I purrchased a Synology diskstation 1010+ earlier for my office and it is undertaking fantastic with raid 5 configurartion. It is operating effortlessly and I like the active directory setup and other characteristics. I decied to but the 1511+, it has difficulty recognizing one of ther Western Digital Difficult Drive and it fails to load up. I went on the web and filled the NEWEGG RMA type with replacement. It got approved on online less than 5 minute. I mailed the unit on Monday. Newegg recieved on Friday and with in half hour or their recepit of the merchandise, they have issued my replacement. I am waiting for it I have a good knowledge with Synology solution, this failure could be due to challenging drive or could be due to defective Diskstation unit????? waiting for Replacement

Uncomplicated setup. Do not have to update BIOS to run 2TB Seagate Enterprise drives suitable out of the box. Rapid and really quiet with 5 drives installed. The Hybrid Raid that Synology presents in addition to all other common Raids is like Raid 5 but you can swap in larger drives (one at any time) in the future without having disrupting the system. This makes it extremely prepared for future expansion with out getting to get an all-new NAS. Extremely clever. None to speak of. It does the job specifically as you expect it. Like other NAS, please make sure you read the manufacturer's list of compatible drives on their web site. The so-named "green" drives perhaps affordable, but they can trigger all kinds of headaches with NAS (including causing the RAID to regularly believe a disk has failed and endlessly rebuilding the array). DON'T BE A CHEAPSKATE!! Invest in your backup data. Otherwise what's the point. Buy only Enterprise drives from Seagate or equivalent. Yes they are more costly, but do you genuinely want to trust multi-terrabytes of your information to anything significantly less just to save a few bucks?

Efficiency is great, low power, extremely simple to use. Root access is not a dilemma, works excellent with almost everything. Rock solid replacement for my homebuilt WHSv1. SHR or Synology Hybrid RAID has some particulars that are not obvious. Documentation is lacking in this area. Cannot just begin with 2 drives and expand to five all in one particular volume. Manufacturer Response:GreetingsThanks for your feedback with the DS1511+ delivering the performance and solid replacement for your WHSv1 Server - about the SHR, the documentation and webinar can be identified at this linkhttp://www.synology.com/us/SHRWhen you wish to expand from two-disk to 5-disk SHR - just pick the volume that is your 2-disk array, click manage, and start out the volume expansion wizard. The wizard will let you to expand your 2-disk volume up to all unallocated disks inside the DiskStation. Hope this helps, and have a fantastic day. Synology Assistance Team

This box has tons of features and is fairly simple to configure for a residence network enviroment. I only wish i had bought it earlier. Quiet, quick and the Raid 6 setup is solid. Plus i can expand it up to 15 drives with out rebuildng the raid. 3TB are not low cost sufficient to justify shopping for however

The unit is nicely built and uncomplicated to operate. Installed five Samsung F4 2.0TB drives in the unit, all produced in 01񳏋 so no issues about firmware difficulties with the F4 and S.M.A.R.T.Reasonably quiet, sits subsequent to my keyboard on my desk and you will typically forget about it except when the drives spin up from sleeping. The unit is pricey, assistance, though I haven't dealt with them directly, does not appear to respond promptly on their forums to issues other users have skilled such as loss of a volume due to disk failures or through the rebuilding of RAID, which leaves me a bit concerned. NAS is not a backup remedy, so do not preserve your data on this device if you value it. If the volume craps out, you could shed permanent data. Therefore, make certain you have a program in place to backup the data on your NAS to.

Super effortless setup - specially with Synology Hybrid Raid. This will automatically optimize the volumes to give you 1 drive of redundant storage (it fundamentally combines raid 1 and raid 5) - even if they are distinct size drives. Plus I can add two 510s later for 15 drive bays and 45 TB of storage if I actually wanted to! Not Synology's fault but it has some quirks if you want to go with the "green" drives from WD or Samsung and you may well require to configure/update firmware on those drives with your Pc prior to you put them in the Synology box. 2TB drives are absolutely the sweet spot appropriate now. 3TB sounds cool but if you don't need it then you absolutely ought to not pay the premium ideal now.

Does virtually everything. You can fairly a lot do any RAID you want, and Synology has their own Hybrid RAID which lets you a lot more freely mix and match drives. In my case I was loading it up with 5 matching 2TB drives, so I just did RAID five. It has a ton of characteristics besides just being a file server if you want it. Want a mail server? Completed. Want a net server? Done. Want to access files more than the internet with FTP and/or HTTP? Done. You want to do torrents or a NZB downloader? Accomplished. You don't like their download manager and want to use somebody elses program like SABnzbd? No difficulty, you can do that.Go check out the Synology website and test drive the DSM interface, it's pretty slick and there's a existing beta out that looks to boost issues like the download manager.Synology has an active on the internet forum and the business provides great support. I've noticed them offer you to function on someone's volume both by remoting in and providing to function on it if you send them the drives. Genuinely only con is the cost. My 1st thought was acquiring a 411j, but the speeds are slower than I'd like, so I was leaning towards a 411+. I decided to just cough up a lung and get the 1511 mainly because I can add one more 10 drives if I want. Oh sure, it won't be cheap to do that, but at least I have that selection. The 411+ can sort of be expanded, but for starters when I attempted looking for the expansion bay for the 411+, I couldn't come across any in America online, I finally found 1 in Canada.A minor con, but hasn't been a biggie, was this does make a little bit of fan noise. I noticed at first, but I got utilized to it promptly. It's not a big deal, but it's just not silent. Fundamentally, you can spend half as considerably dollars and create your own decent program if you want. 1 of the factors I considered was putting together a ZFS system. But a friend raved about his 1010+ and going this route, I saved the headache of attempting to configure a system and understanding I was going to get wonderful support.

This is a very good NAS. I've had a few Synology units now and for the money, Synology has been very reliable for me. Their support isn't the quickest to respond, but the hardware I highly recommend. No license fees, free software, an excellent alternative for a small server in a small business situation, or backup alternative. If it was cheaper, it would get 5 stars from me.

I have a number of HP Media Servers and have built a Windows Household Server as well. The Synology DS1511+ is flat out higher performance than all of the Windows boxes. I get about 74MB/sec by means of on file copy ƕGB, 400 files) on a 1Gb Ethernet. The fastest I have gotten on my Windows House Servers is about 50MB/sec - and this includes my custom develop with a quick processor, etc (my old gaming machine) and a clean install.Deployment was incredibly uncomplicated. I also added 2G of RAM (Kingston 2GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Laptop Memory Model KVR800D2SOǘGR) and 5 WD 2TB Green disks. Plugged it in, ran the installer on the desktop, and installed the newest software program. About 10 mins later, I was configuring the box. Formatting the disks and setting up the RAID took some time as generally. Given that then, has worked flawlessly. The only con is my only experiment with 802.3ad - which the ability to team 2 1Gb Ethernet together so you get 2Gb ethernet. I produced this work using an HP Procurve Switch (HP ProCurve J9450A#ABA 10럼񲿘Mbps Switch 24), enabled Teaming on the Synology box, and on my desktop (which has 2 ethernet). I got over 120MB/sec via but I also lost the capacity to see the drive on Network Neighborhood (Win7). It is incredibly handy for drag and drop to see the drive/foldrs in Network Neighborhood. You can also put a shortcut on the desktop. So, I disabled the 802.3ad 1TB bonding. This is not a big con. This is nonetheless 50% faster than my Windows Household Servers and nearly maxes out a 1Gb ethernet. I am quite pleased with the Synology.I purchased all these items on Newegg.

Comment:
The first brand I was thinking when I need a NAS was Drobo but I heard some mixed reviews from users. So, I do some more research and found Synology. After that, I was torn between this model and the DS411+. Ultimately, the fact that I can expand later with the 2 DX511 units (add 5 more HDDs for each DX511) was the deciding factor for the DS1511+. I filled the 5 bays with 4 Samsung F4 2TB and 1 WD Green 2TB. Be sure to check Synology's website for compatibility. The NAS recognize all the drives and format it to RAID 6.I can do almost everything (media station, iTunes server, FTP, web server...). It is pretty much one of the best computer hardware on my house. Highly recommended!

Cons: - For reasons of cost (I assume) Synology has chosen to go with Plastic Trays instead of the usual metal ones. - Trays can no longer be locked (with key). Not a problem in a home environment, but in a commercial environment, this could be an issue.

Pros: -Super fast-Easy to setup-Expandable to 15 bays (with DX510 units)-Dual Gigabit interface allow link aggregation-Synology 3 Year warranty-One of the nicest user interfaces of any NAS-Has all sorts of servers integrated out of the box (including FTP, Web (incl.PHP/MySQL), NFS, iTunes, DLNA Media server), and even has a very nice torrent client
Comment:
I've had various NAS in the past (Dlink DNS-323, DNS-343, a Qnap TS409Pro, and a few others). Synology blows them all out of the water in terms of speed and features. I even have the older Synology DS508 and it rocks also. The DS1511+ is similar the older Synology 5 bay series (DS508, DS509, DS1010+, etc..) except that they have now added an extra eSATA port for the extra DX510 expansion, and they have added more ram and a dual-core CPU to increase the speed for background tasks. In most cases, it is not even the network speed which is the bottleneck with this unit.. It is the local hard drive speed you are copying files to/from.I love it, and with the nice promo pricing which NCIX had during boxing week, it was a pleasant surprise considering Synology had just announced the unit less than 2 weeks prior.
