Cons: Proprietary file structure; unpredictable behaviour; not a true SAN

Pros: Simple to setup; inexpensive
Comment:
I would not buy this little toaster again. If you are like me, and thinking of buying this to centrally store your information for a good price - don't. It's not a true SAN device, meaning you can't just type in an address (i.e 192.168.0.10) and access the drive. You have to install Netgear client software to run it...and it's not good software. Today it just decided to loss about 80GBs of data I spent copying over - it's flaky! Secondly, the drives a reformatted into a proprietary file structure (not NTFS or FAT32). This is bad news if this device was ever to break, because in order to recover your files you MUST have another Netgear Storage Central box. I'm already looking for an alternative and am not going to cheap-out this time.

Cons: Gets pretty warmNo FanSlow transfer rate

Pros: Price (if on sale)Easy to set upSize (very compact)Works fine with Vista
Comment:
In general, this is a pretty good piece of hardware. It does the trick and you can't really complain for the price. I use this for backup and small file storage across my home network and it has been fine so far. The only beef that I have with it is that it does get warm. For those who are wondering, this works fine with Vista 32-bit...just make sure to update the firmware.

Cons: Firmware flash and software update was a bit confusing at first. No SATA version of the device.

Pros: Easy setup, runs great
Comment:
Set it and forget it, the backup software works like a charm and my drive, the "BigStore" sits on the network. I bought 2 more units, for the price these are pretty phenominal. Just give me a SATA version.

Cons: Requires DHCP serverOnly works with Windows environmentsCan get extremely hot when in use

Pros: Easy to set upInexpensive compared to similar products
Comment:
I purchased this product alongside two 300 GB Seagate drives. This thing is about as easy as it gets when it comes to installing. Slip in the drives - making sure that the jumpers are set to CS - and power up the unit. I installed the updated Firmware and software package (highly recommended). After updating I simply made de volumes that I wanted, either mirror or not, and that was it. IT JUST WORKS. The only real disappointing thing about the Netgear Storage Center is that it works with Windows ONLY. The only way to be able to see the volumes in Unix/Linux or OSX would be to share the volumes through Windows. My only real concern with the unit at this point would be the longevity of the drives inside. The unit can get extremely hot after 1-2 hours of drive activity. The drives do spin down when not in use however which helps to cool things down a little.
