Lot of storage capacity, footprint is okEffortless to setup in Win7 (but not 100% transparent)Can stream audio, video and pictures as nicelyNo need to have to leave any of my machines operating on the network to share files, this product does the job.Straightforward access by a browser because it is an IP driveComes with a spot for a Kensington lock which is excellent due to the fact I have place quite sensitive and critical (souvenirs) in itA huge plus is that all of the application that comes with it is in fact quite beneficialSince it is recognised as any hard drive in my system it suggests I can use it for any task or any software program that I show match. Can retailer additional thant 200 DVD of your collection, I am considering about ripping all I got considering that it is most likely less expensive than buying yet another cabinet to store them and considerably additional practical! Consider having your own Tv on demand with films you really want to watch! Not noisy but it vibrates a little. The actual firmware is still in is infancy and would require to be upgraded (again) due to the fact there are some quirks in the most recent version. Nonetheless to pleased with it to shave an egg off.Not seriously a con but you do need to have a Gigabit switch if you want to make full use of the device's possible since at 100Mbs it is substantially to slow.At 1000Mbs I got about 80MB/s in file transfer which is about proper and equivalent to a SATA II. BTW NetGear GS105 is a excellent match for it.Would love to go absolutely wireless with the drive so I could hide it safely but wireless speed (even 802.11n שּׁMbs) is not very there but. I utilised Norton 360 in automated mode and got rid of any hassle for backing up anything including systems files. Fantastic. The incorporated software program that comes with it also works fine but I am not about to use two of them, so I had to opt for... decisions, choices...Need to have bought it right here at NewEgg but it was not obtainable then.Fantastic general value and the additional 40 or so bucks for a drive of that size that does networking is truly worth it.

Great setup featuresSmaller footprintQuietLots of space UI freezes every single now and then. Going from 1 section to yet another, sometimes it says the device is restarting and to wait, but absolutely nothing ever happens. Just his the refresh button on your browser and it's fine again. I purchased this mostly for media streaming to my PS3 and a couple of other devices. I really like the reality that it has an RJ45 port to go straight to my router so I don't have to worry about leaving my desktop on to access almost everything. Also functions as a backup server for all of my systems. So much space I don't know what I'll do with it all.

You actually can't beat it for the price. The drive applied inside this device is a good drive (WD Green 1TB). I've purchased and utilised this drive in a lot of other implementations. Even even though it's a great WD drive beneath the hood, I really do consider that WD skimped on crucial elements with this device... namely, the controller. I've had a WD My Book Planet edition for various years now with no fail but as with most other things, it looks like WD was trying to conserve some cash and came out with this My Book Reside. My principal practical experience with this device is dismantling and recovering data from a failed unit. A great buddy of mine owns this unit and it failed on him. WD issued him an RMA but it was up to him to recover his information. Most locations want in upwards of ũ,000 to recover so I told him I'd do it for him. In this failure, the tough drive itself was fully functioning but it was the controller that was unresponsive. All of this because his wife accidentally unplugged it. WD gets an A for work on this 1 but nonetheless, whatever modified from the My Book Globe Edition wants to get altered back.

Although the drive lasted, I had no issues. The software program worked great and the drive was quick. I employed firewire for my connection. This was a replacement for my backup tricky-drive. It was obtaining lengthy in the tooth and I wanted to back everything up prior to the drive died, though it was showing no indicators of matters. The MyBook lasted 3 years and then I heard the clicking noise of death. It has been replaced with a Seagate. My MyBook wasn't this distinct model, but a 500gb 1.Ironically the drive this MyBook replaced was an old internal WD drive I place inside an enclosure. That drive is nonetheless working at 10+ years of age.I also have multiple Raptor drives at six+ years of age. I assume WD nonetheless makes a excellent item, but there is definitely one thing up with these MyBooks.

-Simple to setup-Rapid -It did not automatically re-map my itunes music library...but I don't assume that was a function of the drive This drive was so uncomplicated to set-up...you just require a grasp on how to handle a network. I assigned it a static IP for a 7 computer residence network and no laptop or computer had a difficulty accessing it. I am running Windows 7 property premium on each computer. All of them recognized it promptly in the network settings and I basically had to install a driver. 1 thing that would support the speed is to have a gigabit switching router (one of the new Linksys ones looks great for it), I feel the speed of the drive itself is quick, but given that I have it plugged in directly to my WRT-160N, I am missing out on the gigabit switching...excellent item general. Good product for property use...

Good cost. Small piece of gear.It can stream common definition to a network device but not HD (choppy).Does not take up too many resources while operating in background, but on a single-core program you might see slowdowns as it backs up files. The potential to preserve versions of files and deleted files on the storage device is good, but difficult to get to. But they are there. My device loses its connection to the network about each and every two days. The drive makes a Extremely audible clicking noise which most persons can recognize as a the slow death of a hardware failure in a drive. The transfer speed is theoretical. You will never ever reach the more quickly network transfers since you are restricted by the speed of the drive.Drive does not function nicely in static mode. If you put something new on your personal computer with the existing backup computer software installed you will find you cannot delete or move something until the network drive has backed it up. This is due to the fact it is "in use" by the backup computer software. Do not believe that your pc is suddenly broken if you do not have access to your files and can not manipulate them. This can slow down your day to day stuff if you move your files around a lot like me. If so, just anticipate some delays and plan accordingly.

Cons: No direct USB connection, hard drive not user replaceable, no USB extension for additional drive

Pros: Great speed, Easy to setup, dlna media sharing(hooks to the ps3 / xbox / windows media player and itunes), decent security for home use, remote access (haven't tried that one yet), compact and good build
Comment:
Havent tried remote access from outside my home network. But within my home network - the speeds are great (faster than what you would expect). The features for the media sharing is also great. You can easily connect your ps3/xbox or another computer to play media files straight off the drive. Its real easy to setup and once you have all the accounts ready, the drive is reasonably secure in my opinion and definitely easy to use. There is sort of a wizard which connects and sets it up for you in just a few steps. The build is also excellent and its really compact and really quiet. I haven't noticed the hard drive make any noise at all so far. There is a small LED to show its active (not distracting).2TB Networked drive for $170 is a super deal any day especially if the product is this great. Just hope the drive doesn't give up on me (I can't replace/upgrade it myself).

It's quiet. I have a My Book that I purchased a couple years ago. Out of all the hard drives I have bought, this is the only 1 that has died. I have Maxtor and Seagate drives that are five - ten years old and an IBM drive more than ten years old and they are all still dependable. Not your finest bet for reliability. Had this drive for a week now. Extremely rapidly transfers over gigabit. Lives up to it's name for size, it truly is the size of a little book. Also quite quiet when transferring files (it's 5 ft away from me and I can't hear it). Absolutely the software, it just seems truly clunky. Utilised it for a couple minutes then removed it. If not working with this for backup purposes I advise checking your router for the IP address assigned to the device and configuring it using it's web interface.

Straightforward to set up, gives NAS out of the box and uncomplicated to use if you want it for basic items. Good capacity to backup in the background with a fairly small footprint (use of program resources). You can map the drive as a network drive and not use their software program if you wish.Drive formatted to NTFS so you can use big files sizes (above 2 GB).Completely functional but not content about the software program one bit. The software that comes with it is clearly made for extreme novices. It backs up information according to categories such as documents and movies, photos, other, and so on. You do not get to opt for which files, only groups on or off. It does not tell you which files are being backed up, either, only how considerably rough information is there (in Megabytes). It looks for particular file extensions and backs them up in the background. The only way you can tell what was backed up is to try a retrieval process and then attempt and find your file for backup to see if it exists. I did this as soon as or twice to come across that it backed up some of my files but not all file types. You cannot select which folders to backup which makes this really frustrating to use. Based upon their restricted software program alone I would not purchase this once again but I did like the capacity to map the drive. You would have to keep the drive powered on consistently if you used it as a mapped drive with 3rd party backup software program. This is a setting in the software once you get it up and running.
