Cons:
Smartware software needs work - a bit buggy; Virtual CD (VCD) is a annoying.
Pros: Good design, speed, and encryption and is Quiet. Daisy chains with other FW800 drives well. Handy menu bar tool to mount, unmount, unlock, etc. Warranty period is great. |
Overall decent product. However, the WD Smartware software is a bit primitive and needs some work. It does however seem designed for the Mac. I found the software to work best when installed by an Administrator (on a multi-user machine); don't just authenticate as an Admin. The backups software only backs up a user(s) home folder, you can not set alternative sources. The hardware encryption feature is great to have, but WD has a clumsy implementation: it uses a virtual CD (VCD) that needs to be unmounted (perhaps when the drive is first powered on). Once un-mounted (easy to do) it stays away.
