The motherboard manufacturer, SuperMicro, stands behind their goods. This is a very very good server developing block. It is a good place for individuals seeking to get hands on encounter with the G34 and appear to scale to multi-socket Magny-Cours processor options from AMD.Be cautious about memory selection, at the time of my buy SuperMicro had certified the board with Hynix DDR3 memory only, tech support people jumped all over my decision of Micron memory. That mentioned, in practice the board is truly very tolerant of memory choice. Lack of testing and excellent handle somewhere in the supply chain resulted in two failed motherboards, suitable out of the box. Motherboard š performs fine, but ş and Š had to be sent back with an RMA. The dilemma: NO-VIDEO, NO-POST CODES, NO-BEEP codes on boards ş and Š. These observations have been reported elsewhere on the world wide web. Had been it not for a committed SuperMicro engineer who stepped in and took ownership of the difficulty, I would not have operating motherboard š. He pushed via RMA š and personally verified functionality of the CPU, Memory and Motherboard before return. Quite impressive service, certainly!

CostIPMI w/remote iKVM (when it performs)Wonderful VPS platformFedora 13 runs wonderful IPMI firmware still shakey, crashesNightmare obtaining compatible RAMThe Nexus Fan adapter N82E16811996022 suggested by FNI will place the 120mm fan in the way of the 16x PCIe slot. It's wonderful as extended as you don't need the slot, which I don't. So I bought a pair of 2G Kingston RAM modules (KVR1333D3D8R9SǘG) to burn in the server, then I sold some VPS space, so I bought 4x of (KVR1333D3D8R9SǚG) thinking that the identical model quantity would nonetheless stay compatible, appropriate? Incorrect! The quad KVR1333D3D8R9SǚG kept causing ECC errors and would reboot the method, but only in quad or triple configuration. In a pair, they appear to function fine.So I e-mail Supermicro assistance, and they say, "Our engineers have to use the Hynix modules". I say, "These are Hynix DRAM elements on the Kingston module." They say, "Use the Hynix modules." I say, "Arrrrg" and I call Kingston simply because now my acquire is 34 days old.Kingston assistance was Awesome! They acknowledged the dilemma and even steered me away from getting KVR1333D3D4R9SǚGED mainly because of a unique issue, even although Kingston's web site lists it as "tested".Kingston even called back tonight to RMA my 4G modules to N82E16820134977 which is KVR1333D3D4R9SǚG . Yeah Kingston!

Do not own this mb however but am planning to acquire one particular right after tax refund arrives. I held off due to the fact I install my units in midtower configurations and I did not like the choices for cooling, Dynatron and Thermaltake are considerably to obnoxious to my taste. Given that December Noctua has supplied an "A3" choice to use their NH-U12 DO and NH-U9DO coolers on G34 cpus. Noctua coolers are installed on practically all of my workstations ྪ) and their efficiency is exceptional! If you have the headroom, go for it. Maybe one particular: although there isn't much clearance for an NH-U12DO in a lot of ATX instances, they will match. Solves the dilemma of making the x16 slot usable.

- ATX regular mother board- Single slot cpu socket (good to preserve $$ down)- eight DDR3 ram slots (for expansion)- PCIx assistance (Modern graphics cards)- PCI assistance (if you nevertheless have an old PCI sound card)- six SATA port + 1 PATA port (if you nevertheless have an old CD/DVD/RW drive)- 8ቨ core Magny-Cours Opteron CPU ƒxCPU/VM) good for virtualization- Up to 32GB unbuffered RAM 128 Registered.- If you are reading this then you may possibly be more interested in what parts would function with this point. - Obtaining the proper memory was a pain and I had to take a risk with unbuffered ECC RAM from Kingston (KVR1333D3E9SǚG): Glad I did.- If you ought to have Registered DIMMs and will need additional than 32GB of RAM then ignore my RAM selection.- Booted without having troubles on my initial try.- Please study the Manual just before you begin plugin factors, specially for the PWR/Reset switch connections. These are just pet peeves and did not influence my rating of the mother board.- Extremely Challenging TO Come across the right ECC MEMORY (Kingston and Essential have a good memory search db for this board)- No on-board sound (this is a server board you may well not will need sound)- No floppy disk drive (who nevertheless utilizes these unless you are forced to install from it)- It seriously would have been good if the manual clearly stated that Fan 1 to six can be employed for the CPU.- Startup/initialization can be scary; nearly as if a vacuum cleaner is becoming turned on - but it settles down in seconds.- Manual really should have clearly stated that it is okay to have only 2 sticks of memory. Stating:- "Always set up in groups of four and in the numerical order of the DIMM slots" gives the impression that you Ought to install 4 Sticks of memory OR ELSE your server installation will not work! These are all I can think of that produced the selection and installation of this motherboard a lot more trying than it really should be....Che Current setup:- 16GB ƔX4GB) quad channel unbuffered 1333 ECC RAM :- KVR1333D3E9SǚG (less high priced than Registered RAMS) - AMD Opteron 6128 Magny-Cours 2.0GHz- 650 Watts Antec earth watts PSU- Dynatron A6 77mm two Ball CPU Cooler- Old Chieftec ATX case- 500GB SATA/ 2X 640GB SATA drives:- No Raid however.- Windows 7 expert (Yes I know! It really should be Windows Server 2008 or some Enterprise Linux OS; but I am operating under a price range!!- Will set up some Linux o/s in the future : Ubuntu or Suse- Windows mem-test showed no troubles (Will attempt other thorough mem test apps) - At present running 3 VM using VMware player three.1 (for BI servers)VM-1 :- 6GB VM-two :- 4GB VM-3 :- 4GB- Can still run a single more VM but will have to make adjustments to RAM allocations.- Temp with all 3 servers operating 29 deg C in the middle of winter (I estimate it will go up 38 - 42 in summer time)- Have not attempted a Raid implementation however.

Seems wonderful. Haven't used the board significantly however, but following purchasing it and two four-gig 1333 DIMMs, I read in the manual that four DIMMs is the minimum. The method is moving a lot more slowly than one particular would expect with eight-core and 8gb of RAM. I will post once again if adding an more 8gb fixes the problem.

This board is great. Every thing is supported in OpenSolaris. Supermicro tends to make an excelent server motherboard. I commonly purchase INTEL primarily based systems, but the value of G34 primarily based CPU's were challenging to pass up. This motherboard has a TON of extras. Remote management, quad channel memory and eight slots...2 onboard usb ports... lots of fan ports (any of which can be utilised for the CPU cooler) Each gigabit ethernet ports are on a dedicated pci-e lane and help jumbo frames. The socket g34 is actually easy to attach a heatsink to. I ordered N82E16835114112 which i recommend to any person (unless you are making use of a 1U case)It has IDE which i consider is a PRO because it permits you to use IDE for your cd rom if you require one. Or maybe a compact flash card. Sata placement is somewhat weird...Also, mine didn't come with a manual. I'm almost 100% confident this was an oversight. Every other Supermicro motherboard i've ever ordered had a manual. Fortunately it's obtainable as a pdf download from thetr internet site. I took a bit of a gamble on this board. I wasn't confident if everything would be supported in OpenSolaris. Fortunately it worked out. The G34 cpu's are Big....All in all, this motherboard is a Great deal thinking of quite a few last gen serverboards expense the same.

The feature set is strong. Especially Lights out Management.Excellent way to get a eight or 12 way box. I have been via two motherboards were the IPMI (lights out management) is failing. System shows the BMC as failed and the settings are ghosted in BIOS. It doens't reflect it BIOS version any longer and you can not relash even from a bootable USB stick. This is not a great sign for SuperMicro. Making use of this with their 743 SATA chassis and 645 watt PSU. They replaced the 1st 1 over night at least. I have actually 100's upon one hundred's of DIY workstations and servers. Utilised to Super, Tyan, MSI, ASUS, Gigabyte, and so forth...This is scary coming from a manufacturer in the server space

We necessary as substantially memory as feasible (allowing larger FEA models to run prior to going to disk), and the entire system price required to be beneath 񘐜. With the 8 slots, this has got to be the cheapest way to get 32Gb on 1 machine.

- ATX standard mother board- 8 DDR3 ram slots (for expansion) up to 32GB unbuffered RAM or 128 Registered.- PCIx support- 6 SATA port- 8ቨ core Magny-Cours Opteron CPU ƒxCPU/VM)Here is a trick. I purchased the A6 CPU fan and it sounded like a jet plane. I then purchased the WATER cooled CORSAIR CWCH50-1 High Efficiency CPU Cooler. It takes a little dremel perform on the round bracket that comes with water cooler. Have to cut off two of the legs from bracket (line up other two legs with mount holes on MB). Then connect the cooling plate to cpu with the modified bracket with the two legs. Operates Fantastic. I have this in the Rosewill CHALLENGER Case ... 5 120 mm fans running in this server and cant even hear the point Ɠmonths on). I have this sitting next to my Tv in living space of my corporate apartment. SILENT!!! RAID is horrible slow on this board. Do not appear for a quickly raid setup here. That is why I give the board a four star. I suggest just connecting drives in non raid mode. Also had issue with VM ESXI seeing raid so installed Windows 7 Ultimate. That being said about RAID sucks this board is fantastic for somebody wanting a low price multicore/high memory setup. Low-cost way for 32 GB of RAM (Kingston ValueRAM 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3). I use it for operating VMs. I have tried a number of OSs and at the moment operating windows 7 with VM workstations. Functions Excellent! I just RDP into it. At the moment have a VM running Oracle Linux five.4 11gR2 Oracle DB with 10GB of memory allocated to it. Two more Oracle Linux five.four VMS with 6 GBs of memory each and every. So I have three vms taking 24GBs of memory and the Pc has been running fine. Drives are a tiny slow so as an alternative of acquiring a new RAID controller I will acquire SSDs when the value is proper to speed up tough drive performance. I figure 128 GB drives when the value is appropriate. Every single operating 1 or two VMs. Leave Win OS in mirrored raid with standard difficult drives.

Just read the specs. G34 socket ... two x8 slots ... 1 x16 slot ... dual Intel nics ... IPMI ... 128GB ram ... two internal USB sockets ... all on a standard ATX footprint. All pro's. None. I did, even so, combine a Dynatron CPU cooler (N82E16835114113) with a Nexus fan adapter (N82E16811996022) and a four-pin 120mm fan --- just use the current Dynatron fan to map drill holes onto the adapter --- to boost cooling and reduce noise. The PCI-e x16 slot is overlapped by the 120mm fan in this configuration, rendering it useless. But this is a server, and the loss of a high-speed graphics slot was acceptable for the payoff of silence. With two x8 slots readily available, this was not a dilemma for me. The Supermicro website indicates that of the i386 CentOS releases, only version 5.four will help the socket G34 processors (not even 5.5 will run). They mean it. The CentOS x86_64 releases, however, operate like a dream. Operating CentOS x86_64 v5.5 now.

Wonderful cost/performance for vps host server Right after a couple of months in production, I'm acquiring this very same BMC fail, plus I've had a kernel module crash, which resulted in a network port inoperative till the next reboot (oh, but you have to hit F1 to get past the BMC error). Out of quite a few, a lot of ears of Supermicro hardware, this appears to be their initial lemon. Let's see how soon they can right it.

Utilised 9 of them so far and they all worked flawless!! Numerous of these came in the wrong box and had the wrong driver disks!! Whats up with that? Very effective with an 8 Core AMD monster. Severe savings over Intel without having losing performance which is a enormous plus!!
