Good size and weight. So significantly nicer to hold and carry then my 1000H. Awesome battery life. I upgraded to Windows 7 House Premium from Starter and doubled the ram and put in an SSD drive. Nonetheless acquiring about 9 hours with out messing with energy options. Swapping the HDD on the seashell models is not effortless. You have to remove the keyboard. Sadly you have to void the warranty to do it. Only thing I miss about the 1000H I really like netbooks. Great for school and travel.

Extended battery lifeDual core cpuAmazing keyboard With a higher screen resolution it could become my key laptop (but the 1024 x 600 is perfectly usable). In ubuntu make confident to disable "Enable mouse clicks with touchpad" in "Mouse Preferences / Touchpad" because bumping the touchpad whilst typing will drive you crazy. I installed stock ubuntu 11.04 when I got it and every thing has worked perfectly. The touchpad seems to operate far better than most netbooks, but I mainly use my mini mouse. It isn't very as quickly as my quad core desktop, but it is very zippy for a netbook, specifically for a single with a 5400rpm really hard drive. The battery is amazing. I turn off most power saving attributes so that the screen runs at complete brightness, disks don't idle, and it lasts me 6 hours easy. The greatest point holding me back from employing my other laptop frequently was the keyboard and this keyboard is just amazing. I can kind practically as speedily as on my natural keyboard and I'm finding quicker.I was thinking of upgrading it to 2 gigs of ram, but even when operating eclipse and qt-creator at the identical time I am making use of significantly less than 700 megs of the gig that it shipped with.Just put, it's the greatest laptop, let alone netbook that I have ever owned.

I would recommend this for the persons that are willing to upgrade the memory and difficult drive. Operates considerably quicker/better with the mem/disk upgrades. The SSD was a pain to upgrade even though.

The highlight of this netbook is the sweet tiny atom n550 dual core processor that this packs. Compared to my older Acer Aod532h netbook which utilizes an n450 processor, this netbook is a massive step above that. I can now very easily stream 720p videos from youtube and even some 1080p videos. I also appreciate how there is a overall performance toggle button that makes it possible for you to adjust the general overall performance of the netbook from "Super Efficiency" to "Power-Saving". The battery life is also great as expected from an ASUS netbook. I'm uncertain how considerably RAM this netbook supports but Important's website indicates that there are 2 RAM slots in this netbook which is surprisingly excellent to me. The matte screen on this netbook doesn't appear to provide as vibrant a image as a glossy screen. Also, the speakers do have a tendency to crack at occasions when lowering and growing the volume when I watch a streamed Divx video. There is bloatware per usual but that was expected. I would've loved far more colors to be offered for this model other than black, red, and blue. General, I'm really satisfied possessing received this as a birthday present.

In reference to the discontinued Model 1001P that I purchased in march 2010. Transportable and sturdy. I added another gig of RAM. No straightforward task. Monitor died inside 1 year. Requesting RMA from ASUS. Let's see how that goes since it's still beneath warranty. ASUS is usually a great brand. I'm disappointed that the screen went out so quickly. Manufacturer Response:Dear Valued Client,We sincerely apologize for the issue you are experiencing with the show on this netbook. The unit booted up fine... had a bit of bloated application but practically nothing from the ordinary. When all the bloated computer software was taken off rightly.. the program ran beautifully. I do have to say although you really should attempt to upgrade to one more gigabyte of ram whenever you get the likelihood.. thats what I program on performing at some point. When I just received the item I realized that there was a front panel defect, I speedily called New Egg Customer service and had a RMA sent out.. I am presently nonetheless waiting for the RMA to be delivered to CA ( Shipped Unit 21st.. and its now the 27th). This doesn't seem to be new eggs issue though appears more like a defect from the manufacturer itself.. which happens each and every once in awhile. I will re edit this comment after I've really had the unit for a bit of time.. I will continue to give this netbook a 5 star due to the fact, this is not hunting like a new egg issue.

I have a really like hate connection with the touch pad. It is pretty sensitive thats beneficial as long as I'm working with the touchpad. Like several have stated the touch pad gets in the way when typing. Efficiency is fair. I'm dual booting among windows and Ubuntu. I want they would give realistic numbers on battery life. I get around 6-7 hours. This is with no battery saving capabilities enabled. The touch pad. Disabling the tap to click function might be crucial. I would consider that a dual core 1.five ghz would have more umph then what this laptop has. The "Express gate" was the 1st point to get disabled. This is my very first netbook so adjusting to the ten" screen is going to take awhile. There is so substantially extra scrolling compared to a laptop. On the other hand it is so portable. Even in its case it is no larger then the books I carry with it.

In concur with all the positive reviews on this netbook except for three problems that I've given that corrected. Situation 1- I blew away Win 7 Starter and installed Win 7 Pro 32 bit. Also, I loaded the ClassicShell utility v2.9.2 so the Start off menu and folders have the classic appearance I liked with Win XP Pro. The utility can be found at classicview.sourceforge.netIssue 2 - The touchpad sucks. I tried the two driver versions from the ASUS download web site and the ELAN stack was slightly better but not by much. The touchpad does not slide smoothly; the cursor either doesn't move, skips or it jumps all over the screen. Created no distinction if I was on battery power or plugged in. I have two old Thinkpad laptops and those touchpads glide and slide incredibly smoothly. So, I solved this difficulty with the Logitech V470 Blue three Buttons Tilt Wheel Cordless Laser Notebook Mouse for Bluetooth. NewEgg Item#: N82E16826104084 is เ total but you can find them less expensive elsewhere. I located reconditioned ones at a single of those pc surplus web-sites for a total of ษ. It's like new devoid of the box. Issue 3 - Onboard Bluetooth and Win7 Pro 32 bit don't play nicely together. The Logitech BT mouse worked fine regardless of whatever BT stack I installed. Nonetheless, my two Motorola BT headsets (model H500 & H560) wouldn't connect at all. I attempted every BT stack out there; Win7 BT stack, ASUS BT drivers, Broadcom BT wizard and many versions of BlueSoleil. Nothing at all worked. If you go to the Win7 device compatibility internet site the Logitech mouse is there but they only list one BT headset; the Plantronics model 690. So, I solved this problem with the Cirago BTA-3210 USB 2. Micro Bluetooth Dongle assistance Bluetooth 2.1 NewEgg Item#: N82E16833242001. I copied the install disc to a USB thumb drive, disabled the ASUS BT device in the BIOS and installed the Cirago BT dongle. All my BT devices connected and now work perfectly. Overall, I nonetheless like this netbook even though I gave it 4 balls out of 5. If you don't thoughts tinkering to solve the several concerns get a single. Otherwise, keep hunting.

I compared this to the 1015PN, which is the other netbook from ASUS with the new dual-core atom cpu. In the finish I picked this one since it doesn't have nvidia ion graphics and hence has A lot superior battery life. Unless you actually want to play games or watch HD video on an external monitor, you're greater off with this netbook simply because you'll save cash and get about double the battery life. I know with the 1015PN you can turn the nvidia ion graphics off to save power, but 1) switching demands a reboot (unless you upgrade from Windows 7 starter) and two) why pay the further funds if I'm just going to leave it off all the time. This netbook can do hulu on regular def, which is all you really need to have for this screen size. This fees much more than netbooks with older atom cpu's. I took a leap of faith that this new dual-core atom processor is seriously that much better. Hopefully, it will make using this netbook that much a lot more pleasant and will make it final a year or so longer. But it's also attainable that I just wasted my funds. A lot of people are saying lately that netbooks are dead, but my wife is a grad student and she demands one thing with a genuine keyboard. A sensible phone or an iPad just wont work for her. We spent a lengthy time attempting out diverse keyboards in stores and the new ASUS keyboards had been undoubtedly the finest. I understand this is a individual selection, but we each loved how the keys are rounded with spaces in among. Also, the matte surfaces, touchpad, webcam cover and overall styling are quite nicely completed.

Dual-core, good battery life, and battery saving alternatives in Linux. Streaming a 720p film from the internet was choppy, but it appeared smooth when it was coming off the disk and this machine is not made for that, so if you want streaming hd video appear at the 1015PN in spite of its lower battery life. VGA port is close sufficient to third USB port that even slightly bulky usb devices might be blocked if you have a monitor or projector plugged in.Mousepad size, listed as a function, is essentially annoying. Like an individual else I'm coming from a 1000h, who's touchpad size never bothered me and manages to keep far sufficient away from the left side of the space bar for typing without accidentally tapping the touchpad. This touchpad is also level with the leading of the keys and nearly borderless with the space bar. Disabling tap-click is a remedy I favor not to use.Another listed function is the keyboard but I locate I can hit the edge of a important and press it till I hit the situation(exposed between the keys) and the essential under no circumstances registers as pressed. Be on target.Final issue: the 1000h let you get to the hdd without having voiding the warranty, this does not. Had to update the bios to get my 2 gigs of ram operating(KVR1333D3SOǘGR), but considering that then it has been fine.Wireless in Linux: had to get the brcm80211 module for wireless, the wireless button does not work out of the box(or possibly at all), and immediately after a extended suspend the wireless no longer functions until restart(haven't tried something else, possibly reinserting the module is the only essential action). Battery in Linux: ᡂh. I did not locate any battery saving characteristics unavailable in Linux...working with a powersave governor, disabling bluetooth and such, and operating at minimum display brightness appear to be all that is needed. This series of Atom CPUs does not support the super-hybrid engine's(SHE) overclock and underclock from the Atom N270, so the kernel does not create the cpufv/SHE interface.

popped in 64-bit arch linux into this netbook and it performs wonderful! the new kde 4.6 (with its compositing effects in netbook mode) rocks in this machine. boot booster is also fairly sweet - it lets you bypass the BIOS initialization and jump straight into the boot loader. make positive you don't wipe the EFI partition of your disk if you want to hold boot booster function. no biggie if you do, just google on how to recreate the partition.webcam is extremely responsive. resolution is ok 黀x480) but the image good quality isn't that good under low lighting (it is comparable to the isight in macbook pro).this machine does not heat up at all, no matter how a lot compilation jobs you throw at it, not to mention compiling files using gcc is fairly quick in this netbook.played an H264 video with resolution 1280x544 in vlc and it runs very smooth. did notice some jitter when playing hulu in "hd" high quality but that was sort of expected for a netbook running hulu. i wanted to get a netbook with SSD but it is practically impossible to locate a netbook with one particular these days. will soon upgrade the disk with an SSD and ram to 2gb.battery life is not nearly as extended as 13 hours. minimum power draw i saw was about 8W and the battery can supply 63W for a single hour - that's at most eight hours. im certain utilizing SSD would support. still, eight hours is pretty impressive! had some trouble with wifi at initial but located the linux driver under "staging" category. the driver name is brcm80211 and it also calls for firmware files. i believe the package name was linux-firmware in arch repo or AUR.

Battery life, size, weight, temperature, speed No physical/external volume manage switch. This is my 1st netbook and it has swiftly turn into 1 of my favorite laptops/netbooks/desktops that I've owned. I don't play games that need big amounts resources anymore so this thing has a lot of resources to do what I will need it to: e mail, MS Workplace, and watch motion pictures. I cleaned out all the bloatware, added yet another gig of ram and disabled just about anything that runs in the background that I don't require. I also like Windows 7 Starter because it's lean and does precisely what I want it to do but nothing at all additional.

Smaller, light, effortless to type with. The n550 is effective sufficient for java applets I want to use. Fairly quiet and cool. Watching some flash video on my macbook will trigger it to get warm and heat up, not this small guy. You can feel the fan push out air but it can sit on my lap without having receiving hot. If you're not in 'power save mode' you only get about 7-8h of battery life. Which, if you're in linux you don't have access too. The touch to click on the touch pad can get in the way although typing. My knuckle will 'tap' the touch pad and click some random location which can trigger some issues. So I just disabled it. I reformatted and put win7 / linux on it. Everything worked out of the box linux wise. It uses a Broadcom 4727 wireless device for those who are curious. Initially I was going to go obtain a 2gb stick of ram but I'm going to hold off a bit mainly because so far it appears to be in a position to preserve up.

Windows comes with too considerably bloat and Express gate is not a valuable choice to me (Ubuntu loads in under a minute anyways). The first factor I did was wipe the HD and install Ubuntu 10.10, which works wonderful on this personal computer. It's almost as if Ubuntu was *made* to run on this factor. All the function keys function (volume, brightness, etc), energy saving attributes work great, and suspend/hibernate work flawlessly. I at present have the stock 1GB of ram installed, but am taking into consideration putting 2GB in. I'm also thinking about an SSD as it would make the suspend/hibernate work even quicker (currently resume from suspend takes about 10s and resume from hibernate is close to 30s).The keyboard is as great as you can anticipate from a unit this size. The appropriate shift important is a bit modest. Also, the touch pad works fairly well and Ubuntu takes advantage of its multi-touch choices ƒ and three finger tap works). The battery routinely gets about 10hrs between charges with default Ubuntu energy savings and moderate usage Ɠ or 4 firefox tabs open, playing music, etc...). Finally, it looks awesome. As with any netbook, the smaller keyboard and screen take some acquiring employed to. In the end it's a tradeoff between that and maximum mobility. Also, it's possibly a little bit heavier than other netbooks due to the larger battery, but once again - that's a tradeoff you undergo for a lot more battery life. The built-in speaker is awful. Also, I wish it came stock with 2GB, particularly at the present price point.

Very good Asus quality around. Matte finish on the outside and screen looks very good. Very good build quality for the keyboard. Runs very smoothly with XP (downgrade) and 2GB ram (upgrade). The dual core Atom with four threads works better than I expected (since everyone says netbooks are crap). This is my first portable computer experience, so I am not sure whether this is normal - the CPU reaches 70 C under load. None of my desktops ever reaches 70 C. My desktop Core i3 with 25% overclock only reached 50 C under load. Also, it is quite hard to change the hard drive for this one.Easily four stars, but not five.

Cons: Tiny, fragile charger plugBacklight bleed

Pros: Well RoundedGood performanceComfortable
Comment:
This netbook was an upgrade for me, replacing a two-year-old EEE 900 that was slow and tired. This netbook was immediately a treat, capable of good performance with Windows 7. The keyboard and screen were both larger than I was used to -- a compromise on size, but definitely more comfortable. I find myself having trouble getting used to the arrow key and right-shift key spacing, but nothing too problematic. One thing that seriously bugs me is the minuscule connector for plugging in the charge adapter. It seems fragile, and almost makes it impossible to consider using the book on your lap while it plugged in for charging. A big change over my old EEE is the sensitivity of the trackpad. After a couple of days of "break in", the new one is much more responsive in terms of contact pressure, though I'm sure I'll adjust. The result is a much lighter touch and clean response.I notice quite a bit of backlight bleed on the edges of a dark screen, though it is nearly imperceptible during normal use. Battery life is exceptional vs. my older netbook, which is an advertised benefit definitely welcome. Storage is ample at 250GB, pre-partitioned into boot and storage volumes which makes sense. The dual-core Atom keeps multi-tasking tolerable, if not blazingly fast. This is certainly a welcome replacement to my old Netbook, and goes a long way toward reducing the compromises that were necessary on first and second-generation units. I recommend this netbook for anybody in to market for this kind of device.
