Cons: -Awful RMA process

Pros: -Quiet-No data loss when failed
Comment:
Drive failed after ~16 months on very light and infrequent usage. I've RMA-ed drives before and I've never had any problems but Hitachi RMA is in a league of its own. No advanced RMA (they won't ship a replacement before receiving the defective drive). They require drive be shipped in approved packaging. Luckily, I had the original packaging the drive came in. I shipped the drive on November 17th. Canada Post is showing they received it on November 24th. Today is December 9th and their RMA page is still showing they haven't received the drive. I'm still trying to sort this out with them but it doesn't look like I'll be getting a replacement any time soon. I'd stay away from any Hitachi drive just because I might have to use their RMA and it's just not worth the hassle. Did I mention it takes them a couple of days to respond to e-mail?

Pros: SATA2, 16 MB cache, 7200rpm, price.

As indicated above in the strengths, this drive is also quiet and does not make much noise. With a 3.5 in to 5.25 in bay converter, you can mount this hdd in a dvd-rom drive bay as a second hdd to acting as a storage for my htpc. For $50, and with the standard 3 years warranty, a very good purchase.

Cons: didn't find any yet

Pros: Quiet, didn't cost much, performance is similar if not better than competition
Comment:
This is the very first 500gb hard drive to hit the market... EVER, so when Seagate and WD were sleeping they brought this badboy out back in like 2003 so if you want a good solid 500gb HDD, look no further. SATA 2 3gbs transfers etc. Great dive, I'm currently running WINDOWS 7 RTM on it and it's sweet.

Great drive for the price paid. Easy to setup and use. Fast data transfer rates, great for media applications. Would purchase this drive again without hesitation. Better than the seagates drives I have installed beside it. Very reliable.

The last HDD I bought was back in 2007, a Seagate 7200.10 320GB. I bought this to use with a drive enclosure to backup my system and media, and so far it's been working splendidly. I hear a lot of bad rap about this drive's reliability, but it seems to work just fine for a lot of people, including me. Only thing I'm dissatisfied with is me throwing away the packaging and the UPC code so I can't redeem my $10 rebate.

Cons: None so far....

Pros: Quiet, reasonably fast, cheap.
Comment:
Got this drive just to boost the storage capacity a bit on our media computer, and given the low cost(same price as currently available 80GB drives!), I had to jump at it.We've now got three Hitachi drives, and the one thing I noticed right away, is that they're all rather quiet, which is definitely a good thing. This drive is also reasonably speedy, although the 1TB version of this drive benchmarks about 12MB/sec. faster. The longevity on these drives remains to be seen, since all our Hitachis are fairly recent purchases, but since two of them are pretty much just for the occasional backups, they should be good for a while, whereas this particular drive will see a lot more use, so hopefully it's up to the task. Either way, a standard 3yr. warranty is ok, so if you need some reasonably fast, cheap hard drive space, this seems to be a good choice.

Pros: Fast, Quiet, Reliable (haven't had one die yet, and most important COOL!
Comment:
I got this drive instead of the 1TB hitachi due to the 1TB being very loud during read and writing times. I can't stand having loud grinding drives in my computers... Another nice thing about this drive is that it runs cool like 25C, unlike similar seagate drives that run up to 32C. Helps keep ambient temperature down This review was modfied by poster @ 09-09-09 05:16 PM

I picked one up on the weekly sale for $49 and can honestly say I'm not dissapointed. This is the first brand new Deskstar drive I have owned. It seems to be at least as quiet as the 80GB Samsung it replaced, and there were no problems with installation. Realistically, this is a great drive for the $$$, and I would recommend it to anyone.

Cons: no advanced replacement option like wd or seagate, lack of sata 1 jumper for external usb2 enclosures.

Pros: It’s quiet, fast, and runs fairly cool.
Comment:
This is the first time I bought a Hitachi and I was able to get it on sale. I decided to take a chance and buy this drive after having a lot of problems with a seagate 500gb that I bought just last year. So far I have been pleased with it. It’s quiet, fast, though not as fast as the seagate, runs fairly cool. Windows xp sp3 recognized and formatted it without problems. There are two things that you should be aware of. First, you will have to download the Hitachi utility to change this drive to a sata 1 instead of the default sata if you run into problems with external usb2 enclosures as it doesn’t have a jumper like seagate or wd to do this. Also, I wish Hitachi did have an advanced replacement option like wd or seagate.

Cons: Probably not the highest-performing drive available500GB is getting a little cramped these days (lol)

Pros: Virtually silentReliable, so farPrice
Comment:
I bought this drive about 6 months ago, and it has been working flawlessly and quietly. I am using this in my main PC with Linux and Windows XP SP3 (though the actual OSes are stored on another drive). Some have said that XP has trouble with this drive, but the actual drive is not the issue there. It works perfectly with no need for additional drivers, assuming that the BIOS supports it.With only a 16-MB cache and lacking NCQ, this may not be the fastest drive on the market -- but it's fast enough for desktop use. I have noticed no unusual slowness or anything of the sort, though my usage is limited to "light use": browsing, e-mail, music, watching videos/movies etc. I'm not running server apps here. If you're buying a drive for a server and/or you run apps where I/O performance is critical, you might want to look elsewhere. This drive is the quietest desktop drive I have ever owned. During seeks it is nearly inaudible, and the rest of the time it *is* inaudible for all practical purposes. There are no unusual clicks or anything of the sort as has been reported for certain other drives. This drive -- or a larger version of it, provided that it has similar acoustics -- should be excellent for HTPC, office, or general home use. The current price of $40 after rebate is excellent if you don't need a lot of capacity.

Cons: more noisy than WD green 500GB, more noisy than Seagate 500GB, but still quiet.

Pros: quiet when operation, no writting sound unlike WD
Comment:
i bought 2 drives and i would recommand it to anyone who needs a hard drive. This hard drive makes no noise when writting, however, it does makes noise hearable only if you stay within 1 meter of the computer. I want a silent PC, it can not be as silent as the wall.

Pros: QuietDirt cheapGood transfer rates
Comment:
Put this in my XP SP3 machine as the OS drive and it recognized and formatted it no problem despite what some posts I've read said. This drive is by far quieter than any Seagate I've owned and it's comparable to my Western Digital 320G AAKS SE16 drive. Kind of hard to compare as the Hitachi is installed in a much quieter computer, so the fans drown a lot of the noise on the computer I have the SE16 installed.Did a benchmark with HD Tune and it did well in everything except Access time.So far, very happy with my purchase, especially considering the price. I tend to prefer WD for reliability and this is my first experience with Hitachi, so fingers crossed. This review was modfied by poster @ 08-25-09 11:49 PM

I bought this hard drive for my HTPC and it's pretty good. It runs pretty quiet, and has decent performance. Since it's not like a raptor drive, I don't expect it to be too quick in performance, but again, it is decent for what it is.
