I switched to LG when Yamaha got out of the optical drive business. Their drives seem to last a fairly long time, and have very few issues with things like reading old discs or writing uncommon formats.This model is the first new one I've had since they made everything in beige, and while it works as expected I have to say it makes a poor showing in terms of noise. Spinning the disc has a steady and mostly reasonable thrum that reminds me of an old Socket A/462 CPU cooler. Unfortunately, the stepper motor that moves the optical assembly is far louder and quite jarring. It makes a brief noise on boot-up similar to a floppy drive (not sure why this is necessary, though it has a kind of nostalgia), but when accessing data randomly (ex: accessing files in different locations), it can be quite annoying.Rates highly for operational value, but if you have a mesh case or plan to run software from disc, you may want to look elsewhere because of the noise. You could try limiting the maximum speed via software like SpeedDisc, but as I mentioned the lens motor seems to make the worst of the noise, so simply spinning the disc slower may not achieve much. It should be fine for playing video though, as that should be written fairly consecutively.

I already had one in another computer for many months, and never had a problem whatsoever. It's a little loud when writing but, i never really found one completely quiet.always fast shipping from ncix and great service.
