Kanto YU5 Powered Bookshelf Speakers - Gloss Black
Cons:- Bass is lacking:Can they produce a lot of bass if cranked up? Yes. However, what matters is the relative amount, not absolute. Don't be fooled by the 5.25" woofers; for a complete sound, you really need a sub, trust me. Coming from (even a very cheap) 2.1 setup, you will miss the bass. If you've only ever had 2.0, maybe you won't mind, but I highly recommend (even a cheap) sub to help out. Make sure it can put out some decent volumes though, since the signal fed out by the sub-out port on the YU5's seems pretty weak.- Not totally consistentWith every other set of speakers or headphones I've had (both cheap and high quality) everything sounded roughly the same. I find these really do certain genres of music much better than others. I suppose this is a half full/half empty kind of comment to put in the "cons", but I just wish everything sounded as amazing as some of the songs I've heard through them, since it makes me know what they are capable of. - Something I can't quite put my finger onFurthermore, they take some getting used to/break in time (pick whichever you believe). The EQ (or something*) is a little different than anything else I've ever listened to (and I've heard lots of both cheap, and amazing multi thousand $ sets). They are definitely higher quality than my old set and I'm hearing details at a much higher level than before for sure.* It sounds like an EQ-able thing, but no adjustment stands out as really helping, so I have to assume that's not it. Don't let this worry you too much, it's pretty minor (especially after listening for a while) and only seems to show up with certain genres.- Remote has a piece inside that constitutes a noticeable portion of its total mass that is not properly attached and rattles around inside making it seem a little cheap where it would otherwise be fine if it was attached properly.- Remote is also the only way to change certain settings like the bass/treble and balance, so if you lose it, or don't have it with you at the moment, good luck ever changing those settings again. I'm not saying I would ever use controls on the back of the speaker on purpose if they existed, but if it was the only option, it would be a good one to have.

Pros:- Looks great- Sounds great (with some songs, I would say more like absolutely amazing)- Good value at $250- Remote control to command your speakers from a distance! Also, the viewing angle on the remote is fantastic (virtually 180 deg). I saw a review of the YUMI's complaining about needing to be quite straight on, but that is not the case here at all.- Lots of inputs (even the Bluetooth works great, if you're wondering)- Expandable with a sub (using sub-out RCA port)- Solid connection between passive & active speaker (I've had sets where this was flaky; it's not fun)
Comment:
Also, one final point that wasn't definitively a con or pro: placement makes a HUGE difference. I've had sets where you could point them out 45 deg, straight, or in 45 deg and almost not be able to tell the difference. If you move these 10 deg, you WILL hear it. I recommend not having more than about 30 deg between a line straight ahead, and a line drawn to the speakers. If this means moving them farther from you and/or closer together and/or toeing them in, try it - you will be rewarded.Overall these are great, but not mind-blowingly amazing by any stretch. I guess that's what thousand+ $ sets are for though.
