Plays essentially any format and codecVery best GUI out of any media player on the market placeRF remoteWonderful nearby content player, and pretty great browser for the on the internet stuff.Boxee is constantly operating on updating and fixing bugs in the computer software. Much more high-priced than other comparable media playersNetflix and Hulu not offered however. ( I believe it's a matter of when not if)Truly I find a lot of of the criticisms unfounded or incredibly rare and specific to the setups men and women have. There's not as well much I can complain about. I purchased a single when they had been released back in November for my family Space, and I was so impressed with the ease of use that I bought a different to replace my HTPC with XBMC in my theater room.I adore the truth that my entire household can use it with out freaking out like they used to with the HTPC.I'm streaming all my films and Television shows from a DNS 321 and a WD my book reside. No problems what so ever in recognizing my shares and folders. Recognized all my video files even though using my local artwork that I already had. Possessing utilized a WD live and Live hub, and an HTPC, I'm verry pleased employing the Boxee box.

IMDB integration for movies tittles and descriptions great !Capability to search and import subtitles. Simple to use and configure. So far has played Almost everything I have for my movie content.I purchased the Ause Eee Computer and a Microsoft (MS-1039) remote. I employed Windows 7 OS (Ubuntu and XP had unsatisfactory issues) and removed windows media center so it would stop popping up. Also set W7 to auto login and placed boxee shortcut in start off up on power up or wake.Came from attempting XBMC, WDTV, and Remote storage drives. I have 1TB portable USB drive to hold my media content and a separate raid desktop server for backups, and dlna access. The Boxee app IMO been the greatest app to use. I browse the apps and watch content from CNET (Apple Byte, Vehicles evaluations, engadget, podcasts and so on.) It also has the capability to stream some nightly sitcoms but I've noticed the ones obtainable are not ~a week old and not newly released.I extremely advise this app its wonderful for a users media Waiting for them to release the remote as a independent sale item as its presently only bundled with the Box. A single alternate would be the Logitech DiMo mini keyboard and mouse but its a bit pricy for my desires. It's windows so it occasionally hangs needs manual intervention. I have a laptop mouse and use it for manual reboots. I honestly assume this is the direction media content will be going to I want to drop cable and spend monthly subscriptions to the producers of which I watch media from, MLB, NFL, ABC, NBC, Discovery, etc. Why pay for content you dont watch. I consider apps like these and co's like Netflix are the end to major cable companies... like the Tolco's, time will tell.

Comment:
As someone who has relied on streaming local content to their Television for years starting with xbox1 xbmc, tversity over xbox 360 and directly connecting my pc to my HDTV I have to say that the Boxee Box has exceeded my expectations in regards of performance and compatibility... Setting it up was a breeze... it let me easily create  a boxee account, received the latest system update  and adding local media sources was a snap... it has alot of little options that just make sense. Its easy to tell this came from XBMC... I was a little worried that the web content would be mostly from the U.S. but it pulled down feeds from CTV, Global, Showcase etc.. and they all work ok.. but the main reason for me to purchase the device was to stream my content upstairs to my living room TV and to get access to Netflix... both work great... my Linksys E1000 router is downstairs and HD content up to 1080P streams upstairs with ZERO glitching.... im a very happy camper.... If you're worried about this device not being powerful enough to stream your content you should be safe... and if you dont want to have to mess with the more complex solutions but still want quality and reliability I strongly suggest picking this bad boy up.... Hey.. its a freaky cube that lights up green with a nifty remote that gives you access to a tremendous amount of free content that you can show off to your mates... what more do you want? :)

Cons:* processer could be strong* audio lag with TS files - but there is a setting to offset this* wifi is only 2.4ghz

Pros:* Plays every format* Firmware updates automatically* slick interface* remote control
Comment:
I got this as a part of my HD recording setup. I keep videos stored on my NAS (DNS-325), from which boxee reads and plays on the tv over wifi with no problem whatsoever. It discovers and reads network shares easily.I had some trouble setting up the wifi, mostly because i didn't realize it only works on the 2.4ghz band, so just keep that in mind if you have a dual band router.Updating is a snap - like the xbox, it just downloads and installs automatically - no need for complicating firmware flashing.Great product!

This box is awesome.Plays about anything you throw at it.I have not discovered a format it did not play but.So effortless to set up, a monkey could do it.Finds your networked drives with ease.Even streams Playon Media server or Twonky.DLNA, upnp.Much more apps than you can shake a stick at.Low power consumption and Low noise.Open Supply OS based on XBMC.. The browser nevertheless demands a small function.Does not have netflix or hulu however but I can stream them each to the box from Playon's media server software program on my Pc. I got a wireless keyboard with laser trackball for it also.Did i mention a monkey can set this thing up....I took 1 egg mainly because the browser demands operate and no Netflix or hulu native but, but most believe this will be acquired prior to year finish. If you use it wireless, make certain you have two.4ghz enabled on your router.

Coming from a WD HD Tv Live this factor runs cirles around it. I have been running it nonstop due to the fact I purchased it and have not had any of the lock up difficulties some other reviewers mentioned. I primarily use it play movies from my neighborhood wired network and it never ever misses a beat. It plays each file type that I have thrown at it so far... I was so used to receiving the dreaded invalid file type that I always got with my WD... those days are gone. The apps feature is pretty cool too. Lots of options... items that I did not have on my WD. The device is super effortless to setup and it right away finds all my network drives/shares -- once more considerably quicker than my WD. I like the remote and the keyboard. I don't have any troubles making use of it.. makes putting in passwords uncomplicated. I assume the mouse part operates fine... just takes some finding use to. The remote requirements to be backlit. Also, I wish they would not have made one particular side the glossy piano black surface. Just looks greasy with fingerprints following employing it. They really should have made it matte like the keyboard side. I have noticed that not all of the apps perform but the majority of the ones I have been interested in have. I really don't care for the goofy shape of the device. I would have preferred one thing a small sleeker or at least square or rectangle shaped. This thing just operates. The truth that it plays what I want it to with no griping about it is large. Netflix and Vudu are coming soon to this device so even a lot more issues to do with it. Some say its not ready for prime time. I disagree... prime time... smime time... somebody call the waaaambulance!

I utilised to have a Mac Mini connected to my primary Television and at one time or yet another ran XBMC, Boxee, and Plex on it. The reality is that because this box supports flash I can now use the Mac Mini for one thing more valuable taking into consideration its price.BTW - I connected a keyboard and mouse to it and surf employing the Boxee Browser that supports flash. Only supports 2.4GHz 802.11n - I have a dual-band router so its not an problem except that 2.4 is a crowded spectrum. The new update includes Netflix and Vudu. Get this factor and have no regrets.

Cons:-low hum of the cooling fan can be heard when the TV is silent-the cooling fan is a little underpowered if you are using the boxee 24/7-no local storage option-HDMI video interface only-cost

Pros:-easy setup-easy networking-built-in wifi capability-great support (boxee team will only support the boxee box now)-great design and small footprint-best remote for a media player-excellent GUI-automatically downloads movie covers-excellent media format compatibility-can browse the web and download apps (like netfix)-....too many to list
Comment:
The boxee box is the best media player on the market right now. It has the best design, hardware specs, remote, and GUI! Networking to your external content or the web is very easy with this unit, but the unit can still be difficult for those who don't read instructions or have much tech experience. The boxee box is all around great, very stable, and it will even automatically download movie thumbnails and content information for you! The remote alone puts it ahead of the competition. The only real problem it has is an audio-skipping issue on high-bitrate movies, but this is due to the intel-processor, and not the boxee software...and they are currently working on a fix for it. The problem is very rare, but can be fixed by a reset of the machine (sometimes a hard reset is necessary), or by letting the boxee cool down if it has been in use for an extended period of time (like 8+ hours). Don't let that scare you though, this is an excellent choice for a media player. I read all of the negative product reviews, but after having owned this unit for 2 months, it's clear those reviewers don't know what they were talking about, and that they judged this media player unfairly after a day or two of use.

Cons:Has had problems playing some media files. I'm stuck with Canadian content (Netflix and other sites) unless I use a VPN (not Boxee's fault I guess). Won't allow PC to sleep if connected?

Pros:Handles any media file I throw at it. Remote is perfect for living room. Small form factor. Ability to use as a NAS. Good wireless streaming.

I bought this during the holiday sale with free ground shipping. I was looking at first for a device to stream my media from my PC to my TV, but after reading reviews I decided on this for the added benefit (Boxee software and Netflix/other streaming apps). Hooking it up was painless enough, it comes with a supplied HDMI cable which is great. However the unit I got had old firmware which refused to connect to my home Wi-Fi. Luckily I was able to plug in ethernet to get the thing updated. Once the new firmware was installed it connect wirelessly and worked great. Picture quality is great and it streams any media file perfectly. It even streamed wirelessly my 11 GB Avatar Blue Ray rip perfectly which I was quite impressed with (wireless N).Now I've moved hooked my media hard drive directly up to the Boxee and have Windows Sharing enabled so it effectively turns it into a NAS. I can read/write to it from my PC using SMB. The iPhone app works great as well allowing full control of the Boxee Box from your phone. I also tried out Airplay, allowing the Box to stream music from my phone directly to it. My only gripes with it now are the lack of content because I'm in Canada, though I'm thinking a VPN might solve this issue. The other problem I'm having is my PC no longer sleeps, but this could be an unrelated issue. By far worth this is worth the price and since I'm saving $60 a month from cancelling cable, it's totally worth it.

Cons:- Price ($200 right now)- Boxee doesn't update  THAT often- Unique hardware design*- Remote control with keyboard on back*- Boxee interface offers little customization

Pros:- Unique hardware design*- Remote control with keyboard on back*- 1080p output- Wireless N built in- Excellent XBMC interface (Boxee branded)- Social media connectivity- Memory card reader built in- Good software stability- Netflix pre-installed- 100's of applications available- Fast software (little/no load times)- Easy to use
Comment:
I received the Boxee Box for my birthday this year and have loved it ever since. I specifically asked for the Boxee because I didn't want to settle for the plain text list style interface. I knew that Boxee had a customized X-Box Media Centre (XBMC) interface and that was exactly what I wanted. The Boxee software is probably the biggest reason to purchase the device. It gives you a Home Theatre PC (HTPC) experience without the need to put a PC together. You simpily put all your own content in a folder on one of your computers and share the folder with the Boxee Box and it will scan and recognize the content. The recognized content is then compared against the Internet Movie Database (IMDB.com) site and descriptions, trailers, and cover art is automatically applied. This feature, along with the rest of the impressive GUI is a solid plus for the Boxee Box over other $100 devices. Obviously the big negative for the Boxee Box is the price. At around $200 (as of the review date) it is double what you will pay for other media boxes right now. However, with the fancy software, built in wireless N, awesome remote control and a memory card reader, it is a reasonable investment. That being said, some people could scrounge the parts together to build a custom XBMC or Windows Media based PC that could offer them more customization. However I have a hard time believing they would get all of the hardware options that you get with the Boxee Box. However I have been wrong before. Overall it's a great device that, despite the higher price tag, can handle all my media needs and look fantastic doing it. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for something that's easy to use, offers a beautiful interface that will really show off your movie/tv collection.

Cons:can't create  long queues of music albums, doesn't allow zoom control of photos, RF control not supported by older universal remotes

Pros:supports most every audio and video format, excellent UI, able to use (and share) a USB hard drive
Comment:
Don't be put off by a few lackluster early reviews. As of late 2011, the Boxee Box is the best network media client out there. That's not to say it couldn't be better. Photo display lacks options, and there's no way to create  long queues of audio files for parties. But on video, no one else touches the Boxee. Its open-source ancestry ensures total support of all the formats (MKV, ISO, FLAC...). HD decoding is excellent, and the UI is slicker than on any other media player. My favorite feature? The ability to create  menu shortcuts to content folders on the LAN, so my wife doesn't need to deal with complex paths. And of course, the Boxee reads Samba shares, so no need for idiotic DLNA re-indexing of content. The Boxee Box also makes it convenient and fun to surf a weird and wonderful selection of Internet services, ranging from the commercial (Netflix) to the intellectual (TED) and the downright esoteric (CrunchyRoll). The remote does take a bit of getting used to, but I've grown to love it. The RF transmission makes it far more positive than traditional IR remotes. You won't be able to program most older universal remotes to deal with the Boxee, but that's the only real downside. If you want to access content from LAN storage, or from an online source such as Netflix, or from a USB hard drive, this is currently the best way to go.

The Boxee Box does play almost anything you throw at it. The media scrapers are outstanding. As a devoted user of XBMC I was blown away at the accuracy of it at rooting out the correct movie/tv name and grabbing the appropriate particulars. The Keyboard on the back of the remote is a really good touch. No built in IR receiver, generating it a pain to integrate with other equipment.Though Boxee toutes their partnership with Netflix, the expected Netflix support is nonetheless missing. When the scraper does get confused it can be tough or impossible to locate the files. Rather of a true file browser, your left with a list of files Boxee was not able to locate info for. I discovered this list was generally incomplete, leaving me with no file access. The UI/Color scheme is drab and cheap looking. Coming from XBMC, I miss the themes. The remote is absolutely symetrical, generating it effortless to accidently hold the remote flipped and finding confused why the buttons (too few buttons IMHO) are not working effectively. I got this box to replace XBMC on an aging XBox with a UI uncomplicated sufficient the youngsters could use it. It largely succeeds, but missing Netflix and a correct file browser makes it too frustrating to replace my HTPC.

It is not freeware, but they do have a trial in case everyone is interested. (better than Wii and 360* Video good quality is fantastic, with not a single stutter all week playing video from my network share over ethernet connection.* Quite little and convenient, and it runs cool. * I find that I have to reboot the Boxee to find new network shares (If I shared some thing though the box is on, it doesn't choose it up, incredibly little gripe) I spent weeks researching most of the media players out there, and I produced the correct decision. TONs of free of charge online content, plus Netflix, plus getting able to play ANY thing I can throw at it from a neighborhood network share.also... Tons of apps.

Looks good. Almost everything!Where to even start...1. Make positive you do not have Windows Live installed on your Windows machine or you will by no means get to stream any of your own nearby files to this box.two. Dont use wireless to connect to your network due to the fact, after the most current upgrade, IT DOESNT Work ANYMORE!!ō. I hope you have a fantastic ammount of patience mainly because it takes quite some time for the Boxee software program to scan your drives for files.4. The remote is a total discomfort in the a*s to use. Never has some thing been so simply confusing. In order to press any number on the backside keyboard, you truly have to hold down the shift key and press the number... So that means you hold down the shift crucial with one hand and use the other to press 1 number at a time. Due to the fact when does employing a remote regress us to make us use TWO hands instead of 1?? You really should get utilized to it though following the painstakingly difficult process of receiving this box configured. Still absolutely nothing to look forward to. Never, have I ever, in my entire life, purchased a item from D-link that was, truly, broken. I swear, it feels like everyone who bought this box are just beta-testers. The misery that we have endured is not worth the 赨 price tag. Its not even worth Ũ.50... Entirely ridiculous. I dont know if its the men and women at Boxee or the people today at D-link, but the whoever is writing the software program for this requirements to get their heads out of their a*ses simply because its utter cr*p. I will be RMA-ing this Right away. I had such high hopes that this would turn out to be a fantastic item. Plays all widespread film formats without fail. The slideshow feature lets me cycle via all of my high res pictures on the massive screen Tv.It plays mp3's by means of an attached receiver even though it's kinda stupid to do so considering that you need to have the Tv to navigate to your selection. Of course you can turn the Television off when you've made your selection. The remote. It's not infrared so you don't have to point it at the box (that's a pretty hard habit to break although!)The interface is additional like Windows Media Center than prior D-Link goods - really simple to navigate.I have a wired household network and the Boxee was effortless to set up on it. I have not tried the wireless capabilities on the other hand, maintain in mind that the laws of physics say that wireless will By no means function as properly as wired. Signals will never travel by way of the air as nicely as they do along a wire. The remote. It's got a qwerty keyboard on the back of it and that makes looking a breeze BUT who created the decision to put gray lettering on the buttons? What had been they thinking? It's pretty much impossible to see unless you turn on the lights. I bought this to stream my media - *not* net media - I have hundreds of movies, and thousands of MP3s and a lot of thousands of pictures on my home network. Doesn't have netflix or hulu? I don't genuinely care so I wouldn't ding it for that. For what I want - a local media player, the Boxee Box is perfect.

Yes there are allot of format issues but the key thing is that D-link is listening to their clients and are making the changes, they are at least doing something which is more then what I can say about some of the major manufacturers out there (SONY for one).
