AMD Athlon II X3 455 Triple Core Processor
Comment:
* Really quickly CPU* Excellent Price point (bang for the buck)* Uncomplicated to install* Decent cooling fan * None I needed a affordable CPU for a spending budget build and chose the AMD Athlon II x3 455 Rana 3.3Ghz processor considering that Newegg had it on sale. I have yet another program that runs on an AMD Phenom II 965 Black Ɠ.4Ghz), and this CPU tested very favorably when compared side by side. It doesn't have the overclocking possible and extra core of the 965, but out of the box, the 455 holds its own at about half the cost. So, it's great for a spending budget build. I installed it on a BIOSTAR MCP6P3 mobo that didn't have a core-unlocking feature, so I don't know if the 4th core is functional or not (I had gotten the mobo free with a combo deal.). I paired the CPU with two sticks of G. Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1600 2Mbs (total 4Mbs) of memory (F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL), and it posted with out a hitch. To make the program a little more quickly, I set up a boot drive with an Intel X-25M 120G SSD to go along with a Seagate 2TB HDD for information storage. The AMD CPU screams in this set up! Very advocate!

AMD Athlon II X3 455 Triple Core Processor
Comment:
Low-cost little CPU that does the job. Put it in a spending budget build for a client. Unlocked the 4th core, and the WEI went from a 6.9 to a 7.3 on the CPU and RAM. When the 4th core is unlocked, bios and windows see it as Phenom B55. Running at 3.three Ghz, for the cost, this little guy shines. Have heard Cache doesn't unlock with 4th core, so not actually bumping it up to actual Phenom Quad-Core specs, but for the price, I'm not complaining. Have utilized this a couple times with an Asus MB with core-unlocker. I've had no troubles unlocking the 4th core with any of the builds I've utilised it in. Newegg seemed to be slipping as of late on efficiency, but they made it up to me as of late, producing a couple of RMA's discomfort cost-free, and less difficult than I could have imagined.

Fourth core was straightforward to unlock nice buy for the cost. Fan does kinda sucks you could want a superior 1 if you want to over-clock but it works.

AMD Athlon II X3 455 Triple Core Processor
Cons: - It's not a quad, but you knew that already.- None, really.

Pros: - Super cheap, quality processor that runs cool and offers serious bang for the buck despite its odd-number of cores and lack of marketing. - Backwards compatibility with older AM2+ motherboards, pending BIOS updates and some vendor exceptions. - The highest stock-clocked Athlon II currently available.
Comment:
Bought this to replace my ancient Athlon 64 "Venice" CPU in a brand new system. Having done some research specifically with the intent to put together a budget machine with gaming bite, the X3 seems to be a great buy. Tests on several sites (a quick Google search away) show the one extra core to be a decisive factor in newer, multi-threaded games, whereas having two extra cores (as in the X4 "Propus") will only show in CPU-heavy titles, and of course in daily productivity apps. Don't let the odd number of cores fool you; this is a great gaming-centric CPU.Other options include the not-actually-Phenom II Phenom II 840 and the venerable Phenom II X4 955. Intel's i3 is also worth a look, but the price/performance ratio doesn't scale quite as well.
