Adds an added hundred MHz more than the Athlon II 645 for the similar expense Known as a Phenom when it lacks the L3 cache. Older 800 chips had 4MB L3 as opposed to 900 chips 6MB L3 Really should be sold and listed as an Athlon II 650 Shame on AMD

Did I say fast? Installed on the MB effortlessly, the fan/heat sink snapped on more very easily than in my final 3 builds, and there's pretty much no fan noise when it runs. No L3 cache (but the chip is so fast you won't notice the difference). I was all set to spend an additional ฮ on the subsequent Phenom II model up the line when this unit appeared. No one had reviewed it but, so I googled about and got some fantastic evaluations. Excellent worth for money was the general consensus, as well as the fastest AMD chip in the 95 watt range. On a Linux 64-bit OS that takes benefit of all 4 cores, this point blue-shifts.

Far as cost to efficiency ration is concerned, this is very easily one of the finest processors readily available on the market place right now. If you're making a gaming Pc on a spending budget, or searching to upgrade your everyday desktop CPU then this is certainly worth a powerful consideration. A lot of people are complaining about the Phenom tag due to the fact it has no L3 cache. Call it an Athlon if you prefer. It doesn't adjust the truth that this processor smokes each competitor in this value range. none whatsoever. Really good processor at a fantastic value point.

Fantastic value! Quick CPU. Scored 7.4 in WEI. AMD Hyper Transport is not so rapidly at accessing memory. The RAM cored only a five.7 in MEI. Exact same RAM scores 7.two on a different machine with a processor produced by a diverse mfr. Superior CPU for a spending budget construct.

Super quickly tiny Quad Core for an exceptional price. Very suggested for budget conscious users. This CPU is basically an Athlon that is clocked to 3.2Ghz. It only has 2MB of cache as opposed to the 8MB the "real" Phenoms have. I'm not positive why AMD put the Phenom name on it. But considering the high speed, it's more rapidly than the old Phenoms, but not rather as very good as the new Phenoms. I guess AMD put the "Phenom" name on this chip because it is clocked so high that it can compete with the Phenom class processors. But if you're a gamer, you may well want to think about the 500 and 900 series Phenoms. I've used about 15 of these considering that AMD released them, in several client builds (including entry level gaming systems), and they carry out really well. Regardless, I'd nevertheless consider a Phenom with 8MB of cache for gaming. If you're not gaming, then go with this a single, or any of the Athlon X4 line of Quad Core's.

This processor replaced an AM two+ 7850 Black Edition and is noticeably faster. Needed only a bios upgrade of my Gigabyte MA790X UD4P motherboard to be properly recognized. Didn't break either Windows 7 Qualified or Ubuntu ten.04 in my dual boot arrangement. Windows 7 knowledge rose from 6.2 to 7.three. Properly worth the cost. Not a Black Edition but I could not even attempt and overclock this one. The truth that it is a 95W quad core is definitely a plus for me. The existing Antec Tru Power 550 power supply that I am working with has additional than adequate muscle to drive it.

I'm a big fan of Intel items and generally steer clear of AMD. I used this processor in a develop I put together for a friend. In benchmarks, it does practically 90% as nicely as the Intel processor that I paid twice as significantly dollars for.Runs pretty cool. Stock fan seems to do a decent job as opposed to the Intel ones, but I use an aftermarket cooler anyway. Fairly misleading to put the Phenom name on this Athlon processor, but whatever. Misleading/confusing names on processors have been normal for 10 years now.

AMD Phenom II X4 840 3.2GHz Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor
Cons:No L3 (not really a con for me, although con compared to other quad processors)

Pros:Cheap, Quad Core processor, Powerful budget CPU.
Comment:
Purchased this processor as a temporary CPU for my AM3+ rig. Very affordable, and powerful CPU for its price. No L3 cache may be a slight downside for that extra gaming performance. Works well with games at 1080p resolution (as long as you have a powerful GPU). For a budget gaming PC, this is a recommended CPU to buy.

Effectively, this is a quad core, clocked at stock speeds of three.2 Gigahertz. A processing powerhouse for the value of the cost. This is a terrific value. It has a lot of headroom, even although it doesn't have unlocked multipliers.... which I'll get to in a second.... No L3 Cache, but the prior processor I owned was the Phenom I 9600, the original Phenoms with the TLB challenge (which was later fixed through bios updates and workarounds) - So this is a big step up from me. My prior 9600 would hit a wall at around 2700. Now, even although this processor does not have unlocked multipliers like the Black Editions, and even though this is an Athlon x4 under the branding of a Phenom, I think this processor deserves the title "Phenom" - the overclocking potential is elevated as mentioned by other reviewers when you use a heatsink with heatpipes. I've accomplished just that, and I can obtain overclocks to four gigahertz (slightly unstable at that point) so I clocked it back down to about three.8. With a really excellent cooling answer, you could accomplish four gigahertz with this quad core processor. Heck, I did it on air. Stability may possibly boost with a slight voltage enhance, but once again, this isn't some thing I advise unless you have sufficient cooling. This processor does a quite excellent job of staying cool (mine stays in low 30s idle, overclocked) and you can anticipate overclocks of up to three.8, three.9 and possibly beyond 4 gigahertz with proper cooling. Wonderful value. Good job AMD.

Quite capable Quad core 95 watt CPU for AM2+/AM3 boards. I put this in a Biostar TA-790GX 128M (older AM2+ board without additional VRM phase). It necessary an update of BIOS to the newest (beta) BIOS dated 11񳏊 before swapping CPU's. Old 1 was a Phenom 9600 Black (at stock two.3Ghz). Comes with a affordable aluminum heatsink/fan assembly. I reused the copper unit from my earlier 9600 Phenom along with some Arctic Silver five heatsink compound. Win7 did not see as big an increase in CPU as I would have expected. utilizing 2.3Ghz 9600 I had a fairly impressive 6.9 CPU rating. Replacing that with the new Phenom II 840 it went up to 7.three. Neither unit has L3 cache. I noticed a considerably more responsive PC throughout gaming sessions (like w/Dragon Age II which is fairly CPU intensive) even with out disabling AV software programEven with that I would highly recommend this CPU for those seeking to upgrade some of the older boards out there. Just make certain you can use a C3 rev. CPU prior to dropping money on it. Quite a few boards can with use the later version CPU's with a carefully researched BIOS upgrade.Would also be a quite great CPU for modest form factor (mini-ITX/uATX) gaming PC's. I am taking into consideration a second one to create a mini-PC for gaming in a large truck throughout off duty/relaxing time.

Going for a budget gaming system, thought I made the right choice (my brother was coming from an AMD 4200+ x2!). So far, been editing Crysis2 and playing L4D2/Day of Defeat Source/Crysis1/Crysis2, nice speeds seeing as how it only has 4GB of Corsair Vengeance and a 1GB nVidia GTS250. Plus, it all smells really new ^_^ not that that's a buying pro but it beats old socks!

Cons:-High TDP-Only shines in multi-threaded apps

Pros:-Low cost-Decent performance
Comment:
Using this in a AM3+ board for the time being. Once Bulldozer is released, this thing may disappear. Less than $100 for a quad is a very good price. Intel dual cores can best it unless the app is highly multi-threaded. Still a good buy for now.

Excellent bang for the buck at this time. Installed in a Biostar Ta785g3. Installed with fresh thermal compound and no overheating problems with stock cooler.
