Stay away from this drive. A firmware issue causes them to freeze up for random periods of time, making them useless to serve media or anything similar. It took Seagate customer support over a month to get back to me, with a response to update firmware with a program that wouldn't even work on a Mac.

I bought four of these drives and have been very pleased with the performance on all of them. They are far better than any other drives that I have owned over the past 20+ years and yes I go back when a 20meg HD was a huge drive and 1GB would cost $1000.00. I do suggest that you download the firmware from SeaGate first and run that instead of running the firmware that you get with the drive. Be sure that you remove the jumper from the pins of the drive before you even install the drive, this changes the drive from 150/GB's per sec to 300/GB's per sec. The drive comes factory set at 150/GBs per sec. and the jumper should be removed, which will leave the drive with no jumper at all. If you do these two things, you will be very pleased with this drive and the 32mb cache is almost as awesome as TigerDirect.

The first thing I did when I got the drive was to go to seagate and download new firmware for it. The issues are not mechanical, but have to do with the firmware displaying the wrong cache size to the computer. The drive has worked flawlessly for me so far.

I bought 6 of these in December and set 4 up in raid5 on N4100pro for media use. After 200+ hours of use and being 65% full they still work perfect. No noise, excessive heat (they are at constant 42-44C vs 49-52C on 1.5T ones), sound or SMART issues. I can't say I have nothing to complain about for now. I sure miss they days you would buy a drive and not worry about it failing. All I can suggest to buyer is don't put your eggs in one basket. Backup and/or buy 2 (prices are low enough that's for sure) to be safe.

Bought 2 recently at this same price, with one installed on a new pc built from parts bought from tigerdirect.ca. this namely the 1st hd, it from time to time produces some uncomfortable 'clicking' sound, and the 2nd hd, was not formatable, either as drive 2 or even as drive 1 with the 1st hd removed for formatting purpose. when formatting reached 3%, it stayed there for hours in the several attempts! I'll be going back to tigerdirect.ca tomorrow to see what they can do with the problems. my hd model is st31000340as, i guess they are primarily the same stuff, in particular, if they are all ''made in china''. I have once used a round-cornered, natural aluminium colour made in tianjin, china hd, had accessing problem followed by formatting problem, then turned dead soon after!
