Easy to get running, affordable value, runs excellent with two - Xeon E5520 cpu's and 12gb of Patriot 1333Mhz DDR3 (runs at 1066Mhz of course). Solid board with ATX kind element. Chipset gets incredibly hot, needs active cooling or better heatsink. Not sure what all the fuss about the Asus MIO sound card is, I purchased a single from Newegg at the identical time I purchased the board. Just searched for Asus and MIO and it popped up. No challenges with this setup at all, installed ubuntu 9.ten-server-beta-amd64 with no troubles. Currently churning out folding@home bigadv operate units at a brisk pace devoid of so significantly as a hiccup. As mentioned, the intel STS100C heatsinks perform nicely with this tightly packed board.

*It's an ATX board and will indeed fit in an ATX case*ICH10R southbridge provides you a RAID option if you don't want to shell out for the Z8N-D6 *No sound (as it tells you)*INCREDIBLY tight match for installing CPU heatsinks I ended up returning this board due to the tight, tight, TIGHT CPU configuration - I had a relatively reasonable sized (e.g., little) heatsink/fan that I couldn't set up largely simply because it was really pressing against the RAM... so I'm going with an SSI EEB board from Tyan.If you want an ATX board, this is as excellent an choice as any, specifically for the price. But, make positive you either get a Xeon with a stock cooler or get a sane-sized a single since it's very really hard to find a 1366 socket cooler that isn't made with the gaming crowd in mind (e.g., the "cool hunting" stack of metal approach)

Purchased this board for a dual xeon workstation/server. I was attracted to this board mainly because of its type element. The reality that it would fit in an ATX case made piecing together my workstation considerably less complicated. It has plenty of room for expansion cards, and connections for any peripherals you can think of. Operates nicely with a number of linux distributions out of the box. LAN autodetected in Ubuntu No onboard audio. On board video SUCKS! It flashes between the color it really should be, and saturated blue.No obvious orientation for placing CPU coolers since processors are so close collectively.Board is a tiny cramped. N/A N/A Just wanted to add a thing to my preceding review. Two Xigmatek S1283V Dark Knight coolers fit on this motherboard. I was using Dynatron T667s, but had to ditch them since the CPUs had been operating way also hot. With the Dark Knights the CPUs are cool and quiet and I'm am in a position to use the machine as a workstation.

inexpensive, decent documentation If you're unlucky sufficient to get an older version of the BIOS, you won't be in a position to use the westmere six core cpu's (X5650 in my case). I don't have a spare 5500 cpu to flash the BIOS. I called Asus, and they were supposed to overnight a new BIOS to me (at ษ shipping), but sent it ground rather, causing additional delay. Shame on Newegg for advertising that this MB supports 5600 Xeons...you can appear by means of this thread and see several examples of the similar challenge. Running Duel 5640s and sporting 24 GB 1333 DDR3. This board has been a rock. Received it with the updated BIOS and worked flawless from boot. Excellent for a workstation box due to the regular ATX kind issue. This is my 6th or 7th board from ASUS and I've yet to have a failure. Newegg service was fantastic as generally. No overclocking, no SLI\Crossfire as it only has a single PCIe X16 slot. If you're on a budget and don't call for server level storage options, namely SAS, you can't go incorrect with this board.

Fantastic value, avarage high quality and specs. Does what it's suppose to do. ESXI four., windows server 2008 r2 and win 7 worked good. Compatible with regular ddr3 ramƑ.5V). Allow vt-d if you want to do virtualization(disabled by default) No Firewire, the constructed in graphics card is not that good no sound card. If you are going to obtain this mobo, STS100C cooler is a ought to. You can't just use a single of those gigantic non-standard coolers.

Runs ESXI without having problem. All drivers supported. Speedy. Working with 1 of nic as an iscsi initiator and it functions just fine. All with intel if you be positive you investigation the cpu. Lower versions of the new line will not assistance hyperthreading, and will bring down the ddr3 to 800mhz. Pondering of swapping out the cpu to a 6 core for esxi one licensing limitation.

Mine came prepared for my E5620. Everything on it seems to function with my set up of ESXi 4.1u1. None. Supported memory list was fairly brief at the time of acquire, so you may possibly have to gamble with RAM. Built a whitebox ESXi machine with this, a E5620, Kingston KVR1333D3S4R9SK3ǜG, and an Intel RS2WC040 RAID controller. Smooth sailing so far. Searching forward to expanding this when I get some a lot more $$$.

6x Sata three. gb/s on-board raid ,1,five,ten, dual gb NIC, 6 DIMM slots, fantastic expansions, dropped proper in to a chenbro 1u chassis. Value. Asus Assistance. If you are looking for SAS, you will need to get the model up, this has robust SATA, but not the six channels of SAS. Also, in terms of heat channeling in a 1u chassis, the arrangement of the CPUs and RAM is unfortunate, as it creates a poorly ventilated tunnel that isolates CPU1 at the back of the chassis. On my 1u, there is only a passive vent outlet there, and cpu2 gets all the cooling from the fan bridge. This benefits in a nearly 20 c temperature difference on the two CPUs. I have not figured out how to get them in line with each other on temps. YMMV, but you may take into account a 2u for ventilation if absolutely nothing else. checked with help on BIOS version. Mine came with 0902 shipped (BIOS version is the final four digit cluster immediately after your serial quantity on the tiny sticker subsequent the back panel), supported Xeon 5620 out of the box, which I had read may well not be the case

Low cost and small. Drivers CD will not autorun on Windows 7 producing it difficult to come across what has to be installed and what doesn't.After 1 month getting utilized my pc would show an intermittent power on problem. From time to time it would startup, and at times it would not. The issue became increasingly far more frequent. I had to disconnect some USB devices, Ethernet cable and/or open the chassis to disconnect and reconnect the cables. Again, from time to time it worked, but sometimes it didn't. I filed a RMA request on www.asus.com on 2010-02-07 at 11ᛡᚹ PM (ID: WTM20100207944484434). An automatic message informed that I really should receive a feedback after 48 h, but nothing at all so far (today is 2010-02-10). Somehow I have the feeling that sending this product back and getting a replacement will be troublesome.

*Price*ATX form factor*No unfixable problems so far*You can output sound by means of a video card with HDMI *Pins were (somehow) bent in spite of socket caps- fixed it with a pair of tweezers*Low quantity of expansion slots I use this with two E5520s to do virtualization work under Server 2008 Hyper-V. If you're searching for a heatsink, I use the Intel BXSTS100A and it's ideal (snug) fit. Won't operate for the X series, but, with these you would most likely use a additional pricey board anyway.Make positive to choose precisely what you want to use with this board beforehand - with only 1 PCI slot and no PCIe your alternatives will be restricted. You will need a 24pin and 4pin connectors - assure that your PSU can deal with that, and if necessary get a double molex to four pin adapter (a 4pin PCIe power adapter will not function; wrong voltage)

Value. Definetely one particular of the lower end dual lga1366 sockets. ATX form aspect is good. Most other dual lga1366 boards are not atx. attempting to jam both processors on an atx case makes almost everything a tight fit. this board is cramped. not a lot as far as expansion slots are concerned. the quantity of internal and external connectors leaves a thing to be desired. But then once again, this is a lower finish board, so i guess you can't have your cake and consume it also. The cramped nature of this board makes discovering a very good thermal solution hard. (see other thoughts below) No overclocking skills, but that's to be expected from a server board. There are a handful of cpu fan and heatsink combos here on newegg, but they aren't the greatest. I was capable to get the Cooler Master Hyper212 to fit with the associated bracket (RR-ACC-1366-GP LGA 1366 Bracket Set) and a trip to the local hardware retailer for some machine screws. (search the extreme overclocking forums for z8na for a much more comprehensive explanation and some pics) A single point to note, that HSF will only work if you have low profile heat spreaders on your RAM. If the heat spreaders on your RAM extend above the DIMM, you're out of luck. Also, 1 of the copper heat pipes pushes up against the heat spreader slightly. It only moves about a millimeter, so i wasn't also concerned with it. Seriously even though, somebody needs to come up with a better thermal resolution to this board.

If you want a low cost dual nehalem xeon workstation, this is the way to go. ATX type factor means I can use my old ATX case with no problems. Also the motherboard wants only a single 8-pin CPU core voltage energy connector in addition to the regular 24pin connector, which means I can use my PCP&C 750 silencer quad to run a dual cpu machine. I don't have to deal with SSI-xxx, EATX, and so forth etc as a result saving a lot of dollars. Points appear nicely placed on the motherboard offered an ATX type factor, and the inclusion of the PCIe16x2 slot is a plus. I'm utilizing my old 8800 Ultra on my create. The PCIe16 slot however lacks a retention clip. I didn't have any difficulties utilizing my 8800 ultra though. Can use regular DDR3 memory. Server memory not required. As a different reviewer had mentioned, spacing is tight. I'm employing the Dynatron T667 heatsink+fan to cool the CPUs. There'r no obvious orientations for the coolers. Compromise is essential, and at the moment I have hot air blowing more than one particular of my memory DIMMs. No on board audio, but I'm utilizing an old PCI sound card for that. Not actually a con but the board doesn't have a PATA port. I wanted to use an old PATA CD drive but couldn't do so. All in all an outstanding board for those seeking much more cores for low cost.-Dual Xeon E5520-Dynatron T667 heasink+fan
