I used a new 550 on a bike trip through the Pyrenees this fall and relied on it to find the way. It did have a number of the hotels I stayed at and really helped in the little towns with winding streets. You have to turn down the illumination to 50% to get just 4 hours of battery life. I was running at 30% to be able to get 6 hours of usage per day. Buy a second battery and make sure it is charged. |

I have to give this GPS a 5 for value in comparison to a Motorcycle specific Zumo at over twice the price. The rest of the features are adequate or better. Garmin quality will insure years of trouble free service. I've had many GPS's of different brands so this I'm sure of. Not a steal by any means as far as what I pauid from Tiger but it was fair and arrived promptly |

I got this after having a Tom Tom. I wanted a GPS that had a few more features but was still in a cost-effective range. So far, I can't say that it has found places more than getting me lost or sidetracked. I have downloaded the new software and have the attachment that detects traffic problems. The voice options work well. The problems are several that are important: I live in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, so this is a large city area. The GPS can't find some streets that are 2-3 years old. New expressways are not listed. I went to Austin and it didn't "find" that I was on a major expressway that had been up for 4 years. It showed that I was in a field. Sometimes when I come home or go across the metroplex, it will tell me to get off. Imagine my surprise when it takes me off and then tells me to get back on the highway. I have then lost valuable time. It gets me lost frequently and cannot find spellings of addresses. |

I bought this a few weeks ago for my Motorcycle, just in case I need to find my way somewhere. It's performance has been flawless once I downloaded and installed the free map update from Garmin. I like the database of points of interest, very functional and very quick. The ability to set multiple destinations at one time is also a very nice feature. This unit is also considered waterproof, so very nice for a motorcycle. |

Although this Garmin 550 GPS is helpful, I find that having to download new maps every year is costly. I did not update my GPS this year and the unit makes errors. It tells me to make lefts when there are no streets to go into and to make emmediate U turns when it's illegal to make U turns in most of the the main roads in NY. Also I had to replace the car charger for pieces of the male prong got stuck into my car charger and it cost me quite a bit to fix that problem. Lastly I wrote to Garmin about the incident and they ignored my letter. |
I did a little shopping around before I bought my unit because I wanted something that would have superb driving features such as re-routing,detour,speaking road names but also would be good for biking, hiking and geo-caching. This is the one.
