Cons: Not cheap

Pros: Silent drivePerformances are great
Comment:
This is one of the best drive I've had. I originally used it as a USB drive for my RPi, but then put it in a Synology DS213j. Currently, it is running in the 213j as a Single drive, but I am planning on getting another to have some redundancy. It has very good performances and is virtually silent. I never heard it within the past months. It is night and day compared to the previous Seagate I had before.Definitively a good buy. In the past years, I switched all my drives from Seagate to WD after having several failures on Seagate and a very bad customer service. I did have to RMA with WD once in the past year (not for this drive) and had a very good service. They also shipped me a brand new drive instead of a refurbished one like Seagate always did.

Bought two of these drives for a Synology 212J. Have had no problems in a little over a year of 24/7 operation. So far a very quality drive for the price.

Cons: I've experienced very high failure rates with similar WD green drives. Maybe these will be better, maybe not.

Pros: Cool and quiet. Low standby power. Better warranty (3 years) than some other drives.
Comment:
These seem to be the drives to get for SOHO NAS servers. WD claims these have a MTBF of 1,000,000 hours. I'll believe it when I see it. I've had a 57% failure rate on 2TB WD Green drives after 20,000 to 40,000 hours.

Installed two of these in a Synology DS213J. The NAS picked them up instantly and configuration was simple. So far the drives seem to remain cool and are quiet. I'm glad I spent an extra couple of bucks to get the WD Red.

Cons: Price (109$), Only 3 Years Warranty

Pros: NAS Ready, High MTBF, Feel more reliable than the Green Series.
Comment:
I bought it to give it a try. I already have 2 WD Green that works flawless since 2 years and I was looking to back them up. I bought this drive just for that. Access time are much better than on Green one, a bit less than Black series but they are louder. Anyways great drive hope it last at least 5 years. Will buy some others for sure. I might try the new WD SE series more pricey but 5yrs warranty and Enterprise class drive. I prefer them to the Green drive no Clicking when on idle. Yeah just for that it worth the price!

Cons: Questions over reliability

Pros: Reasonable performance, relatively cool, quiet, work well in ReadyNAS
Comment:
Bought to go in a ReadyNAS NV2+ 4 bay unit. Took a chance with 3 of these and did not perform pre-usage WD tools diagnostics. So far they have performed without issue, however I am still concerned about the long term reliability of the drives. It seems that all manufacturer drives over 1TB have issues either immediately or deteriorate rapidly after a years usage.Performance seems to be OK though it is hard to gauge as the main switch it is connected to is capped to 100Mb. Temperatures are fine.If buying again I would be sure to first do a full diagnostic run through to ensure that the drives were good before being used in any NAS appliance.

I use this HDD for external drive USB3, as backup. Works like a charm. I am going to build a small server for data storage and these Red disk are just perfect for this. It is not as cheap as the low price seagate drive..

Cons: None

Pros: Reliable, low power consumption
Comment:
I bought this to replace my other big brand HD. The reason I choose this is because of good MTBF rating and is built for 24/7 operation. So far, I get what I want. And it can works like a normal HD, does not need to run raid. The other big brand HD is faster than this one, for sure, with similar spec. But I cannot complaint about the speed, cause I trade it off with reliability. The other one has on and off read/write error after 1 month of use. Eventually the OS gave up and cannot boot anymore. This one is very reliable and use less power, generate less heat.Red is a new series, only exist for a few years. But it does earn my trust, and WD itself. I never get any problem with WD HD, even with an 10 years old HD. What good is it if a HD is not reliable, even if it is fast ? If I buy HD again, I will still choose WD over the other big brand.

I've been running a pair of these in my FreeNAS box in Raid 1 for a few months now, and they've been great. The only problem is I'm running out of space... I see they're on sale again... Hmmm... I believe another purchase is in my future!

Snagged one of these during a sale, to use as a data drive in a desktop PC (OS is on an SSD). It's been running super quiet and cool so far. No complaints, you can always count on WD for quality drives.

Just got two of these and paired with the Synology D212j NAS enclosure. Setup was a snap and everything working out of the box but what was really impressive is that with two of these running in raid, you can barely here there. Very little to no vibration which is a far cry from my older WD 500gb drive of years past. These drives are very nice for the price and you can't beat WD drives for longevity and stability.

Cons: Cost vs other 2TB drives

Pros: QuietLow vibration
Comment:
Using a pair of these in my DS212j home NAS box. Very impressed with how quiet they run and there's almost no vibration from them. Actually the Green drives in my WD Mybook Live NAS units produce more noise. The only negative I think is the higher cost compared to other drives of the same capacity like the Green series. But I think they are worth it.

Received both drives in quick order with free shipping! I am replacing my previous 2 TB WD Caviar Green with these two Red drives. The Ready NAS Duo immediately started initializing the first Red drive( I had to do some software updates on my Green drive before the NAS would recognize it). So far the first drive works as advertised, Thanks WD and NCIX.

I love the extra little bit they add over the green drives heat and all that is way down and the vibration and other NAS features rock. Pick the drive up while on and you can almost not even tell its on such a smooth running drive. I will be investing in many more Red series drive soon and even be swapping out my non NAS green desktop drives to Reds to cut heat and vibration as the difference is that big with a small speed boost to boot.

Cons: Is an enterprise-class green drive.

Pros: Better than green drives!
Comment:
I just replaced my 4xWD-green RAID5 with a 5xWD-red RAID5 on a new system that supports PCIe-x8 cards. I bought an 8-port SAS card, so this new server has room for 7 more drives. With another card, another 8 drives. Fantastically, I no longer have to be concerned about the sector alignment issue anymore; my old server had fedora 14 on it and I had to manually align these drives with an Acronis tool available via the WD website. But Fedora 18 aligns them for me! I'm getting about 105MB/s average write speed on a gigabit LAN.

I replaced 4 x 1TB WD blacks with 4 of these 2TB Reds in a Synology 412+ NAS. Temps dropped from 39-40 degrees to 29-30 degrees which is pretty substantial! Doubles my space, and I can hear the drives spinning anymore.I hadn't run speed tests as I run on a 100MB network, and figured that would be the bottle neck over the drive speeds.Since they are pretty new drive, and not as proven as the WD Blacks, I'll have to wait to see if they live up to expectations.
