Cons: Can be a bit of a hassle to get set up

Pros: solid OS, seems to work well
Comment:
I bought this the other day and so far it's pretty good, takes a while to set up (maybe because I think reading instructions is for wussies) most of the difficulty I've run in to has been getting it to play nice with my router. The console is forever reporting that it can't verify this that or the other thing, but it all works.I'm currently trying to install a RAID card just for the extra SATA ports, we'll have to wait and see how that turns out, but the software for it seems to have installed without issue.I'm leaving this one at three stars because I'm not impressed by any aspect of it, it works, but it's not the bees knees.

I travel for extended periods and need access to my PC's for work. Thought I would have to go to a Linux VPN server or something similar. WHS was the answer to SO many things I was looking for. I've had 3 computer crashes (2 of us work from home and need 24X7 computer access) in past 1.5 yrs. WHS gives us reliable backups on top of RAID configs, provides photo sharing for family & friends AND is a VPN server that I can access from anywhere and then connect to my computers and run all of my traffic through (with proper config).

Does what it says and does it well. Easy to set up and it's pretty well just set and forget. The automated backups and remote access make it worth the price alone. Add-Ins are available from other sources to expand its possibilities even further. A great product!

This is actually one of the better pieces of software from Microsoft. It enables those without power user ability, the functionality of a Windows Server 2003 environment. I currently have it set up as backup storage and as multimedia storage. It is great to be able to stream movies to the X-Box out in the family room. I would recommend it to all. Very Impressive.

I have a 1.5 TB Server, it works like a charm. I could never share between my other computers now it's on and popin'. Wish I'd had a 64 bit unit, it's still fast & secure. If you have more then 2 computers you need this now.

WHS seems to a product that makes it easy for those with no Server OS background to jump right in and use this great product without any trouble at all. With great features like Auto Backups for all connected PC's, expandable features through third party Add-Ins and it's capability to integrate into your home to serve out all your files from one safe place to all connected PC's, this things is a steal for an OS that seeks to make Networking in a small setting easy and safe. If you're looking to expand your network safeley and reliably, choose this OS then add the other ''Add-ins'' that can expnad the OS's capabilies free of charge; Clamwin, Disk utilities & an Add-in that allows you to control WHS advanced features via the OS's desktop. Again, this is a great product with tons of cool features that will make a novice user look like a genius, thanks to Microsofts abiblity to expand the Server platform to everyone.

i bought this as a replacement for a trial version available directly from ms. ms will not sell the software directly but provides a 30 day free trial. upon re-installing the software, it erased everythng i has stored on the trial version even though i was assured by ms this would not happen. i lost years of important documents and family photos.

I bought the server because of the auto backup. It is very easy to set up and works very well. I got a barebones system from here and had it going in a few hours. Still learning. I would advise anybody who has more than one computer in their home to get this system.

My first build of a server. Comes with 4 discs. It is a little confusing as to what one does with which one in what order and why. Those who have no problem likely were familiar with previous server software. Once rolling, it is a very nice automatic backup system. I have sent for the Dummies tomb on this system before I try to handle sharing files.

This OS is rather cool, and provides (beyond the normal Home Networking available with other MS OS's) some worthwhile features not otherwise available. The problems with connectivity experienced with others did not occur with my installation. Additionally, although the WHS documentation states this OS is strictly hard-wire (no wireless ability) I found that to be not the case. WHS hooked up both hard-wire and wireless. However, I suspect that by using hardwire from the router that security is enhanced. Problem with recognizing large HD's depends on the motherboard being able to recongnze 48-bit LBA. Otherwise, the motherboard limits the ability of WHS to utilize all of the larger drives. Some had problems with the connectivity disk not loading on the client computers. That can be overcome with using the files from the main WH Server load disk (3-disks come with WHS) Bottom line, it's well worth the price. Not bad for a C-note.

I bought Home Server with the intent of just trying out the OS. I currently run several systems with many different OS's in my house and my own DNS (Server 2008 Standard Edition). Now for anyone who wants to be able to access their Music, Pictures, and Video's from on central location, this is your OS. It can be installed on any system, so if you have an old at least 1Ghz processor and 512Mbs RAM you can install this OS on it. Add a good sized or a couple of HDD's and you just access the Home server from you other computers and start uploading the files to it. Then turn on any computer attached to the Server, including X box 360 and other devices and you can stream you files over your network to those devices. Its simple, very easy to install and understand, and if you get the option from you I S P provider, you can access your files from over the internet anywhere in the world. OS is built off the Server 2003 OS with an overlay of the Home server

I bought this product mostly to keep automatic backups of the 3 PC's in my home. I installed it to a computer that I build from a hodge podge of spare parts and a new case. The software installed flawlessly on all computers and once I figured out some of the terminology I was able to set up all computers for auto backup. It has other features as well such as remote access but I haven't tried that yet. This product is well worth the money if you are paranoid about losing your photos, videos and other data on multiple machines like I am.

I wasted 100 bucks on this junk. It seemed nice after installation. Then It wouldn't even connect to the internet to register and activate. It could not find the network to connect to my other 4 computers. When I tried to install the connect software on other computers, they could not find the server.I realize that it may be the lack of ''drivers'' in this OEM version that is the problem. I tied to find drivers at microsoft, forget that. I even downloaded the trial version from microsoft, that didn't work any better. I finally reinstalled good old XP Media Center on the computer...It works fine. I will use XP and my own network connections to access the files on my various computers. XP (any version) is the best operating system that microsoft has ever invented.

I got exactly what I was expecting. I am pleased with this product as it operates just as it was advertised. The installation was flawless and backup all my systems is automatic. However, I do wish Microsoft allowed more than ten connections. I will definitely buy again if necessary.

No problems whatsoever with purchase, delivery, install, or operation. On an old Dell GX260 1.5GB Ram, two 250GB IDE HDD's internal with a 500GB externall HDD. It took the 2 internal HDD's and combined them then put a small partition on for the OS and left the rest for storage. Great reporting features. I am a computer technician with over 10 years experience and have run all flavours of MS servers and for home use this is the best so far. I highly recommend it.

This is an excellent product. Installs very easily. One minor issue is with its inability to level the storage between the various hard drives (it fiils one up before using the next).

I've run Windows Server 2000, 2003, and 2008 at home as well as Windows XP as a simple file server. WHS is by far the best system I've used at home. Taking care of the backups automatically is a HUGE time saver and that alone makes the product worth the money.

WHS is a reliable and fairly easy to use home server. Microsoft did a good job of making it work on a home network. After using Windows Server 2003, it is baffling when unit doesn't respond the same to commands. This is due to WHS being whole controlled by remote desktop connection. (It doesn't like you to work from Server desktop.) WHS is a modified, homenized version of Windows Server 2003. Good price and value
