and that is it period. Then once again that is the only purpose I purchased this unit, I just required a reasonalbly priced NAS resolution with fantastic preformance, objective completed. I use an external hard drive connected to a Computer to backup the NAS, not as convenient, but much more flexable and more affordable then buying a good dual drive NAS

Appears sleek and is really quiet until ... ... till it started malfunctioning. I was copying about only three gigs of information when it all of a sudden started clicking and thunking loudly after about two hours of use. I did not purchase this from NewEgg, but from another company that had terrible customer service, and I ended up having to spend shipping back to the merchant for a defective device. NewEgg undoubtedly requires far better care of their customers. Manufacturer Response:We apologize for any inconvenience you could have seasoned with our device. Setup was as straightforward as it must be. Connected power and the ethernet and inside a handful of moments the drive was accessible from my Windows 7 machine. Transfer speed was acceptable, copying 80GB+ of photographs in just over an hour. Streaming of pictures and music works effectively to my Droid X and streaming videos to the PS3 constantly operates fantastic. The software is useless for my purposes. The application has a good interface but provides no level customization. All files on the computer system are categorized into a single of the following groups: Program, Images, Other, Music, Mail or Documents. Backup for each and every of these categories can be toggled on and off but there is no customization for enabling/disabling particular directories. In the short quantity of time I've had the drive I am pleased with the hardware but find the software lacking unless you want to backup your entire drive.

Look to perform ok for a although. I am a consultant and utilized to suggest this series to consumers for external backups. Terrible mistake - 70% or additional of the drives from this series have failed inside a few months of warranty expiration. I wrote a letter to Western Digital outlining my experiences with these drives and got back a reply basically saying they disagreed with the reported failure rate and didn't believe there was something wrong with their solutions. I would under no circumstances take into account making use of Western Digital MYBooks to retailer critical data. I had actually hundreds of these drives at client web-sites and the failure rate is crazy. Manufacturer Response:We apologize for any inconvenience you are experiencing with regards to the My Book Live, as this is not typical of our devices. I have a few of these on my home network for music and video. They were easy to setup without the software, even for a networking noobie like myself. The user interface is a bit sluggish but for as often as I access the UI it's not a big deal. I had to flash both of my units twice in order to upgrade to the latest firmware but both flashed without any problems.I get average speed of 65 MB/sec read and 35 MB/sec write on my gigabit network. A nice thing is how quiet these things run, almost silent with virtually no vibration.

Backs up files SLOWLY Backup is extremely slow. About 9 hours for just more than 107 GB. Remote access does not perform. MioNet, the software program you use to access the drive, reports that the drive is offline all the time. Software support has no clue why this is. Can not share file or music or something else. once again assistance has no notion why this does not operate. I am not the only one possessing trouble with this drive just poke around the net and you will uncover plenty of other people. I have constantly bought WD drives in the previous and have had great luck with them but this unit IMO is not worth buing

Cons: -has problems with Windows 7 64 bit when trying to access from a wireless connection

Pros: -pretty easy to setup if you know what you are doing, does not require to install software -decent transfer rate with a gigabit connection-price -remote access feature is convenient-easy to manage multiple accounts with various access restrictions
Comment:
This drive works as advertised and is pretty easy to setup if you are more or less familiar with computers (and can setup your home network). I keep my movies, music and photos on it and it serves the purpose well. Unfortunately I cannot give it five stars because one of my computers runs 64-bit Windows 7 and when I try to access the drive while my laptop is connected to my wireless network - I simply cannot access the files. Looks like other people have similar problem and there is no known solution. Streaming to my laptop works fine though. Thankfully I have 32-bit Ubuntu running on my laptop as well, and I can access the drive from there. Excellent product otherwise.

The Write and Read speed is very close to the actual drive limits, quite rare for a NAS priced at this level. The internet administration is simple to use and the iTunes library sharing works wonderful.I have not attempted the supplied software. None, but a Raid 1 remedy would have been good. Generally connect this to minimum Gigabit networking. With 100 MBit is the read and create restricted to ㅂ MB/s by the network. With Gigabit is the write for substantial files about 50 MB/s (Mega-bytes or far more than 2 GB per minute), read is even faster. With FreeFileSync is this performing as a dream maintaining 400+ GB of data sync'ed amongst my 2 laptop and a desktop/server with 4 TB RAID5. I devote less than ten minutes each day undertaking the sync and I can keep my desktop turned off and only boot when I want it.The kids can get all the music and movies they want to with the sharing to iTunes. Nevertheless with the desktop/server turned off.

Backup is nonetheless quite slow. WD ultimately came via soon after the third contact. I was in a position to speak to someone who knew how to fix this drive, so there is some hope for it. This is not exactly as WD depicts on their web page. They claim it it quite effortless to use, it is not. The documentation that comes with the drive, as properly as the assistance on the net, is poor at greatest. For example there is no mention that the backup files that are automatically backed up are only readily available for restoring. If you want to share files or stream music you should copy the files manually to the mapped drive (My Book Live). If the documentation had only told me that; I would not have panned this drive. WD phone support the initial two instances I named had no remedy to the quite a few difficulties that plagued this device. It was only right after the third call that they place a genuine tech on the telephone, and following some head scratching he solved the issues I was getting. All the trouble l had with this drive came down to poor documentation, and less than knowledgable telephone help. Now that it is operating it seems to be ok. I would not recomend this drive to a novice user unless they like to be agrivated. I would not acquire an additional a single.

Cons: Only one complaint, but I don't really care about becasue I would never personally use it for that purpose, its a slow USB device, but we didn't use it for that anyway, did we?

Pros: So many pros with this unit, this autodetects instantly with USB, it 100% Wii compatable for doing 'you know what', I own three, upon disassembly I found these have WD caviar green SATA II drives inside, for mounting into a tower as an internal drive.. This also did not void warrenty.. Bought at 129.99, shipped, came cheaper than regular or sale prices..

This little box is very impressive. What you get is a 2TB external hard drive and a small linux based computer. You can ssh into it and do a lot if you have the know how. I got Transmission up and running and it has no problem handling a bunch of torrents while streaming content to an ATV2 running XBMC. It has a bunch of other features like an iTunes server and DLNA server which I'm sure would be useful to some people but I can't comment on those features because I have yet to use them. I've seen transfer speeds as high as 55MB/sec to this device. For the price, this box is awesome, I'm sure a year or two from now when/if they come out with bigger ones, I'll get another.
